Okay so I happened to score 100 bucks today, I know this is not enough to pay for my bike to be professionally painted but I was curious if it was enough to pay for my own paint, I know somebody who already has a spray gun and a guy who can help me but my question is, How much would it cost if I did it myself? and are there any specific tips for painting my own bike? Any help at all is very much appreciated.
I actually striped my bike and repainted it myself, i LOVE the look of my new paint-job [beer] but let me be the first to tell you that its not an easy task...its time consuming and if you don't have the patience then don't even think about it! it took me hours upon hours of sanding, spraying, drying, wet-sanding, coating, wet-sanding, etc....etc...If you have crashed your bike...of scratched it up real bad in a drop to the point where it doesn't look good...then go for it...you cant hurt it...but buyer beware that it will cost you in the ballpark of 300-400$ between paint, sandpaper, and clear coat....not to mention the time you put into it....i went with a metallic black with red stripes and it looks sexy for sure...but you have to be careful.....if one part doesn't dry right....or you get contaminates in the paint while its flashing...or you smudge a spot....or you didn't get a smooth coverage...all of these things can lead to a unsatisfactory paint job [thumbsdown] ....I had no prior experience before stripping and painting my bike...but i watched 40+ hours of you-tube and how to videos to see how to do it and to learn from their mistakes before i made them myself....
SOOO IMO if your paint job is fine...but you just want a different look...spend the money on some bike mods and leave the paint alone....but if the paint is messed up and your looking to change it for those reasons and you want some serious guidance then let me know and ill give you step by step instructions and point you in the right direction...... [thumbsup]
HeMan has a pretty good tutorial on how he did his tank.
