Recently, i've noticed that a few times when coming to a stop at a stop sign my bike is actually stalling. The bike is new(only 50 miles so far). Usually what i'm doing when coming to a stop is this.....break to slow down a little, then shift down to first gear and then start wit both brakes again while pulling in the clutch until full stop(not letting the clutch out either). I also notice that on a normal summer day that just starting the bike, it will stall out. i would think you wouldn't need to mess with the "choke" lever when its an 80 degree day and the bike is garage kept. Could their be something wrong with the bike? any advice, thanks.
You may still need a bit of choke starting, even if it's 80F out. Does it stall if you come to a stop with the bike in neutral? If NOT, it could be the clutch dragging.
JM
No, i haven't ever put it in neutral while at a stop sign. it's actually stalling upon coming to the stop at the stop sign...not when i'm actually stopped at the stop. if i come to a stop and it's running it never stalls while stopped.
could be many things, but does it do it worse (die faster) if you stop harder?
no...this is during side street riding...no more than 35-40mph. Only had bike for approx a month, hadn't had any real hard stops. this is goin down a side street, knowing the stop sign is approaching, getting down to 1st gear before the stop, and easing it to a stop. it's almost like, i might be easing it too much into the stop. should i maybe just stop in 2nd gear, and once stopped, go down to first. we were taught in the MSF to kinda get down to 1st first as we were stopping.
I would just start pulling the clutch in sooner as I rolled to the stop and see what happens
JM
will try that...thanks.
You're not slipping the clutch as you are stopping, are you? I always have my clutch all the way in while I am stopping (meaning, <5mph and <10ft from stop). Coming up to a stop, it's proper slowing and gear changes with rev-matching.
I don't remember my MSF instructor saying HOW to be in first when stopped, just that you should be...
Is the bike cold when this happens? mine does this but when its "cold" meaning i just started it and took off and went to the end of my street pulled the clutch in to stop and it dies, if i let the bike worm up first it does not do this anymore.
It switches over to the battery when you are not moving and will start back up when you go to takeoff ;D
Mine does this also when cold. It's really not a "jump on and ride" bike, I always have to choke it and give it a minute or two before taking off when first starting for the day or after sitting for several hours or it'll do exactly as you describe to me until it's warm. Usually at the stop sign down the street. And the cars will all stare at me funny because they think I've stalled it. It's usually somewhat cool in the morning, even in the summer so I still find I have to let it warm up.
Our CBR you can jump on and ride and it cold anytime, the Monster not so much.
