Title: front wheel brake drag
Post by: Bones on June 24, 2011, 03:03:59 PM

'02 Monster 620

ok, so I noticed that with my front end up, I can only spin the front wheel freely 3/4 of a turn before it stops.

thought I might have the axle misaligned or something, so took off the calipers and then it's spinning properly. several, several, several revolutions before it even wants to slow down. I'm also eyeballing the rotors while it's spinning and they are straight and true.

put the calipers back, pump the front brake until firm and back to the same situation: hard to turn, 3/4 spin until wheel stops.

so is this normal?  should I bleed brakes to be safe?

Are you able to push/pull the pads away from the rotor?  Can you hear the pads dragging on the rotor?

yes, I can spread the pads fairly easily. can't say I hear the pads dragging, but i wouldn't doubt they're dragging a bit.

think it's loosening up. now it spins about 1 and a half times. bike's been in storage for almost a year so I think the bike just needs to be driven so they can loosen up.

checked against the front wheel of my 996 and I can spin that one freely about 2 times before it stops, so I think i'm ok.

I just had this problem after doing a tire change. I ended up swapping the inside pad for the outside. Now your 620 only has 1 front brake,so it will not be that time consuming. When I fixed mine, I took one side's pads out then spun the wheel. it made 3 or 4 revs before stopping, so I knew what side was causing the problem.

Just ride the bike, it's fine.

Brake dust and dirt on the exposed part of the pistons can cause brake drag. Clean em up like this http://www.onthethrottle.com/howto/proper-brake-cleaning/ (http://www.onthethrottle.com/howto/proper-brake-cleaning/)
