It's supposed to be a Pandora-, Rhapsody-, Last.fm (streaming music app)-killer that just entered the US market.

I signed up on their email list for an invite.

I figured it would be a looong time before I got the invite in but it came yesterday.

Anyone else get one?

I probably will not do much with this, but if I have the ability to get you all in I'll do it just for that.

Yep - I'm in.

Like ML I signed up on their site. It was around a week before my invite arrived. Just go sign up. If I had invites I'd share.. but they don't seem to giving invites to pass out to us mere mortals - at least at the moment

i signed up for the invite. But, it doesn't seem like it's all that special. 2 of the things I like about Pandora are the ability to use my iPhone and the randomness of the playlists. It looks like Spotify wants to only allow the mobile streaming if you pay and I don't see if it's possible for it to autopick music for you or just uses specific songs off your playlist. I see a "recommendations" option. But, does that just recommend or play?

i buy $200+ of music each month... $0.00-9.99 isn't such a bad price to find and test-drive music i'd otherwise never find or have to buy to figure out if i liked it or not.

if i like it, i buy it.

here's the free~premium comparison:

http://www.spotify.com/us/get-spotify/free/ (http://www.spotify.com/us/get-spotify/free/)

if you don't need the offline player or need to put your "temporary" music on a mobile device, and you can deal w/ occasional ads, the free version is just fine. $4.99/mo for no ads and the world's music at your fingertips? not a bad deal at all.

if they ever raise the subscription rate, i'll do what i did w/ netflix and simply reduce my level of service (or cancel). i'll still have all the music i've decided to buy.

You know if he said we are foolish to spend money on music and not get anything like a CD or MP3 in return, he'd have a point.  Or that the recording industry is pushing us to a service model, as opposed to a license model, and that's a bad thing, I would also buy that.  Instead he's saying this cheap, convenient service is bad because it might be slightly less cheap some time in the future, and by then we're hooked.  The same argument could be made against XM radio, cable TV, movie tickets, for which people happily shell out money and get no copy of the song, movie, show etc in return.

This is XM radio over the internet, except you don't need special equipment, and you get to decide exactly what you want to listen to.  Also, it's free.  This checks all the Awesome boxes for me.

Awesome boxes all check for me.  I've been using the free version for about a week, and sprung for the paid version on my Droid yesterday, so freakin' sweet.  Not only is all of your purchased (or pirated) music on your itunes account available even when your phone is offline (saved to internal phone storage), but you can build new playlists that are also available offline also.  Basically every time you walk into your wifi network, it automatically updates what you're listening to.  I have about a dozen facebook friends so far that are using it also, and you can see all of their playlists, their most listened to tracks, as well as THEIR friends' playlist that they enjoy listening to.  All in all, for $9 a month I'm definitely going to get my money's worth.   My itunes habit is about $30/month and that necessity just went away entirely, for a third of the price I have unlimited tunes, as opposed to just 30 songs.

By the way, if you want to try it for free, just go to spotify.com and fill in the your email address for a invite to the free version.  This has ads during playback, and isn't available on your mobile phone, but it's a good way to get used to the interface (which is basically like itunes, but you can listen to whatever you want!).  Seriously, it makes me feel like I have an unlimited itunes gift card!
