Title: New Monster 659 delivered!
Post by: DinoM659 on June 04, 2011, 01:49:48 AM
Here it is, just got it yesterday. 2011 Monster 659.

The bike is here but I still can't find a spec sheet for it (either can the dealer). Can anyone find one?

Very cool, if your in Sydney hope to see you out on the road somewhere.
Maybe if we can get ourselves together for a group ride again shortly.

Have fun with it, loved my 620.

And since you're here, pop into the intro thread and fill in some vital stats.
We know you have a shiney new toy, tell us the rest.

Thanks to all for your posts! I'm already in the intro thread. I put a post up when I ordered the bike.

Found the stats on the bike.... RTFM...

Here is a comparison between the 659 and the 696 for those that are interested:

                                    Monster 659                  Monster 696
Power               38kW / 52HP @8,500 rpm   54.5 kW @ 9,000 rpm
Bore                       88 mm                                   88 mm
Stroke                                  54.2 mm           57.2 mm
Total Displacement cm3          656                   696
Compression Ratio             10.2 +/- 0.5:1           10.7 +/-0.5:1
Torque      7.5 kgm - 46.5 Nm @ 7,500 rpm   62kW @ 7,750 rpm???
(not sure on kW for a torque measure, but that's what the 696 manual says)
Max RPM                              9,500                    -
Dry Weight without battery      161kg            -
Dry Weight inc. battery           174kg           161kg
Power/Weight                           0.218           0.339
LAMS Calculation
Dry Weight inc. battery (kg)   174                    161
Rider (kg)                                80                   80
Total weight (kg)                     254                    241
Power                                     38                       54.5
Power (kW) per 1000kg          149.61            226.14
(Looks like Ducati flew close to the wind with this one... 149.61)

The bike has a governor on the throttle so it is quite restricted, but that's the point of the bike for a learner I guess. Had my first long ride today and had a ball on it. It's really easy to ride and it sounds awesome!

Hi Mattyvas,
I'm in Brisbane, so a little far to ride to Sydney unfortunately.

Congrats looks good  [thumbsup] and the right colour too
are you keeping it stock or like us leading echother down that endless tunnel of mods ?
IMO the best visual mod for the new Monsters( be it an expensive one) are rearsets
removing that whole alloy triangle with the rear pegs...........oops did I start it.

Oh and your garage is too tidy makes me feel like a grub as mine looks like something
out of that TV series Hoarders  [laugh]

IIRC rider weight is calculated at 90 Kg's for lams

Congrats on your new purchase!!!

What ever you do DO NOT START THINKING OF ANY MODS ! ! ! !

This will be a costly exercise, ask someone who knows !!   [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Only kidding, I wouldn't know what to do with a bike that hasn't been a little 'personalised'.

Enjoy.

IIRC rider weight is calculated at 90 Kg's for lams

This changes things a little, here are the new figures with 90kg for rider weight:

LAMS Calculation
Dry Weight inc. battery (kg)      174         161
Rider (kg)                                   90          90
Total weight (kg)                      264         251
Power                                      38              54.5
Power (kW) per 1000kg            143.94     217.13

Cheers Two Dogs,

I won't be modifying the bike (except for the frame sliders), especially the rearsets as any mod like that could lose the LAMS registration. Once you modify anything that improves performance the bike can never be put back to a LAMS rego again, even if the original gear is put back on (so I'm told).

rear sets dont improve performace as in measured HP that would affect power to weight and put it out of the LAMS

if you were to say take away the restriction then that is a mod that would remove LAMS

eg resticted hyosungs can be desrestricted by the dealer , they then notify the RTA and it can never be a LAMS bike again

Hi mate, are the tyre sizes the same as the 696 ie 120/60 front and 160/60 rear?

Yes ducm3, as you stated. Pirelli tyres:
120/60 -ZR17" front
160/60-ZR17" rear

Forgive my ignorance, I thought 'rear sets' were pipes (mufflers).... just googled them to find out they are the gear changers and foot pedals...  can someone explain why you would change the Ducati ones? Is there something wrong with them?

Changing the pipes would be a mod I couldn't do if I wanted to keep it LAMS.

No problem Rob S, that's why I'm here; to learn.

I'm focused on learning to ride the thing first, then I might venture into pulling it apart but it won't be any time soon. I really like the bike the way it is at the moment, but we'll see... give it time I guess...

Cheers

Thanks DinoM659, I have bought the same bike as you (mine is black though),  I'm told it should be ready on Friday  ;D

How does the ride feel so far? How's the sound?

Title: Re: New Monster 659 delivered!
Post by: DinoM659 on June 07, 2011, 05:23:03 AM
Hey Ducm3, wow a black one! I thought about getting it in black but the dealer only had one red one left on back order and I would've had to wait if I wanted black so that kind of made the decision for me. But I'm still very happy with the red!

The bike is so easy to ride. I thought I might be a bit intimidated jumping on a bigger bike straight up but it is no problem at all. I'm tall with a large frame so I needed something substantial to ride and I don't think I could have picked a better bike. Seems to have plenty of torque and I don't need to drop gears too often to ride up hilly streets around town. The light weight of the bike is a real bonus, it makes it so easy to handle.

Also I thought the low seat might be a problem but it seems OK to me.

The sound is something else! I love the sound of it, it just burbles along and sounds really throaty at times. I'm sure you're going to love it!

Post up some pics when you get it...

Cheers

Don't listen to anyone on this forum Dino.  Your bike is fine just the way it is.  Until you start hanging around  here and thinking otherwise of course.  This place is a bad influence on the wallet.   :o

Changing the pipes would be a mod I couldn't do if I wanted to keep it LAMS.

that is quite debateable

the main issue with LAMS of larger bikes such as yours is that they are restricted

if you remove the restriction throttle stop, ecu or however they restrict it then it would no longer be a lams bike

Picked up my M659 yesterday. All I can say is......what an amazing bike.  ;D

I've only ridden it the 10km or so home as I wanted to avoid the rain. But my initial thoughts, compared to my previous bike (Honda CB400) are (bearing in mind I'd never ridden a Ducati before):

1. The exhaust note -  [thumbsup]. I found myself switching the engine on in my garage a couple of times last night just to hear it again.
2. The torque - very different to the CB400. I can comfortably cruise at 60 km/h in 4th doing around 4K whereas to do the same in the CB400 the revs would be around 5.5K in the same gear. This is something I look forward to getting used to.
3. The riding position - seems lower and more forward. I'm only 175cm tall so I've found the position more suited to my frame. Hopefully I'll feel the same way after a long ride.
4.  When you take off from 1st, there's a little vibration and shake - I assume this is normal? It's not as smooth as the CB400 on take-offs but I assume this is a characteristic of the L-twin engine?
5. Did I mention the exhaust note?  [laugh]

I was lucky that they had a short tail kit in stock so I had this fitted. Pics to follow!

Great news.

New bike + rain = Boooooooooooooo :'(

In regards to vibration shake on take off. Give it time. Its a brand new clutch. Plus you are also getting use to it. So in time and with some wear it will be alot smoother for the both of you.

(wait til you put on some nice termis and remove the baffles. Now thats a note!!!)

Enjoy!

Check my earlier post. The CB400 was a great bike, it will definitely suit your requirements especially if you use it as a daily commuter. It's economical, has decent grunt, looks good and is easy to ride.

BUT

The M659 has soul and character. It's also easy to ride. I've only had mine for a few days so I really need more time to properly assess it. But my initial thoughts are that it's a much more exciting ride. And it's also a more expensive proposition. So you really need to think about what you are going to use it for. I don't use mine as a daily rider, it's more of a weekend toy.

And the 659 has an exhaust sound that you will never, ever get on the CB400.  [clap]

im looking for a weekend toy myself , so its at the top of the list.

must be frustrating to have just received the 659 and have it rain all weekend. let us all know how it went if you got out for a blat.  [thumbsup]

Cheers, thanks heatherp...

I'll be leaving it stock for a good while yet. I'm not sure this is the bike I want to make major mods to while I'm just starting out in the sport.

I can say that it's an excellent learner bike for those wanting one. I've clocked up over 600kms already and have found it so easy to ride. No complaints so far and it has more than enough power for me right now.

Yeah congratulations guys.

I have seen quite a few of the new-style Monsters out on the road ... probably to the point now that I am seeing more of the new-style than the old.

But ... I can only recall one ever being on a Sydney Ozmo ride. Are 'new-style' owners less sociable? Intimidated? Inferiority complex? Superiority complex?

Apologies for the threadjack ... just seemed the appropriate place to vent.

Hey Ducm3,

Are you saying the dealer is ordering the cowl for nothing? My dealer hasn't mentioned anything about this.

Title: Re: New Monster 659 delivered!
Post by: ducm3 on June 21, 2011, 03:21:59 AM
Hi Dino659,

There was no mention made about cost - the dealer just told me that the cowl had been ordered and would let me know when it arrives. He said it was a mistake by Duc Australia, so I assume it's supposed to be on the bike.

On another note - you should definitely order the short tail kit - makes a massive difference to how the bike looks!

Hi Dino and Duc m3,
Ive had my 659 for a month now.
Man what an awesome Sexy bike.
Ive already spent way to much on mods.
I was told dy my dealer, John@ Ducati Noosa, this is my nearest dealer as there is no Ducati dealer in North Queensland, that the Rear seat Cowl and Front screen are still on order and will be supplied when they arive.
Id confirm this with your dealers.

I couldnt wait for mine so i purchased a seat cowl from the US for $75, plus $25 post.
I have put some Carbon bits on it and also a tidy tail.
Led blinkers and HID headlights are also on it now.
I have put a 38mm bar riser on it and also a Comfort/Touring seat.
The seat is 20mm higher than stock and has more grip so you dont slide, also takes allot of pressure off the Nuts.

I just love this machine.
I wanted a white bike but when i found out it had a black frame i went for the Red on red, White with a red frame would look so sexy.

Here is some pics.

Very, very nice  [thumbsup]. i agonised over the red or black but I am a big fan of the stealth look so in the end black was my choice.

As for the mods....awesome!  [Dolph]

Now, can you please tell me where you got them? In particular, the seat cowl, and the LED lighting?

Thanks,
Chris

The seat Cowl i got from the US for $100 inc post, but i still have the factory one and screen on the way from the dealer when they arrive.
The LED blinkers i got off Ebay for $25 for the set of 4.
All my other mods are also Ebay, the carbon bits are 1/2 the price of the Factory bits and just as good.
The Comfort seat is an very worth while mod.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for the post, your Monster looks great. How easy was the tail tidy to install? I've knocked off my rear indicators by bumping them so I now have to get something done in this area. Which brand tail tidy??

Let me know if you want to sell your stock tail and lights as I'd be interested.

So I'm assuming all M696 parts fit the bike without a problem then? I've left mine stock for now, just learning to ride the thing atm... I love it!

Cheers,

Dino

Nice bike OP,

I'm keen to check out a 659 so might swing by Frasers on the weekend.

Hardest part would be deciding on the colour!

I'm leaning towards black (I think it's a matte black right?) or red frame/black tank.

Haha... yes I am looking to get back into the game. My licence has expired and all that so going for L's again next month hence looking at LAMS bikes.

620/659 might be a tough decision though (classic v new) and seeing as the rules require P's for 3 years now I want to actually make sure I have a decent bike!

Hope you and Jukie are well.

So I swung by Frasers on Saturday and saw the 659... virtually identical to the 696 really.

One of the benefits (over a 620) is ABS as an option (1k) so if I decided to go with a new 659 I'd probably get that...
Bike itself is $14,290 rideaway, and they aren't really budging on that at all because there is such limited stock available.
They said they'll do CF termis for 1.6k fitted so with ABS and pipes it comes to $16,890!

Fair bit of coin.... but it's shiny and new!

Title: Re: New Monster 659 delivered!

That's a whole lot of coin for a LAMS bike! $17k before you get to do anything else to it.
For half the price you can get a nice 620 that has Termi's already I think.
Not that I'm telling you to buy the other bike.

When I sold my 620 and went to what I have now the 1100s was top of my list.
The price is what put me off, at that time there was no change out of $30k thereabouts once you took pipes/ECU/filter into account.

You gotta wonder what that is going to cost you when it comes to insurance too.

Oh yeh I need to check up on insurance (for both bikes)

yes a 620 would be just over half the price... but it would be older, older technology/chassis, more kms etc... I'm liking the 659, except for the front headlight, hopefully there's a mod for that.

oh and even though its a 'lams bike' I'd have to keep it for 3 years anyway, hence I could justify spending money on a nicer/better bike that will serve me well...

Also I'm hoping resale on the 659 will stay up as when it's time to change a few years down the track my hypothetical ABS equipped 659 would be one of the first to hit bikesales as this generation moves onto their unrestricted licence...

Hmm I still have thinking to do.

Dont think the insurance should be to bad Matty.
My 696 is only $320 a year with QBE so would imagine a 659 would be around the same price?

For you perhaps ... unfortunately Stu has to worry about his:
. sex
. age
. address
. learner status
. participation on a certain Sydney Ozmo ride

All to his detriment. These all have a greater bearing on the premium he will pay than the motorbike he is insuring.

I would think that most people, regardless of what bike they are insuring, are paying waaay more than $320 p.a.

My comment was made based purely on the bike and obviously other things come into play as you have mentioned.

Maybe as a woman of 42 years of age and only 2 years riding experience in total we get better rates?

My bike was purchased new by my husband when i was on L's and was $355 for 12 months with me listed as the owner without a full licence.
QBE was the cheapest by a long way and i was quoted up to almost $1000 from other Insurers.

Yep $320 is great for a premium on your insurance, but there are lots of factors that come into play.
I don't think I ever paid that little for my insurance. But that a whole other can of worms.
Let's concentrate on pretty bikes and making them prettier still...

Can you elaborate more on this? I've been told there is an exhaust/ECU/filter upgrade soon to be available for the 659, but I'm assuming it's an upgrade purely to improve the exhaust note, not the power given it's a LAMS bike?

In the 620 vs 659 discussion...
I'm unsure of how the 659 is governed but know that the 620 is simply the infamous throttle stop plate which is an easy enough modification to remove.
I've made this point before but will reiterate that I feel that a governed 620 is dangerous for an experienced rider. Anyone with a 659 know whether it's a mechanical stop or an ECU thing that reduces the 659's power? (I'm also led to believe that they're quite a fair bit heavier... so some simple weight reduction could be a good option to gain some performance)

The 659 only has a throttle stop.

Ducm3, the exhaust/ECU/Filter kit for the 659 would put it well over the LAMS limit, thats why im waiting until after lams to start modifying the power of mine.

Is there anyone on here who has ridden a 696 and 659 back to back?
Any comments?

Nice... can you take a photo of it?

620 had shear bolts holding the plate in place so it was just a matter of using an easy out or dremel'ing the sides of the shear'd head so you could get some purchase on it.

Are you sure about this? Because I have been told that the 659 not only has a throttle stop, but also has an ECU restriction in place, which presumably would be removed upon installation of the exhaust/filter/ECU upgrade kit.

Hi Duc, as far as i have been told its just the throttle stop, that was from my dealer, he has no knowledge of the ECU thing.

Yes slip ons only (no ECU/airfilter etc)... also these pipes are the same as the 696 as far as I'm aware hence 659/696 pipes are interchangeable.

Thanks for sharing the pic of the restrictor, I was under the impression that the 659 was restricted in the ECU so it's a bit trickier than just modifying the pin in the 620.. I believe the restrictor in the 659 just limits how hard the bike revs or something? Anyway where there is a will, there is a way [to get around the restrictor] and a certain someone at a certain dealership may or may not have said that they can arrange for the ECU to be unrestricted so the bike can reach full revs.

I have a mate who builds bikes and took one look at the throttle stop and I had to stop him trying to take it off! It's a one way street for the LAMS reg, if it's modified then it's not a LAMS anymore.

From the specs, its a shorter stroke and the throttle stop. I'm not sure on the ECU mods, but I'm sure it has to have a different setup due to the cc difference and stroke so maybe they've detuned it too.

I'm no expert but I have enough power while learning and like the bike just the way it is.

Cheers,

Dino

G'day all! im new to the forum and have just purchased a new 659 a few weeks ago and loving every bit of it. Ive been curious about fitting aftermarket pipes on it. Some dealers say no some say yes, can anyone shed some light on this one??? Ive previousley had a hyosung gt250r with a two brothers exhaust fitted with no problems but am cautious with the 659 if it might bump the power too high for it to be LAMS?

Thanks!

Hi mate Welcome.

As a fellow 659 owner i have been looking at some pipes myself.
I am going to wait as i have heard that there is a, pipe/filter/ecu package coming for the 659 from Ducati.

Any pipes would more than likely put it over LAMS regs.
But not many Cops would know.
I was looking at a set of Arrows.

Thanks for that,
I didnt think slip-ons would add much of a change in power maybe around 2-3hp at the most? i could be wrong..
Has the dealer mentioned any more to you about the pipe/filter/ecu package? If its from termignoni then it would cost a mint...
Ive been looking into the akrapovic slip-on's myself, theyre not too badly priced either. Still doing my research though as i dont want to void LAMS regs.

Nah mate, mine has RDM-R32 on it.

Three questions on the restrictor:

1. Would you need any additional parts to derestrict it or is it simply a case of removing the restrictor?
2. Would you be able to restrict it again if you sold it so its still LAMS compliant? I.e. I'd like to keep the LAMS component for when I sell it as I believe it would have better resale value.
3. Are there likely to be any insurance implications if you remove the restrictor if you are not on your LAMS (I'm buying LAMS to keep the wife happy, I've had my full license for years so I have no LAMS restriction)

Cops may not, but if you prang it and go through insurance they may not cover if you are riding a non LAMS bike on your L's, then the cops may get involved then there's a whole ball of $hit you don't wanna have to deal with.

As mentioned, I'm not on my L's, I've had a full license for more 10 years, just getting a LAMS bike because my wife wasn't happy about me on a motorbike and as a compromise I offered to get a LAMS bike. Realistically we all know that a LAMS bike isn't gonna be any safer and its the rider that makes the difference, but if it means I can get a ducati and still keep her happy, its an option I'm prepared to take as a compromise. It was a big enough mission just getting her to okay the bike.

Next step will be a streetfighter or maybe I'll just replace it with the 1100 and hope she doesn't notice the difference.

does she keep your balls in a jar  ??

Marriage is a delicate balance. She lets me get away with a couple of extreme sports already but drew the line on the motorbike because we have a daughter. This was my compromise.

just my 2c... but I maintain that any of the LAMS restricted bikes with the throttle stop in place is dangerous for an experienced rider.. they're completely different without the throttle stop there.
Keep in mind you'll pay less on the second hand market for a NON LAMS bike, so maybe make the deal about capacity instead of LAMS.
If it needs to be LAMS to keep the minister for war and finance happy then just grab a LAMS620, remove the throttle stop and everyone is happy.

Awesome cans! I prefer those to the all carbon fibre ones actually. I swapped my stock mirrors for the all black rizoma class retro bar end mirrors, so much clearer and they dont vibrate no where near as much as the stock ones do & they look brilliant too.
Btw where did you get your tail tidy from? Love the look of it!

[thumbsup] looks awesome, i will pick up my 659 monday midday and can't wait. i have a few questions for 659 owners out there. Has anyone decided to remove the throttle stop?? i previously owned an ER6NL and the throttle stop was a torque screw in the throttle body, a 35 second job to remove and boom full powered. I know ducati have shown a bit more intelligence and put a plate there but it looks quite difficult to remove. i'm only 21 years old so i have a 3 year wait period on a full powered bike im just interested to know how a 659 goes unrestricted*** and how it was removing the stop.
cheers guys

Hi bjohnmac,
I have had my 659 since June and have thought several times about moving the throttle stop.
honestly even with it there the bike is quite quick, but i am looking forward to taking it off.
I had my first service two weeks ago and spoke to the mechanic.I asked what the restriction where, was it just the stop, or was the ECU restricted as well?
Yes it is both.
I will be getting an ECU flash when i get my new pipes, and he said you should get double the power.
:)

But otherwise its a great bike.

i finally got my last bit of Carbon Fiber today.

Pics coming soon.

Awesome... I got my M659 today, picked it up from frasers sydney this morning. Put 160 ks on it today and it's a fantastic bike, caught a lot of peoples eye and sounds unbelievable. I have on order carbon termignoni pipes already and will be fitted on it's first 1000 ks service that includes air filter and ECU and honestly cannot wait. my dad has them on his streetfighter and im so jealous  ;) i have seen a few photos up on here of attempts at removing the throttle stop and looks like a complete hack job. i know the 659 is stroked differently to the 696 but it would be interesting to see how it went simply without the throttle stop. im not at all a fast rider and quite honestly more about looking after and maintaining my bike than racing, but would love to know that i have full power at the twist of my right wrist LOL :P

Will it still be under LAMS regs with the termi's on? Or are these the new LAMS friendly termis people have been talking about?

i do not believe there is a 'lams friendly' termi exhaust. this will put it over lams regulations but am willing to run the risk for the sound :P  [thumbsup]

By all reports they are LAMS friendly with all noise and no extra power.
But you should be able to get a Tune later.

Do you mind if i ask how much the Termi/ECU/Filter costs?

Im still deciding weather to get slip ons for mine or not, i was looking at either akrapovic or arrow. I just want to unleash more of that sound!

John at Noosa sent my bits yesterday they should be here tomorrow. Also the Termi's ECU etc, for the 659 will only add sound, no power. So i will still have to get a tune after i get off LAMS, but it will sound better until then.

Just have a quick question for fellow monster owners and in particular 659 owners. Im interested in getting the rizoma clear timing belt covers, i just want to make sure they'll fit the 659, if i were to buy the 696 ones.

Thanks guys

BM, they should fit as it is basically a 696.
I got a set of Carbon covers for a 696 and they fit fine.

Hope i am posting in the right place but for those of you who have a 659 and want to disable the throttle restrictor i have found the perfect way with out any cutting or damage .You may have already worked this out but iv e been searching for a answer and have found none . Firstly as i did we have been looking at the side the throttle restrictor is on for ways to remove right... well where the top of restrictor is bolted on with the top bolts sheered of that is actually a long threaded bolt which goes through to the other side of carby with a lock tight nut on the other side .Undo the nut on the other side and pull out. Then carefully with screw driver of some sought push the restrictor plate forward.Replace threaded bolt back through and place another nut on the other end and its done you wont regret it i promise [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [evil] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap]

i ll try with the pics not that handy with photo tech stuff but it is the top bolt that holds restrictor in place has a hex spacer behind it follow through to the other side of bike and there is a nut holding it together ,once you pull the long threaded bolt out the hex spacer on the restrictor plate can be pushed towards the front of the bike to allow full throttle movement place the bolt back through ,note there is a spacer between carbs buy a lock tight nut to replace where hex spacer joined the bolt. i will try with pics!!!!!

I know its tempting to release that power but just remember how much of that power youll actually be unleashing...
Im not going to fiddle with my restrictors in any way, i plan on trading mine in once i get my full licence so i dont want to ruin the value of it but goodluck with it anyway.

thats the thing, these 659's will hold their value very well, look at the 620ie lams bikes from 7 years ago.
These bikes still sell for $10000.

I am looking at going up to a 796 when i get off my RE licence.

Yup! Agreed!

As much as i would kill for a streetfighter 848 i think it would kill me first [laugh] so ill be very happy with a hypermotard 796 ;D

I may just pass the 659 on to the missus so she can get her licence.

After a long discussion with one of the blokes at ducati accessories at fraser mc sydney he said they have the green light to use the termi's from the 696 and apparently it wont increase the 659's power so it will still be under LAMS, you might get a little more tourque but thats about it. Im yet to get clarification about other slip on's, i just like making sure its 100% okay so im not wasting around $1500 of hard earned cash!

After plenty of toing & froing over the cost, how long I will keep the bike etc etc I just had Northside at Artarmon put the Termi's on my 659 at the 1000k service.........all I can say is WOW it is a completely different bike, not just the sound of course but the power delivery is much smoother, whole bike feels much more responsive......can highly recommend it [thumbsup]

I'm all for making the bikes run loud and as fast as they can, just thinking the combination of the mods adding a little bit of power and making the whole bike a bit lighter will add up. Looks like if you add 1kW of power and loose 4kgs will be pretty close to no LAMS.

Ditto, i see what your saying and thats been my main concern since i bought the 659. Having said that if the police did pull you over theres no way they can prove that your over the power to weight ratio limit, unless they whacked out a set of scales and a dyno on the side of the road and officially tested it that way [laugh] i could be wrong :P

Title: Re: New Monster 659 delivered!
Post by: Rowdy on December 02, 2011, 01:32:53 PM
Yeah, unlikely.

Plus if they are going to do that, I would argue that the weight of the actual rider needs to be taken into consideration. My 100kgs would be close to making the S4R LAMS approved (not really but you get the point).

The main concern alot of people seem to have is the insurance companies knocking back a claim. I can't really comment on that because I've only ever had one insurance claim when I flipped my heavily modified ZX12R (definitely not LAMS, and no illegal mods mind you). Insurance company paid it out and even let me grab some add-on bits off the bike before they took it. They didn't seem to look for illegal mods, but that may be something that varies between assessors.

Spoke to northside mc over the weekend and they said they can do a stainless termi system for the 659 for $1500 installed. Its a 2 hr installation they told me and were very helpful. I think thats a pretty good deal! I might go ahead with that  ;D

Well its been a while since i've posted here, i moved to SA and they gave me an open licence, so, i De-restricted the little Duke.
Wow, it is like a new bike.

And as she is running in more the fuel econ is getting better.
The last tank i got nearly 300 from the tank, thats including 30 kays from the reserve.

The next thing is the pipes and ECU kit.

The guys @ Italian Motorcycles in SA are great.

Has anyone here been notified of a recall??????????

Apparently theres a possibility of cracks in the fuel line? have a look at the link down below, so does that mean the only 659's affected are the ABS models? It doesnt state the standard ones are affected...

I havent noticed anything like that on my 659 latley.

I better ring frasers tomorrow just incase....

Best to be safe and follow through, or one day you might get a real HOT ride. They can only say your OK or if not, fix it.

Its all good news apart from the inconvenience.

A few years ago my mate watched his 906 Paso burn down to charred lump of metal and rubber when his fuel line fractured (so his mechanic surmised later), he got some minor inside leg burns when he got fuel on his leathers from riding along not realising the engine was ablaze.

Given the rise in "heated grip" modifications in these parts, It wouldn't surprise me if it was a heating mod.
