I'm curious.  Have you seen the bikes from prior Monster Challenges?  

You've got a nice bike.  I'd take it.  Actually, I have a black 1100.  But..you've got a very long way to go before you even take home an honorable mention ribbon.  I'm not being mean xsk.  Just being up front.

Well to the OP credit, he has swapped the swingarm out - so it's a bit more than just bolt ons... though there's a lot of other bikes that are just bolt ups.

An it's only open to new monsters... which is crap.

They don't need to market the old ones anymore ;)

I like it as far as the newer bikes go...  And since that's all that's allowed to enter this one.

I'll check out the link & vote my conscience.

Folks are allowed to enter until mid July - so I'd hope there will be a bigger pool.

It's one of the cleanest of the new Monsters, but I will also hold off until I see all of them.

I remember people complaining about the original challenge being a popularity contest. Since this one is more of general puplic opinion, I hope to see less crying.

Anyone put a dry clutch in a late model monster yet?    ;)

You have to admit that xskiervh's 696 with the sss now looks pretty strong. Someone should explain to some that just replacing the skinz is not enough to win and I just can't convince myself to vote for anyone that puts an extended swing arm with a huge rear tire on a Monster.

Or apparently properly tension a chain.

To give people an idea of what goes into making a Monster Challenge winner I pulled this from flightcycles.com. Let's just say that it is a bit more than slip-ons and clip-ons:



ELECTRICS

    * Converted to fuel injection via wrecked 1999 SS750
    * Ducati Performance SS900 ECU
    * Custom build bracket under tank to fit all electronic relays, battery, coils, ecu, horn, sensors, fuse blocks and associated wiring (built to fit all under tank, out of line of sight)
    * Gel-cell battery fitted for reduced weight
    * Modified entire wiring harness to accommodate new locations of electronic components (removed three pounds in the process)
    * Superbike tachometer
    * Reproduction taillamp from 1954 Chevy p/u
    * Billet bar-end turn signals

ENGINE

    * 1999 SS750 Heads ported w/oversize valves
    * Ceramic coating on the combustion chambers, faces of both valves, exhaust port, radius side of exhaust valve and piston face
    * 1995 SS750 belt covers
    * Timing gears installed from 1999 SS750 for efi conversion
    * 76 860 GTS Bevel-drive valve covers
    * Clutch slave cylinder from 2002 M900
    * 750 engine converted to a dry clutch
          o Primary gears installed from 1995 M900
          o Right side engine cover installed from 99 ST4
          o Custom machined spacers to adapt dry clutch components to wet clutch engine
          o Dry clutch basket fitted from 1995 M900
          o Clutch hub and pressure plate (both modified) from 99 SS750
          o Stock flywheel machined down for reduction in rotating mass
          o Nichols flywheel lock nuts
    * Open K&N air filters
    * Custom built 2-into-1 exhaust system with baffle
    * 2002 748S Throttle fitted w/high idle bump (to eliminate need for choke cable)
    * Machined aluminum sprocket cover
    * Ducati Kaemna exhaust flanges
    * Oil cooler eliminated (able to do so because of dry-clutch, and ceramic-coating)
    * Oil bypass valve removed
    * Clear crankcase vent hose to K&N breather

BODY/FRAME
Custom modified frame including the following:

    * All extra brackets removed
    * Upper cross bar fitted from SS bike to allow room for efi
    * Nut welded in place to accommodate stock Superbike steering damper
    * Rear frame cut and loop welded in for bump-seat
    * Powdercoated Satin Black
    * Fuel tank from 00 M900 for efi conversion
    * Custom built bump seat (fiberglass)
    * Road-Racing front fender modified and repainted
    * Drilled and tapped lower triple tree to accept steering stabilizer
    * Nichols engine mounting bolts
    * Style and Performance rear-sets
    * CRG hindsight mirrors
    * Grey paint stripped from top triple (to match lower)
    * Custom paint and custom D decal w/Italian flag integrated

BRAKES

    * Dual snowflake from rotos from a Superbike
    * Front brakes upgraded to dual disc with Brembo calipers (1998 748)
    * Front brake line from a 2000 996
    * Rear caliper upgraded to 1999 SS750 unit
    * Rear caliper bracket modified to eliminate swingarm mount
    * Rear brake caliper stabilizer rod installed from 1998 SS/FE
    * Clutch and Brake master cylinders fitted from 1999 SS750
    * Rear brake line from 1999 SS750

SUSPENSION

    * Modified swing arm from 2000 M600 (to eliminate stud for rear brake caliper bracket), powder coated to match frame
    * Rebuilt front forks from a 1995 SSCR, hard black anodized
    * Racetech Gold-Valves installed
    * Rebuilt stock rear shock with re-valving, spring powder coated to match frame

Plus many other custom touches to complete bike aesthetically and mechanically (read the above as: I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things here...)


It should be noted that Stu built this thing for himself and by himself before the idea of a "Monster Challenge" was ever conceived. Its just the bike he wanted. And now the crazy bastard is rebuilding it to make it perfect. The bikes I see in the latest Monster Challenge have a looooooong way to go in my opinion. And I just don't think that the new Monster will ever be a better platform for customizing a bike than the old Monster. IMO Ducati make the beast with two backsed up a classic.

Don't let the haters hate on you - your bike is entered in the "AMATEUR" class and in my opinion is very clean and simple - what a monster should be.

I'm going to post a picture of my bike and say that it was originally a 696. I would simply say that I replace the frame, engine and eveything else.

actually that would disqualify the bike. the main frame has to be stock per se.

And was also a suspect entry. IIRC that bike was entered by a female claiming it was her "build." Come to find out she is related in some way (daughter) to the owner of SB Ducati. So it was really a shop entry put up against amateur entry's.  

The original Challenge winner (duckstew) is legit. No questions, no issues, no red flags.

Some of the bikes picked to take a free trip that first year were not. The DML (not to be confused with the DMF) owner picked his friend (and an employee of the other owner of the DML) as a wildcard. Wildcard got a free trip to Daytona. Bike wasn't worthy. This caused a lot of brew haha.

The DMC will forever be cursed with bad feelings, cheating, and haters.

So xskiervh, nice bike. Good luck. Have fun with it.

Wow I didn't expect to get this much of a response. To be honest I'm in agreement with all of you, even the haters. What can you expect when you can't change the frame and engine, the rest is just a lot if clip on pieces. To a point my bike is that way, but like some have pointed out, I've swapped out the swing arm and put a hypermotard rim on there. A different exhaust altogether, not jut replacing mufflers which in my opinion give the bike a cleaner look. Painted calipers. I painted the take covers myself....didn't just buy a mass produced tank cover. oh and I chopped off the antlers to bring the POD lower and streamlined.

Half the reason I started this was cause I think it has turned into a popularity contest as well. Hopefully some better looking bikes show up and the voting will show better results.

I like the sharpie motif. Very unique and creative. Cool bike for sure. But I see next to nothing modified on that bike. Can't see it going very far in the Monster Challenge.

I know all the parties involved and this statement is, frankly, bullshit.

As one the the wildcards picked for the 2nd Monster Challenge I have nothing but good feelings about the whole contest. As for the bit  about the trailer queenbike (which was the 3rd place bike, not the winner) and the fact that the guy who did win was an employee of Motowheels for a while not being a true amateur builds and/or bikes that don't actually see the road much... Whatever  [roll]

Except I'll say the 2nd place guy's bike was the real deal, no questions asked and leave it at that. And I'm a bit bummed Chris Platzer's bike (the reptilian one) didn't win anything. The bike was built on a shoestring budget with hand tools and it looked awesome.

Haters are gonna hate. As I said to Gary Eagan (the organizer) "You could get everyone who entered laid and they'd still find something to pregnant dog about."

And as a final note: As long as the frame started life as a Monster frame (and still has the VIN and is street 'legal') it's eligible.

You can call BS all you want. I watched the play by play like everyone else.

The fact that your bike won cleanly, even amidst the cloud of drama, was/is a testament to the fact that you built the best damn bike that year. Period.  No questions. No dispute. Something to be proud of.

was that the yellow one? The one that Grio bought? Because if it is I'll say this, I didn't much care for the looks of the thing but when I rode it went like a bat out of hell and the carbon wheels made it feel like you were hovering above the road in the corners. It almost had me believing that I know how to ride a motorcycle. That was a really terrific bike.

To the op, your bike looks great. Props on the swinger conversion! Constructive criticism; I'd bet that the mismatched rims / lack of a fork swap may hold you back some. That said, your bike is way nicer then my 696 and I'd love to have it!

I knew the drama was going to show up again. I still think that the OP's bike is still in the lead simply because it's my type of bike. Unless I see something spectacular in the next few weeks, he is getting my vote.

lol, yeah i kinda ran outta money when it came to doin the front end. And i figured the disk rotor covers up most of the front rim that not many people would notice its a different rim. My buddy bugs me about it all the time though haha. the fork swap will come eventually, not sure i can justify it before the contest ends.

The first gen bikes were so... well, bland. You had a lot of ways to change them for the better. The next gen bike already have a look so it's harder to alter it.

Just about everything you could mod on the old Monsters, you can probably do with the new one. People just haven't done it yet. People have been modding the original since 92. Give it a few years and we'll be seeing a lot of trick things.

Again, I will restate that your comment is not in any way factual. The owner of the DML had nothing to do with the contest, he never had any employees and I could go on from there but why bother?

Factually: You got who won the last challenge wrong. Right there is a big warning bell that you have no idea what you're talking about but you go on to confuse the DML mailing list with the website and from there you go on to insinuate that somehow the contest was rigged.

By someone I consider a real stand-up guy and a far bigger asset to the Monster community than you are.

well, i'll be placing my vote this week on the MonsterChallenge, unfortunately not for myself :( Just got informed there won't be exceptions for US military/veterans overseas. Probably cause they know I would be one of the four coming to Indy ;) and didn't plan for the costs of shipping.
