Title: who knows how to make plaster molds?
Post by: ducatiz on June 07, 2011, 11:47:11 AM
I want to make some simple molds to do fibreglass layup.

Who can walk me thru it?  Beer can be proffered, or whisky.

A long read, and not plaster molds, but the best DIY description I've ever seen:

I'm doing this right now for my friends bike, but again, not plaster. I made a fiberglass mold from the old panel and I'm in the process of trying to get it close to perfect so I can make a blank from it. Then perfect the blank and make another mold of that panel. Use the final mold to make the final finished product. The reason I had to go about it this way is because the panel I'm replacing is actually bent, warped, and melted so it's in terrible condition to start with. It's the lower center fairing that's located behind the front wheel. It had been pushed into the exhaust and melted to shit.  I'm also making it a custom panel that will have the Thundercats logo for the air vent openings instead of the boring OEM look. I've got the mold done and will be making the blank soon. Still got quite a ways to go on it but this should give you an idea.

Why fiberglass?  Why not CF?

WWW.fiberglast.com (//http://) has some great instructions and very good customer support.  I played with making simple parts like heel guards, heat shields and a license plate bracket.

the original part is aluminum.  it's not crazy heavy, but anything is an improvement.  plus, I'd like it to be cheap.

I bought a yard of cf and the necessary stuff for right around $75.  I used the heel guards and heat shield from my 748 as forms.  Just make sure you polish, wax and apply lots of mold release.
