Title: 98 m900 trouble
Post by: lawmaster891 on June 30, 2011, 11:37:46 PM
so today i fill up my bike with shell 93 octane. i then drive 40 miles back to my house. later on i leave to go to a friends and about 20 miles into the trip the bike starts bogging on me so i go to pull over and it dies and wont start. I sit on the side of the road for about 15 mintes and it starts fine and i make it the other 20 miles to my friends. same thing happens again on the ride home. i put a stage 2 dynojet on the bike about 3 weeks ago and put about 400 miles on the bike since and had no problems till today. can anyone suggest what is wrong.

When it quits, open the tank and listen for a vacuum sound, it could be a clogged tank vent

thank you for the quick reply. i looked at the tank cent and that would make sense. i removed my evap canister and have the tank vent routed down by the swingarm and when i looked at it today their was a kink in the vent line. i will keep and eye on the vent and let post if it still does it.

Another thought is that having tinkered with the hoses to change your jets, the hoses may be starting to decay a bit and you might have rotted bits of hose clogging that tiny screen filter that goes into the carbs. Happened to me on my '95.

well i had more trouble today and this time the vent didnt have any kinks. i was on my way home from work and was going 65 mph, a semi was going very slow so i gave it full throttle to get around him. when i hit 75-80mph  it was fine for a sec and then started to bog until i let off the throttle and slowed down. then everytime after it would do the same thing. any ideas?

Sounds like fuel starvation/constriction of some sort....(ah yup thank you Captain Obvious)

do you have that diaphragm fuel pump?...

if so, it is possible that it is partially compromised and will limp along at lower RPMs/Fuel demands

but when you open up the bike it cannot keep up with the demand

otherwise it is some sort of clogging issue ....like time to change-out the fuel filters

and make sure all the hoses are routed in a way that doesn't pinch them

ok so i found that one of the carb vent lines was kinked so i rerouted those and it ran fine this morning had great power through the gears, but after work again i noticed that when a high wind hit me when i was cruising at around 75 it had some bog and the bike would slow some.

The carb vents need to be in fairly still air, do you still have the pods on the ends?

no i had removed the pods and put a t on the lines and did have it routed to the side of the engine but when i rerouted them i routed it to up by the battery

I took off the vacuum petcock and she fired right up...
First I ran the tank right to the carbs and it fired without any issues.
Then just back tracked from there from the fuel pump then to the petcock.  So I now have a manual petcock in its place. I plan to hit the road tomorrow a bit so we will see...I will post at the end of the weekend.

Been there, done that.

I had a similar experience years ago after a service that involved carb adjustments.

Problem turned out to be the feul line from the tank to the pump (or petcock, whichever comes first). The line looked good, but when the bike heated up, the line softened enought that it would kink. Sit at the side of the road a while; hose cools off and the kink pops out  ;D

Solution, carefully reroute the fuel line so the bend isn't under stress [thumbsup]

If that is the original pump on your 98' and it's has not been rebuilt, you need to do it. I'd bet it's shot.

Ca-Cycleworks sells a rectangular replacement that works, although not ideal.

You can rebuild it with a kit, but stay away from the Winderosa rebuild kits, the membranes tear in no time.

thanks ill have to look into that though it only has 6000 original miles

don't matter that it has only 6k miles. That fuel pump membrane is OLD.

Mikuni rebuild kit is cheap and the fix is easy. +1 on avoiding the Winderosa kit.

Hi Crash  Where ya been?

Aw man... I been busy. Lots of flying all around the world. Commuting on the bike, but very little play.

I've also strayed; bought an '02 Sprint ST for more convenience commuting. Never liked it.

Sad thing is I'm back on the board because I'm selling my Monster and all the go fast (or look fast) parts. I'm getting rid of two older bikes that take time that I don't have to keep roadworthy and getting a single new bike with warranty.

But man I LOVE this board! I've been over on the BMW Superbikes board learning about K1300S quirks. That board has NOTHING on this one; not the traffic, not the personality, not the character. I may have to hang out here some even when I don't have a Monster anymore  ;)

Well, as long as there are still carby Monsters on the road, I will actually have something to contribute. In addition to my wit and seasoned (read: old) life insights of course  ;D

Spent a couple hours with Eric at Clubhouse Motorsports today. Mostly confirming what I'd already been through on the bike but, as always, learning a couple more things along the way...
