Title: Boots getting scratched badly - Monster 696, sharp edges?
Post by: metroplex on June 05, 2011, 12:54:54 PM
My Alpinestars SuperTech R boots are getting scratched badly on the inboard sides (facing the bike). I cannot figure out why they are getting scratched this badly other than that there are sharp edges. I have a 09 696, all stock external parts. I have difficulty finding my sidestand while I am on the bike, so I can attest that the lower thermoplastic part of the heel is scratched by me searching for the sidestand. However, I cannot figure out why the leather is getting cut.

Anyone experience something similar and figure out a solution? I planned to go over the sides of the bike with a grinder to find any metal parts that have burs and edges. I know I cut my shins a few times on the foot rests when I wore shorts and just went to move the bike around in my garage for maintenance.

Sounds like that POS bike is messing up your boots big time. I'd dump it ASAP before real boot damage is done. I'm sure some friendly DMFer will take that boot abuser off your hands cheap and fast. [thumbsup] [laugh] [laugh]

Translated: I have no freaking idea what's doing it. Sharp edges somewhere for sure. 696 owners chime in.

I have a 2010 696 and haven't observed this at all wearing alpinestars smx5 boots, or any of my other shoes. Sure that you are holding your feet on the rear sets fully on the peg and not holding them twisted inwards towards the bike in some way?

I normally ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs. I have size 12 Supertech R's. I did have to adjust the gearshift lever to the maximum amount so I could shift comfortably if that tells you anything, but I do see some scratches on the right boot as well.

put some cream or shoe polish (something you can get off) on the boots. ride it and see where it leaves a mark on the rearset

I'm still thinking you should dump this load of a bike ASAP. Boots always take president over Ducatis. [laugh] [laugh] Sorry... my shit stirring gene has taken over! [laugh] Sorry, I'll stop now. Just bored watching the Mavs/Heat game. ;D

I think I found the cause. The standard rear sets / foot pegs have a mold flash on the outermost tip. I have actually cut my legs a few times on these pegs just moving the bike around in the garage. This edge is razor sharp. I managed to file them down and used 1000 grit sandpaper to round out the edges. Hopefully this fixes the problem. I noticed my left boot is really scuffed up on the inboard leather, the top thermoplastic area, and the bottom thermoplastic area. The right boot is only slightly scuffed because the edge wasn't as sharp and I don't have to use a sidestand there.

Do you notice how your tires sometimes get dirty from touching the road?

God I hate that!

Normally I wouldn't care about scuff marks on the boots, but these scratches were getting deep and were starting to tear the sides of the boots. The Supertech R are over $400 a pair and having them develop holes on the sides is kind of dumb. If I wore them out on the soles, sliders, etc... I wouldn't even complain or post on a board.

Sounds like maybe you found the issue and have hopefully dulled it's boot cutting edge. I wouldn't like my scooter messing up my $400 boots either. Shit stirring gene is off today. ;D

^^ This!

I have a freshly coated driveway and the garage dust combined with the driveway make a slippery combination. I've had to "dirt bike" it when my rear kicked out a few times.

Plan on painting the floors one of these years.

I epoxy painted my garage floor at my new house in 2005. For a moment it looked like a freaking operating room! [thumbsup] Then in 2006 we had a horrible draught and all the cracks that were sealed and painted over reappeared with a vengeance! So my whole garage floor, which looked beautiful the year before, went to shit in just a year! All the previous cracks came back and looked worse than you could believe! Rivers of broken floor paint everywhere! If I had to do it over again I would have stained the concrete. Not painted it! At least the foundation/draught cracks wouldn't have been so bad with the stain. Live and learn. [bang]

Usually, I wouldn't care about wearing out my flip flops, but these wear marks were getting pretty deep and were starting to wear thru the sole of the sandals.  These Nordstrom brand sandals are over $40 a pair and having them develop wear marks on the bottom of the soles is kind of dump.  If I wore them out on the top of the sole, straps, etc....  I wouldn't even complain or post on a board.

It's also pretty weird that Ducati designed the sidestand so that it is right under the rear set. I can barely flick out the sidestand, I have to search for the damn thing under the foot peg. Honda and the other Japanese bikes tend to have these large bars connected to the sidestand for easier deployment.

I'm sure you can find someone to weld something easily to it. I wonder if your stand got bent in somehow? I never recalled having any problems when I had my 696.

On another matter, I absolutely hate the OEM pegs Ducati uses. The bare ball end are so slippery and useless. Switched mine out to a set from Nichols and they are so much better. [thumbsup]

My 09 696 stand is tucked under the footpeg, but the part that I have to kick down is also right under the peg. I have to pry up the spring loaded footpeg to kick down the stand. I also noticed that there's a few degrees of play when I rest the bike on the stand, I thought it was just my stand but the other bikes in the dealer do it as well. I put the bike on stands and found that there was indeed a few degrees of play at the joint.

Do you have any pics of your footpegs?

The stock pegs on my 696 are just cast aluminum. It's not even rubber coated like on the Hondas. I can see how they cut costs/corners big time on the 696 versus the 1100 Evo. The 1100 has a nice rear set, almost the same as the Superbikes.

Its the same with my '11 696, the stand is under the peg.. I have to look, push up the peg, then down goes the stand..
Guess they changed the design on the newer ones...

I like the Rizoma and other aftermarket rear sets but they are kind of pricey.

My boosts are scratched to hell on the outside edges, I seem to miss the damn sliders and scrap the rubber 1/2 the time.

Rizoma rearsets are awesome!

I'm so used to the 696 kick stand that I don't even look for it, I just know instinctively where it is. I also wear a us size 12 alpine stars boot.

Glad you found the culprit.
