So I just hit 650miles on my 696 monster, and the service engine light is on. The Dealer in Villa Park, IL says it'll be $250 and I need my first oil change...does this sound right???
that's pretty expensive for a 1st service... mine was about $90, and the first service is basically a glorified oil change.
i would check other dealers and see what they say about the pricing.
Hell even FBF only charges around $150 for the first service (which yes, is mostly just an oil change and chain check/adjustment).
I wound up doing it myself (parts/fluids purchased from them) and then paying them WAY TOO MUCH to reset the service light and double-check my work. But again, still WAY cheaper than your quote.
I was quoted $300 from the first dealer (where I purchased the bike) and $150 from the second dealer. The problem is the second is quite a ride away, and I'm already well over 620 miles right now. I am guessing by the time that I get the bike there, unless I truck it, its going to be over 1,000.
FWIW, the dealer here in CO charges about $135 for an oil change; half-hour labor at $95/hr, $25 for filter and bits and close to $50 for their recommended Motul synthetic. I'd guess chain adjustment and other checks would eat up an additional 1/2 hour labor.
Go back to your dealer and point out that Ducati advise ALL dealers that the initial service is to be done in 1.0 hours and should include an oil and filter change, a chain adjustment, and a test ride. See what they say. If they give you the "huh?" response, send them to this: http://www.bikeland.org/story.php?storyID=30661. (http://www.bikeland.org/story.php?storyID=30661.)
Ducati recommend a charge of $144.38 for the 600 mile service (including parts), as they're trying to remove the stigma attached to Ducati for so long regarding the maintenance intensity and expense of their motorcycles. If the dealer stick to their $300 quote, call Ducati North America and see if they can "persuade" your dealer to be more fair in their treatment of Ducati's customers!
This type of dealer is what got Ducati this reputation in the first place.
Guess I got duped as well...I just dropped $270 on my 600 mile service (2011 Monster 696). Breakdown of cost: Tech time: An automatic 2hrs ($198.00), MOTO Racing 4T 10W50 4L Full Synthetic (53.99) and Oil Cartridge ($17.86). Isn't that expensive for about 3qts of oil? And I know it didn't take 2hrs to do...Coleman Powersports, Falls Church, VA. I bought my bike from them so I figured I'd continue using them but, I think I'll take my chances elsewhere from what I've seen for reviews.
Anybody in the DC Metro area have a line on a quality, honest dealer nearby? Thanks
Hey Touareg154, welcome to the board. Guess you figured out why I call Coleman the local screw-cati dealer. [laugh]
Check out the CAM section for all the locals and for this thread about shops: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=2755.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=2755.0)
Yep, Now I know! Thanks for the link.
I am grateful that my "local" dealer (85 miles away) is so good. Their prices are always fair and they do not do work you do not need. They are the only game even remotely close to me so if they weren't so good I probably wouldn't/couldn't own a Ducati. If I remember correctly my 600 mile for my 696 cost about $100.

Jim,
How about posting the identity of this good dealer so that other members can bring them their business?

The name of the dealer is Williamsville Performance. It is Holland NY (South of Buffalo NY). Apparently is used to be in Williamsville. It is the only Ducati Dealer in the Western Part of NY. In fact I think the next closest dealer for me is actually in Ontario Canada. Besides Ducati they sell Moto Guzzi, KTM, Husqvarna. Al and Jeff are the guys at Williamsville. I know there are a few on the board that share my opinion on Williamsville. http://www.fasteurobikes.com/ (http://www.fasteurobikes.com/)

Indy Ducati down in Indianapolis treated me well... but thats 3-4 hours from you.
Do a full syn oil change yourself and let them charge 1 hour for the check up .

Coleman's has an assrape charge that's included with every service. They guarantee at least a 50% surcharge on any service performed. If you can find a higher surcharge, they'll match it.
As far as the materials, that's not astronomical -- it's 4 Litres of oil, not 3 q, and if you buy it yourself at Advance Auto, the Mobil1 4t is either 9 or 10$ per quart (your bike has about a 3.8L oil change). that's a Ducati factory filter and about what they cost.
the problem is that they claim 2 hours. Ducati has issued a bulletin on the matter:
