Title: Valentine One ... where do I mount ?
Post by: S21FOLGORE on July 17, 2011, 02:15:06 PM
I know a lot of people mount their radar detector on the handle bar mount, windscreen, on top of the steering stem.
While I understand that (from the detector's performance point of view) it should be mounted as high & far forward as possible, I want a bit more discreet set up.
Unfortunately, Monster doesn't offer much places to hide V-1. So, I'm thinking, either

1) under the lower triple
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/IMG_9242.jpg)
(never mind V-1 facing backward. I can be silly sometimes.)

2) right hand side of the frame
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/IMG_9245.jpg)
As for the remote display ...
1) here
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/IMG_9240.jpg)

2) or  here
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/IMG_9241.jpg)

I am also thinking about changing head light, so I may be able to stuff everything in the stock head light location
1) with two eyes ?
1) or one eyed ?
any input?

Although I haven't mounted one on my bike, I'm pretty familiar with the V1 setup and I'd be worried about mounting it so low because 1) road debris which could damage that $400 piece of hardware, and 2) the higher it's mounted the better it'll work. I'd try to find a nice suction mount for the windscreen, or find a nice suction and fab up some kind of mount that'll work.

what would happen to that if it got wet?

Not much use having a discreet detector if it doesn't work as well.  My V1 sits on a homemade backet bolted to the clutch side mirror hole.  I use the remote up front with a Mac Parnes LED warning block glued on top.  I also use a fairing to protect it all, with a Really Right Stuff QR block to remove it from the bike.

dont forget that if you ever go on trips, some states make it illegal to own a detector, so it would need to be removed ompletely for you to pass through.

Yes, they are.

Yes. The more I thought about all the beating V-1 would take, the more I feel like I should stay away from under the triple mount ...

The windscreen (and fairing, too) is so flimsy ... I can't mount on it.

Indeed. So, I guess i am going to either
1)on the (unused) left mirror hole, Techmount sells the mounting kit. (= easy).
2)on the right side of the frame (2nd & 3rd picture), right above ohlins reservoir.
3)Middle of the handle bar. Techmount sells this mount, also.

Re: trail tech hid lights.

Not intending to threadjack, however there are some quirks you should know about those lights that may be of safety concern if you ride at night.

The ballasts in those lights are notoriously sensitive to voltage; in my experience with multiple sets of these lights, the ballasts tend to fail when there is a low voltage condition such as starting your bike with the lights on, at least with the mr11's.  The mr16, variety seem to me more tolerant, however they frequently fail to relight unless power is cycled.  I don't have experience with the larger models, so I can't speak for those.

The trail techs are awesomly bright after 20-30 second of warm up time, however I would never use them as a primary light on the street.  I would definitely buy trail techs again, however I would always consider the possibility of the failure modes above in their use.  Hope you find this helpful!

End threadjack!

I'm jealous.

Its illegal to even own a radar detector where I live... even if it doesn't work.

damn authority!

OK, so (after a lot of research and rethinking) I've changed my plan. V-1 is going to be mounted on either

1) handlebar center
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/RDmount-5.jpg)

These are the pic of GPS mount, but you get the idea. I'll use Techmount with 3" extension bar, or RAM mount.
In this location (it would be mounted higher than GPS in these photos), the antenna gets better "view". easy to cover up when getting caught in the unexpected rain or when get pulled over ( just take off the helmet and put it over the V-1).

2) Handle bar right side ( or left )

Probably works just as well (or could be better) as 1) option.

3)right next to the headlight
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/RDmount-3.jpg)

I need to cut out the fairing (or just give up laser protection.)

4)right side of the frame
(http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o420/ZX750E2/IMG_9245.jpg)

1) & 2), I can simply purchase RAM or Techmount. 3) &4) requires fabricating mount.

I'm leaning toward 1) option. What do you guys think ?

And about the head light ...

I was aware of this. So, my solution is that I'm going to put a on/off switch (somewhere hidden), when ignition is turned on, the light is off. After starting the engine, I'd turn on the light. What do you think?

I used to roll that way on my ATV, I still forgot to kill power to the lights before restarting at times.  In hindsight, I should have added a relay with normally closed contacts (coil voltage picked up off of the starter button signal) to cut power to the lights for me.  Not sure on the older monsters, but the new monsters already have this function (cutting headlight power when starting), if yours already does this then you probably don't need to worry about it.

So, here is how I mounted mine, in the end.
Using RAM mount, V-1 is on the left hand side of the handle bar (right above the clutch reservoir), remote audio control and concealed display are mounted inside of the fairing.

The power was taken from license lamp ( I lost it last summer, so it was unused. Here's what happened to my license plate and light

V-1's direct wiring kit.

Wire runs right side of the bike ...
