Title: starting and bogging issue
Post by: pitbull on June 15, 2011, 01:53:50 PM
bike: 2000 m900

The last few weeks it's been taking a number of presses of the starter button for the bike to start. The bike burps when I press the button but won't fully turn over. Somewhere between 5-15 presses and it burps, turns over and starts up fine. Originally I thought it might be a battery or an electrical issue, but the bike also bogs down while riding and wants to stall for the first few blocks. Once I get onto the highway, it no longer wants to stall, but it still bogs down when I back off the throttle.

My extremely rudimentary (cannot stress this enough) mechanical knowledge tells me it's a fuel delivery issue........maybe the fuel pump?

any insights would be very much appreciated.

Could you explain "The bike burps when I press the button but won't fully turn over" a little more?  Slow cranking speed?  Catches but doesn't start?

I have same 'bike. It has NEVER started from cold unless the twistgrip is turned open a little BEFORE I hit the starter button. And it will not settle into a reliable idle until the motor has warmed up. Even when warm the idle is very lumpy.

If it had carbies I would sync them and raise both slides a little, but it's fuel injected.

I spoke to our local Duc guru Brad Black about this and he said that model couldn't be sorted for low idle speed properly so I just put up with it.

Often I do an 900 km highway ride and take off at 4 a.m. so as to make sure I get to my destination well before sunset. With the twistgrip about 1/8th open the motor springs to life instantly with quite a roar.

There's nuthin' like the sound of unbaffled Staintunes early in the morning :-)  Fortunately my neighbours agree the Duc sounds very noice.

"catches but doesn't start" might be a better way to explain it, although the "catch" is very brief.

Hmmm........intersting.

I will give this a try today  before I start pulling apart fuel lines and stuff

thanks

although, it wouldn't explain the bogging down issue, unless that's a seperate problem  [bang]

Check your plugs.
