Title: Which Exhaust - Help me Decide!
Post by: Javamoose on May 24, 2011, 10:48:15 PM
Ok, so, I need/want to replace the stock cans on my M750.  Don't have a ton of cash, but have a small part of the budget set aside for something a little better looking than stock cans.

So, I've narrowed it down to two Dan Moto exhausts (as an aside, if anyone has experience with these two, let me know - post below!!) that I like, but not sure which would look best.  I'll wait to say what one I favor.

Dan Moto Conical: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GP-Exhaust-Ducati-Monster-600-620-750-800-900-EX222-/220713461300?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item33638c2634 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GP-Exhaust-Ducati-Monster-600-620-750-800-900-EX222-/220713461300?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item33638c2634)

Dan Moto GP Extreme: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GP-Exhaust-Ducati-Monster-600-620-750-800-900-EX167-/180667855240?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a10a4b188 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GP-Exhaust-Ducati-Monster-600-620-750-800-900-EX167-/180667855240?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a10a4b188)

Here is a pic of my M750 as she sits.

EDIT:  Just so there is no confusion, I am NOT a Dan Moto shill, those were just the ones I found that were in my Sub-$400 price range...

I think I'd need to see them mount to be sure, but I think the conical version would get my vote of those two.

From those 2...Conical.

I don't think Dan-Moto has any pictures on how these 2 pipes bolt on to the bike.  We don't really have any reference on size, lenghth, and how it would flow with the rest of the bike.  But from just the pictures avaiable, I would go with Conical.

Well, according to their eBay listing - the conical exhaust is 12.75" L x 3.5" Diameter (at widest point).  Pretty small cans, actually.

The GP Extreme exhaust is 17.71" L x 3.5" Diameter.

Of course, the length of the connecting pipe isn't given.

Here is a Youtube video of the conical mounted to a Honda Hornet (best I could find):

Well I guess its just me but I'd go with the GP. I dont like how the Conical looks. Although its hard to say without seeing them on a bike...  ???

Not quite sure what mean there, sorry.  [bang] But it might be that its just bc I like more the way the pipes itself looks like not considering how it would look on the bike.

some marving low-mounts would look sick with that paint job.

$499 for the system.

These pipes kinda look like the Conicals. So maybe you get a little picture of how they would look like on your monster... Hope this helps.

Well, it seems the majority prefer the same one I was leaning towards - the Conical.  So, between the price ($235 is way less than $499 - Marvings are nice, but I cannot afford them) and the other thread on here about the DM exhausts - it looks like I'll be ordering a set of the DM Conicals!

I'll take pics and video once I get them and have them mounted up.  Thanks!  [thumbsup]

Look like Zards.  I have a set of Carbon Can's --dual high-rise.  They sound AWESOME.  Deep like Termi's, but different.

To keep this thread current for future searches:

Just got them in today, holy crap are these things compact and light!!  HUGE difference over the massive stock cans.  Even with them being light, they feel VERY solid.

First impressions:  Decent packaging, no damage during shipping.  Quality looks good, nice welds with (what looks like) good penetration.  Stainless looks nice, some little imperfections on blended areas, but you really gotta be looking.  The seem where the rolled steel was joined could be a bit smoother - but that's on the underside of the cans.  Intermediate pipe looks nice.  Springs from can to intermediate pipe look good...we'll see how they hold up (they don't look like stainless, but they could be).

Few "bad" things that stick out right away:  Hanger, it is just meh, not terrible but could be improved.  It's stainless as well, all the holes in the strap are countersunk/chamfered and everything has a good edge-break on it, no burrs.  But still, hanger is kinda...cheap feeling - though I am not totally sure how I would improve it.

Second issue - holy 'eff it is hard, neigh on impossibly tight, to get the intermediate to slip into the muffler/can.  I think I am going to have to hit the edge of the pipe with some sandpaper to give it a chamfer so I can slip the cans on.  Could use a little fit & finish on that interface.

Personal opinion time:  I paid $208 shipped - even with the little nit picks and without knowing how they will hold up long-term - I am very happy with my purchase.  I've always thought there is no good reason why motorcycle exhausts need to cost so much more than automotive exhausts for hos simple and small they are.  These cans, to me, prove that.  Install pics will come this weekend, video of them with the bike running will be shortly after that once I finish some other maintenance.

For now, take a look (ignore my grubby fingerprints on the cans):

(Weld on the bottom of the can, trick of the light makes it look worse than it is.  It's a solid weld, just a little messy.)

Ended up not having enough time this weekend, but, as promised - here are pics of the cans on my M750.  The mounts aren't on yet, but this as least gives an idea of how they fit/look/sit on the bike.

I give them a big [thumbsup] - I LOVE the way they look, they are super light and just the right (IMHO) length...can't wait until I finish the rest of the work on my bike so I can hear these bad boys...
