Title: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 23, 2011, 05:08:41 PM Since I kind of started the thread last year I thought I'd do it again, and being local, im hoping to get a lot more amazing pictures from my first hand account throughout the event!
The race is less than a month away, and the team is already out testing their new Pikes Peak Edition Multistradas!!!!!(http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20110423/prod_21897104-edba-41e5-9529-bec4168b29e8/tb_640x480.jpg) (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20110326/prod_dbcd8066-8061-46f2-88ad-0fbf3ff46dcb/tb_640x480.jpg) (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20110523/prod_2d9a82f4-a2a6-4833-9463-48bc84558e93/tb_640x480.jpg) (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20110523/prod_c4894cc7-cf36-4d65-a5cd-b4c4840eeb51/tb_640x480.jpg) (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20110523/prod_cc4cc3cc-093c-4120-a399-5117fd88f318/tb_640x480.jpg) http://ducati.kontain.com/spider-grips-ducati/entries/58377/alexander-smith-riding-his-special-edition-pikes-peak-ducati/ (http://ducati.kontain.com/spider-grips-ducati/entries/58377/alexander-smith-riding-his-special-edition-pikes-peak-ducati/) Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: OT on May 23, 2011, 07:52:55 PM Pics are good...
BTW - if it takes place entirely in Colorado, why is it called the "International" Hill Climb? Is that anything like a "National" golf course, such as Augusta, Trump, etc.? Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: pennyrobber on May 23, 2011, 08:11:37 PM Pics are good... BTW - if it takes place entirely in Colorado, why is it called the "International" Hill Climb? Is that anything like a "National" golf course, such as Augusta, Trump, etc.? Well, the road used to stretch into Canada but the bridge was damaged a few years ago. Damn hurricanes. BTW - if it takes place entirely in Colorado, why is it called the "International" Hill Climb? Is that anything like a "National" golf course, such as Augusta, Trump, etc.? I'm guessing it's because people come from all over the world to compete in the race. I've competed in several "International" events that took place entirely in a gymnasium/arena. I've competed in several "International" events that took place entirely in a gymnasium/arena. [thumbsup] [bacon] Why am I getting an image of some sort of volume-of-food-consumed-in-the-shortest-time competition... ? ;D Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 24, 2011, 12:09:04 PM Hey guys, can we keep to topic please?
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: OT on May 24, 2011, 07:43:43 PM Gotta do something while waiting for all those promised pics to show up ;D
So, what do you think, how many of those records are in jeopardy? Will all the snow this past winter (flew over the Rockies last week and they still look like the North Pole) be a problem for the course, come race time? Heard that the Multi is "the bike" for this race.....how does it match up against the competition (what is the competition, BMW, KTM?)? Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 25, 2011, 07:06:45 AM Well i live right below the mountain, see it everyday, and there hasn't been a lot of snow here in town or on the peak this year. Really, the snow that is on it now is form the past three weeks. There is still a ton of snow in the Mountains, the resorts are all still open, but we arent in the middle of the state, we are on the front range. There is what looks to be a good amount now, but we will see, last year on the turns, you could see 10' to 15' banks of snow that had drifted over the road, but plowed into walls in the spring.
as far as records, maybe, there is still dirt, but we took friends to the top a few times last summer, and they were paving away. Should be all paved next summer, then, we will see records break, as we see more street bikes racing to the top. Almost guarantee it. as far as the 1200 class, there are some KTMs in there, but last year, it was a joke really, not a lot of competition for them this year though, looks like the Ducati team isn't the only person on the new multi http://director.usacracing.com/ppihc/files/pdfs/competitor_list.pdf (http://director.usacracing.com/ppihc/files/pdfs/competitor_list.pdf) i was considering racing on the 696 as it falls well into the 750 twin class, not to win, but just to do it, but i dont have enough track time, and they require a "race resume". Hoping to get that going this year and to race next. Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: zooom on May 25, 2011, 08:34:04 AM i was considering racing on the 696 as it falls well into the 750 twin class, not to win, but just to do it, but i dont have enough track time, and they require a "race resume". Hoping to get that going this year and to race next. I think you can get a special liscence IF you have your AMA racing liscence.... Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: MadDuck on May 25, 2011, 08:40:10 AM Do you have a liscence for your minkey? ;D
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: OT on May 25, 2011, 09:30:05 AM That's not my minkey....
If the road's paved all the way up, won't bikes/cars be sliding over the edge if it's raining during the races? :o Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: atomic410 on May 25, 2011, 10:02:03 AM rain tires ftw. i want to do this race bad. If I did it I'd do it on a 450 or bigger motard. an AMA race licence isn't hard to get if you've been club racing for any time as an expert [bacon]
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 25, 2011, 10:07:14 AM You wont slide off the edge, the corners have rail guards, so you most likely slide, then fly. now the straits, no guards there, thousand foot drops.. its awesome
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: fastwin on May 28, 2011, 07:40:59 AM You wont slide off the edge, the corners have rail guards, so you most likely slide, then fly. now the straits, no guards there, thousand foot drops.. its awesome Seriously, guard rails in the turns? I remember the vids from last year's thread but I don't remember guard rails in all the turns? But then again, I've slept since then and have had a few drinks. [drink] [laugh] Hell, you live there I'd guess you'd know. [thumbsup] And if nothing has changed since last year the road is not paved all the way up. I do remember the dirt sections. [Dolph] Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 28, 2011, 09:06:52 AM last summer was a 60 40 paved dirt ratio, they say this year its more like 80 20
yeah up at about 11000 ft and beyond the corners have guard rails, none on the straights though. iPhone 4 Film (FIRST Corporate Film) - "156 Turns" - Ducati Multistrada - Pikes Peak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5JQdgvzuL0#normal) Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: fastwin on May 28, 2011, 01:24:57 PM last summer was a 60 40 paved dirt ratio, they say this year its more like 80 20 yeah up at about 11000 ft and beyond the corners have guard rails, none on the straights though. iPhone 4 Film (FIRST Corporate Film) - "156 Turns" - Ducati Multistrada - Pikes Peak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5JQdgvzuL0#normal) [thumbsup] I think they should leave a couple of dirt sections to honor the past when it was all dirt. That race is truly an American classic. Hope it runs forever! [popcorn] [bacon] Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on May 28, 2011, 04:51:23 PM [thumbsup] I think they should leave a couple of dirt sections to honor the past when it was all dirt. That race is truly an American classic. Hope it runs forever! [popcorn] [bacon] yeah but its not just a race road. Its open all year to tourists, and they want to make it more accesible to motorcycles i bet, plus the upkeep on a dirt road that high in the sky, craaazy runnoff. you should see some of the water runoff features along that road. Oh another idea too, may be to be able to plow and open sooner in the year. Its not usually open to the top until right about now, sometimes june. Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: OT on May 28, 2011, 08:48:45 PM They can dump dirt on the paved road and use that ;D
Carbureated HDs at 11,000 ft...that should be interesting It would be cool if someone (or two) flew off the edge...real gladiators Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on June 04, 2011, 11:40:08 AM They back on the mountain this weekend! Those are some serious winter coats they're wearing. Kind of cruel to be posting those pics when it's 100 degrees here in Texas! [bang] [laugh] And it will still be 100+ degrees for the next four months. :P
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on June 04, 2011, 03:31:20 PM well even in town, at 6 am its in the 40s, and they were out there at sunrise sop yeah at 10000 feet it was probably in the 30s.
It has been in the 80s today this afternoon, so up there at 3 pm, maybe 40s or 50's, plus its been windy... Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: fastwin on June 04, 2011, 03:47:19 PM Yeah, read the article after my post. He said it was 22 degrees where they based and some rider mentioned ice on the road at the top. Ahhhh... sounds like a dream come true as I sit in my house with the AC hummin' and heat waves coming off my driveway. ;D Come on October!!! [thumbsup]
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: OT on June 05, 2011, 06:41:52 AM Ummm...trailers?
Why don't they ride their "Multi Stradas" to the mountain? Too much specialization these days :P Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on June 05, 2011, 09:51:06 AM Ummm...trailers? Why don't they ride their "Multi Stradas" to the mountain? Too much specialization these days :P really? um, cause their race bikes. And they are sponsored by Ducati, They can ride in a warm car, and save gas for the training. Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: BastrdHK on June 05, 2011, 11:08:04 PM Cycle World Editor, Mark Cernicky, will be racing one of the Multis this year....should be an interesting read!
Title: Re: 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Post by: DucatiTorrey on June 06, 2011, 03:29:06 AM i noticed there was three bikes, but it looks like it has the same numbers on it. Is he racing for spidergrips?

And again, I was able to go to the fan fest the friday before to meet Greg Tracy, Alexander Smith as well as Mark Cernicky who writes for Cycle World and is racing another Multi with the Ducati Team (photo of him with Ducati Girls to follow)
I had a chance to speak with THE Greg Tracy. What a great guy. He has had a couple of falls this week while practicing, but he says his bike is running great and is very excited for the race. Mark Cernicky is a cool guy too. We spoke briefly about his trip from Cali (you may have seen Ducati posting things on Facebook and the Community like, All Roads Lead To Pikes Peak) that was him riding there. Also!!!! Got to meet Arrick (the crazy 1100 guy). What a stand up dude, very chill, has the best job in the world, and monster as well. We spoke about his week here, watching them practice and being up on the mountain at 3 am every morning. We couldn't talk long though, he was busy photographing ducati girls... yep, best job in the world Anyways, should be an amazing race this weekend, sorry i didn't get better photos. Pictures of me with the Ducati Girls to follow hopefully soon. lots of close free parking for Ducatis!
