Hi guys~ I need major help with my 2000 Monster750 Dark.
It just won't start.... even if I get it to start, after it warms up, if I give a little throttle it make very weird muffled sound like air is trapped and engine dies.
At first I thought it was because of old battery so I replaced with brand new one and the first day of putting the new battery seemed to working fine. But next day it started all over again.
It just won't start even if it did, it died right after I give a little throttle.
I just have no idea what the problem is... and I'm really low on cash right now so taking it to the dealer or the shop is out of the question. I'm trying to fix it if I can do it.
My best guess is either charging system or the carburetor is gone bad, maybe...
I really don't know. I would love get some help and advices from the forum members how to go about this problem. So please leave any kind of messages that can be useful for me to use.
If any members who loves to fix or work on a project and lives around Seattle, WA. area, would so kindly come and take a look at my bike I'd appreciated very much. I in Federal Way just south of Seattle. Just drop me a line~ If someone who lives nearby come to look and fix the bike, I'll repay or compensate you somehow as long as the bike start running normally~
Thanks so much everyone~
Sounds like carburetor issue- perhaps plugged main jets? The sound your talking about is it dying from not getting enough fuel and sputtering out.
What is your level of mechanical aptitude?
I would take apart carbs, remove all intact rubbers/ replace the perished ones. Clean the carb passages with a fine guitar wire and soak/boil the carb parts in a carb dip like Yamaha Carb Dip Cleaner. Check all jets are clean, reassemble and reinstall.
I know it sounds like alot, but work carefully and do one carb at a time so you can use the other one as a reference for reassembly, but a manual would be a good buy too.
Might be a good opportunity to check spark plugs, ignition just to be safe- but definitely sounds like a fuel issue to me.
Was the bike out of use for a while? If so, how was it stored? Full tank? Stabilizer added? How does the furl smell? Have you looked at the spark plugs?
Thanks 2-Skinny for your reply~
my motorcycle mechanical skills are very little, a beginner at best.
so I wish I could those things you wrote but even if I could, it'd be probably really risky to taking a carb apart.
But I would definitely check the spark plugs and ignition.
Thanks again~
Thanks Howie for your reply~
Yes, I rode the bike all last summer and a few times in the fall through last November which is the time I started to have the problem. It was garaged all through the winter and spring up until this past May. In between times I tried to start up the bike, but the problem continued. The tank's about quarter full since last November cause I couldn't ride it obviously. I don't have a stabilizer and haven't smelled the furl. But I should most definitely check the spark plugs like you mentioned.
Thanks so much~
Please keep these great advices coming~ Thanks guys~
Drain your fuel, and start with fresh fuel, fuel filter, and spark plugs.

Probably too obvious to be of any use, but make sure the exhaust isn't obstructed.
However, it has been sitting, a rodent could have decided a muffler was a great 'house'

+1. If you didn't stabilize the fuel it will break down and be less than useful. If you've got a wire brush you can probably get away with cleaning the plugs instead of replacing them, but depending on what plugs you're buying it might just be easier to buy a new set and eliminate them as a potential source of trouble.
Drain the carb float bowls too. On the right side, near the back of the engine, you will see two black plastic tubes. Follow them up and you will get to the float bowl drains. You will see an (I think) a screw with an 8mm. head. This is the drain. Loosen the screws and fuel will flow through the tubes.
You stated when you installed the new battery the bike worked properly for a day. Have you been keeping the battery on the charger between attempted starts?
