Title: Help Identifying Engine and supporting mods
Post by: az_monster97 on June 20, 2011, 05:08:38 PM
OK, so i bought my 1997 Monster M750....or at least that's what the title says.  The guy i bought it from was the second owner and didn't really know much about it except hearsay from the original owner.  I'm trying to identify if my engine is a 750 or 900 because supposedly, it has a 900cc swap.  Is there anywhere stamped on the engine a code or a displacement badge or marking?  As far as i can tell the M750's were wet clutch but mine has an open clutch cover with a dry clutch on the right side of the bike, and according to the Haynes manual, only 900cc's and above had the dry clutch.  I'm just trying to identify exactly what i have so i can get the right parts for it if i need them.    It seems to have a bit of mods to it as well including an Arrow dual carbon fiber exhaust and some kind of "race" only application Keihn carb on it that i cannot seem to find any details on.  I guess thats the price you pay for buying a used bike from a 3rd owner who doesn't know anything about it.  Any information about helping me identify the engine or some information on the carb would be greatly appreciated.I can provide pics if that will help in identifying what i have.

Dry clutch = 900

Unless the previous owner spent more than the cost of a used 900 motor to convert it from wet to dry  ;D

As for the carbs, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts they are the Keihin 41mm FCRs - Those are pretty much the most popular aftermarket carbs for the 900s, and I'd be surprised if they are something else. Do they say "FCR" on the side?

They are also great carbs.

FCRs are the next best thing to FI imo.  Really quality carbs, also they usually say FCR on the side in big letters and have a rather distinctive look (they are physically quite large).

Thanks for the quick response.  I'm at work right now but I'll post pictures on lunch break

Damn, that's a long lunch break  ;D

And I'll echo what bikepilot said: FCR carbs are the next best thing to fuel injection.  [thumbsup]
