Title: Discouraged! Bad Starter and trouble removing Stator Cover
Post by: az_monster97 on June 14, 2011, 08:06:16 PM
Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but so far it seems like a knowledgeable group of people here  :)  I'll give you a little history to my problem...

OK, so i bought a 1997 M750 Monster with 12K miles but after only riding it for an hour I replaced the battery because it was old and weak even after charging.  The day after I replaced the battery, the starter relay toasted on me and i had to order one of those.  After i replaced that, I thought maybe corroded grounds or exposed wires were causing my electrical problems so i cleaned up the terminals on the battery and grounds though out the bike.  While trying to remove the starter bolt (it was seized)  I broke the stupid starter bolt off inside the starter so now i have to rebuild the starter.  ARGHHH!  [bang] The problem is that i cannot remove the stator cover to get the starter out for a rebuild at a local shop.  I got all the bolts out but it (the cover) won't budge.  Is there a special tool that i need to remove the cover?  if so, can it be made or fabricated?...or must i order one.  I'm getting discouraged because I've only ridden the bike an hour before the starter solenoid crapped out on me and now with 2 hours of ride time on the bike, the starter took a crap on me  [bang] I'm itching to ride but so far, it seems i have to special order everything or find Ebay parts since the OE parts are very expensive (which is why I'm having the starter rebuilt), and to be honest, I'm rather impatient.  It's a tedious process to track down parts for Ducati's which even further discourages me.  HELP!  or at least direct me to a post that covers this topic because I'm too damn frustrated right now to even think about it after I post this.  I'm going to take a break for today and have a  [drink]

motowheels and ca cycleworks sell the tool to remove the stator cover. It's a piece of bar stock with two bolts that thread into the inspection cover holes, and one large one that you turn and it pushes the cover off like a puller. hard to explain, but just google it.

I have a 2001 750 and i just pulled the stator cover and ordered a new stator ... there is a bolt almost behind the primary sprocket  be sure it is removed i used a rubber malet and it came loose and stator is being built at RICKS MOTORSPORT  for  $140 better the OEM  one is  465 BONES . My stator was grouned out on two of the three yellow wires .

If you put your master cylinder back on and pump your clutch a few times it should push the stator cover out far enough that you can pull it off.

Edit: Slave cylinder, correct, thanks  :)

Actually it's the slave cylinder, but yep, that works.

Always worth taking a look at the "Tutorials" ..............................

A cheap car steering wheel puller will work too.  You don't need the tool, but it makes life much easier.
