Title: More power from a 696?
Post by: manu1151 on May 29, 2011, 05:21:33 AM
hi, does anyone know how to increase power output on a 696 engine? im referring to other stuff apart from exhaust, ECU and air fliter.

thanks

Big bore kit.

796

Termi kit
Powercommander V
Port and Polish
1100 cams (still unproven if they fit)
No one makes High compression pistons that i've seen.
also some are saying the pod filters are putting more power out as well.

besides those you can crack the cases and add a 796 crank and pistons... and there are 800 HC pistons available, but the heads are shape different than the old 800's so you'll have to check valve clearances on the piston dome.

hmmm... that's about all i can think of now.

Although it doesn't add power, it'll should add some quickness:

Rider looses weight.   [cheeky]
Bike looses weight.
Change the gearing to optimize riding style.
Reduce rotating mass (e.g. light weight wheels).

thanks for the answers, i already had thought about doing something with the 796 engine, but i think that may be too expensive, and if you take into account the SSS your probably better off with a 796

who makes the big bore kits? does anyone know anything about them?

Yup, I think you're onto something there  [thumbsup].

Probably the best way to make the most power(best performance) froma  696..

1. Lighten the hell out of it
2. Exhaust/Intake
3. Correct tune(ECU reflash w/power commander dyno tune)
4. Suspension upgrades all around

It will never be the fastest in a straight line, but head to head in the twisties it will definitely keep up with if not outrun more powerful bikes.

As far as a motorswap... for sure more displacement will help and the 2v monster motors should all fit. even the SSS motors of the 796/1100 will fit.

the bore i think can go up to 91 or 92 from the stock 88. but likely you'll have to have custom pistons made. then bore and replate the cyl. the 800HC pistons will have a lower deck height so would lower the compression or keep it the same at least. they are made for a 8.8mm longer stroke but they are the same bore. so they would be a good start for a custom piston.

you'll have to go through someone like www.ducshop.com (http://)

But if you want to keep it a 696 and make it the best damn 696...

I spoke to a very well known Ducati race engine builder and he told me the head on the 696 is a very good head. the valves are the largest that would flow well. just clean up the ports, do a 3 angle valve job, replace the valve guides with a better material. clean up the combustion chamber a bit.

lightening the internals of the motor will allow you to hit the powerband of the 696 faster, >6000k rpm. this is why the DP ECU or a remap of somesort that will bump the RPM limiter up so you won't have such a narrow powerband.

and lightening the wheels/brakes and improved suspension will really improve the feel of the bike in corners etc.

also, something as simple as a quick cam throttlebody cam will give you a better feel getting to the powerband.

thanks everyone, I now have an idea of what to start planning, i think ill go with the porting and general weight loss, I'll see and see what more i can. i actually plan on keeping my 696 forever so i dont really mind investing money in it...

Keep us updated, I would like to see what you come up with!

JE will make pistons in batches of four to your specs.  Really light weight wheels make a huge difference in everything - turning, stopping and going, but especially turning  ;D
