Title: Big Valve Heads Post by: koko64 on May 26, 2011, 03:50:33 PM I really like my Monster. Thinking about refreshing/upgrading the motor.
Besides MBP, who else in North America does big valve head conversions for the older carbed Monsters? Any recommendations? j v, Travman? I'm considering the biggest valves that would fit which obviously would require reducing the valve angle. Say ported 45/40 or 45/39? I'm running stock manifolds with 41 FCRs, open air box, JE hi comps and stock cams advanced 7 deg. Would I have to run 944 bore pistons to fit these valves? It would be possible to buy a DS motor from the US, but shipping, split FCRs, pipes, dual coils, registration, import tax, etc may be prohibitive. You could buy a carbed Monster for the price of a DS motor down here. I could sell the old motor and carbs however, but changing motors (other than stock to the model) down here isn't getting any easier. If I can buy heads ready to bolt on, I can do the work and already have the pipes, carbs, manifolds, ignition, etc. It's still cheaper than a $20,000 new Monster down here. I do know some cams cannot run oversized valves - such as the VeeTwo 900 M/SS cams because of their higher lift grinds. The size of the valve, its tulip-shape and valve-seat multi-angle cuts affect flow more than increased lift from my reading, but all of the 'business end' changes are limited in increases in performance by proper porting (or lack there-of) of the head-internal flow-path, port-matching with the intake spigots, length and straightness of intake spigots, and carb diameter. So my suggestions of shops include: North America - USA: Boulder Motorsports, wherever the former BCM employees now work, DucPond, DucShop, Nichols MFG, Fox Performance Engines, and APE Engineering (that's a big ol' maybe). North America - Outside the USA: MBP Europe: Ducati Kaemna (Germany), maybe Sigma Performance (England) Australia: Brook Henry Ducati (BH of VeeTwo if my memory serves correctly) Perhaps contact these shops for quotes, options, and turn-around time; and if not the shop is interested or competent in the particular job requested, you might get their suggestions as to where to look. DS stockers 45 inlet 40 exhaust. I think Vee Two in Oz were doing 45 inlet 39 exhaust in older heads at one stage with reduced valve angle and raised ports, but that doesn't seem an option now. You can fit a 44 inlet in the stock head without "re-angling" valves. That would be a cheaper option with maybe ST2 cams and a big bore kit (JE 944 are affordable). Probably cheaper for me to buy 2nd hand bored barrels to fit 944 JE pistons and worked heads with big inlet valves from the States.
