My 30,000k service is due and ordered some parts...........from the US and saved a packet. ;D

I ordered 1 pair of cam belts (OEM) for M1000DS.
              1 pair of cam belts (Bucci) for M750
               2 K&N Oil Filters
               And a Cycleworks T shirt for me  ;)

And landed the lot for less than it was going to cost for just the OEM M1000's belts locally. I wonder what the service dept would say if you brought all your own parts and just wanted them to do the job?? I'll bet they wouldnt be happy!! [roll] [thumbsup]

I think my Dealer gets a little pissed because I buy all my Carbon parts and billet bits through Monster parts and others, The big stuff like my Exhaust and the Service work he gets, But there is more easy profit per Item in the Toys and Bling. I think he'll get even more pissed when the Warranty is up and I take over doing the work myself.
Not to complain at all, because so far they have been excellent and pricing has been better than I expected

But such is life, you have to look after number 1  [thumbsup]

Yeah I think Chris does a great service to the duc community world wide, and he certainly has been very accommodating in helping out people from au in the past.

I think that BYO parts might be OK with some service people - but probably not shops and certainly not the dealers. But regardless, if you have a relationship with a shop, it would not hurt to ask.

Personally if I ran a service shop, as a rule I would not do it - too much potential for things to go wrong - what if the parts are incorrect, what if they are defective, what if, what if, what if...... already too many things to make it too much hassle.

Having said that I might make exceptions for people I know who will accept the good (cheaper parts) with the bad (the risk and responsibility usually taken by the shop making a profit on the sale of them). Those exceptions would be few and far between....

With the aussie dollar the way it is it makes sense to get stuff out of the states at the moment, even with postage have just saved $80 on a pair of boots.

I cant see the grounds for complaint from service people if the parts you supply are "Original Equipment" parts.  ???

For example, the belts for my M1000 locally are $240 minimum the pair. Whereas from Chris the exactly the same part is $117 AUS.

that's a massive difference....

what about last year when I was hunting for tail chops and the like - Ducati quoted $628 for a piece that landed at $220-ish )off the top of my head.

I agree with Goldfish - You should talk to your regular shop and see if they will fit the parts for you as part of the service (unless you really want to do everything yourself). In fact you can do a deal with them where you list all the service items needed to be done and you do what you can, eg, change out the fluids (Oil, Brake fluid etc...), adjust what you can and then leave the bits you can't do for the shop to do. eg: change out the belts and check valve clearances.

If your regular shop is not a Ducati dealer and you have a good relationship with them you should be able to do this. Given that your service is not a warranty issue then there should be no problem.

That way you save some bucks and you continue to use a good workshop to do the things you are not quite able to do yourself. Everybody wins - Your service will be affordable instead of absurd and you will have learned a bit more about your bike.

My local shop (not a dealer) even suggested this themselves when I baulked at the sevice quote.  As long as they are clear on what is their responsibility I don't think that they have too many problems with the idea.

Bob Brown works this way - I supplied oil and oil filter - he was most impressed with Amsoil stuff - and I would of imported my belts if I had time - it would have saved him gettting them. He promotes this kind of thing!
