I purchased a horribly maintained '07 695 with 13k.
These items are complete:
Clean/lube chain
(so nasty it took forever)
Change oil and filter
(super dark black)
Change brake/clutch fluid
(I thought the clutch was going, nope the fluid was disgusting)
Change worn brakes
Adjust chain tension
(Surprisingly it was not that far off)
Threw in a beer tray eliminator
Next:
Spark plugs
K&N Air Filter
Then ????
[beer]
Since most of the other basics weren't done in a while, I'd check the tires too. I might be safe to assume that they are the OEM tires, if that's the case most recommend new rubber after 4 years.
Hows the wear on the chain/sprockets?
May need new belts too.
Valve clearances?
Change the belts on pure principle given the other clues as to how poorly the bike was serviced
Might as well throw in a new fuel filter for peace of mind...
oh yeah.
the tires were so bare the rear had metal all the way around.
(ps a monster fits in the back of an element.)
chain/sprockets good check.
gonna skip the valve clearances until it goes into winter hibernation.
fuel filter good call. missed that one.
and belts.
thanks responders.
+1 to the belts. I'm sure they need to be done.
Add a does of Sea Foam, BG44k or Techron in the next tank of gas or two sure won't hurt.
Fork oil could probably go for a replace.
Unless you're planning to do something to add fuel - DP ECU, Power Commander etc - do not go to the K&N or similar filter. Filters like that flow more air, consequently you need to adjust the Fuel/Air mix more than the stock ECU can handle. Just installing the filter will cause your bike to run lean, and all the problems that come with it.
yeah i was going to adjust the mix after the air filter.
sea foam was done on the first tank as well.
okay, never looked into fork oil before. that is another on the to do list.
Unless you open up the exhaust as well, the K+N air filter won't change your fueling enough to worry about.
okay, so the 'Maint' signal came on this afternoon. It came on when I first started the bike and went off shortly after.
What is that all about?
Pre-programmed reminder at 6,000 miles from the last time it was serviced the previous owner figured out how to turn that signal off.
It's telling you you need a valve service/new belts, but just based on mileage.
Is this a new development? Or did it do this when you went to buy/pick up the bike?
brand new development.
rode 3-4 times similar distance/temperature/conditions.
well all the fluids are new this time around.
i was hoping it was an automatic thing.
how do i turn it off?
