Title: Magnets under the tank cover on a 696
Post by: ManaloEA on June 28, 2011, 08:17:14 PM
Has anyone tried gluing rare earth magnets under the tank covers in order to use a magnetic tank bag? It just seems that having straps all over the place would look stupid and would be a PIA to attach and remove all the time.

Wow... That's actually a really good idea.  Going to have to be some strong glue though... But I can't see any other major issues coming up.  You can just use some ferrous metal instead prob so you won't have random metal clinging to your tank.

Yeah, I used two part epoxy to glue some rare earth magnets under the plastic panels on my wife's 09 F650GS twin.  Worked okay, but we ended up selling the bike.

She is using the strap on little wolfman tankbag on the monster.  (The older I get the more I try to keep it simple)  [laugh]

Did you have any problems with bag slippage at higher speeds? or problems getting the magnets mounted on the underside? Do you think Liquid Nails might have a product for this type of application?

No, it worked fine for 13,000+ miles.  I sanded the plastic underside after locating where I wanted the magnets to go, used jbweld I believe.
