I picked up a 95 900 Super Sport engine to replace the broken engine in my 98 M750. I'm working on the switch now and all is going well except I'm perplexed by the tachometer drive located on the horizontal head of the SS engine. I don't need the thing since I have a DP electronic tach mounted on the bike. It looks like the thing is not going to leak oil but it is sticking up from the head and there is an exposed shaft that will rotate in the open air. Has anyone had experience with one of these and know of parts to cap this thing off?
Push comes to shove, a local machine shop should be able to make you a plug.
Yes, that would work but I'm hoping to find a cheaper solution. Like something I can pick up at the hardware store [laugh]. This project is on a very low budget.

Half wat down page, "Alloy Tachometer Block Off Cap" ... double check the size, but metric for tach drive is likely the same...
Hey, that is really what I had in mind. Do you have any idea what size it is? I'll check the diameter of mine but I don't have access to a XS to check its size.
I believe the size is 14mm.... not sure thread pitch, and I sold my XS650 so I don't have anything to compare too... if yours is 14mm thread pitch is probably the same...
Find a solution...?
No, not yet. I've installed the engine and have had some trouble shooting to do to get it to run. First there was a gas leak. Then I had an electrical gremlin. That took about a week. Now I'm giving the FCR carbs a good cleaning. The engine was backfiring and not making good power. Once I get it running like it should I'll get back to capping the tachometer drive. When I started I didn't anticipate all these problems. I was optimistic that all I had to do was spend a few days doing the swap and then figure out a way to cap the drive. I'm glad I'm not paying by the hour for this install.
