If you intended to have a passenger regularly or do touring with it, that is what a buyer would be concerned about- not that its top speed is 3 mph slower than a 796...
Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Post by: stopintime on July 25, 2011, 09:06:22 AM If you check Gearing Commander, you'll see that they list max rpm different from what's the reality - AFAIK
696 at 9,000 rpm 796 at 8,250 rpm 1100 at 7,500 rpm So, besides the wrong input - this is theoretical numbers that will be different when wind resistance stops a weaker bike sooner than it stops a stronger bike. I never feel wanting for a larger motor... well when that freaking Ninja took off on me I did, but not sure even the 1100 would have made a difference. Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Post by: Bishamon on July 26, 2011, 04:51:43 AM better gas mileage, lower seat height, cheaper insurance, those are the first things that came to mind. Not to mention the 796 is a better city bike. I chose the 796 over the 1100 because I already have a Sport 1000, and it can be frustrating riding in traffic - either lugging in second gear or holding it in first. Sure, a sprocket change could help, but the 796 seems much happier without the need for modification. Since I almost never ride on the highway, I didn't see the need for more power. I have ridden the 1100evo as well, and while it wasn't available when I picked up the 796, I still would have chosen the same because it honestly didn't feel very different (and it didn't sound as nice with the stock exhaust, IMO). It probably helps that I only weigh 130lbs at most. Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Post by: dennisd on July 26, 2011, 12:35:44 PM "wins" ???
If your only definition of winning is top speed you shouldn't be riding a monster anyway. A more appropriate bike would be a streetfighter or superbike. I seldom ride my M1100 over 80 to 90 but what fun getting there. I have LOT'S more fun riding at 45 to 50 on twisties than 100+ straight. But that's just my opinion... Theoretical "winning" on the stat sheet is of little relevance IMO. 696, 796, 1100..... any Monster... the fun is right here >> [Dolph] Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Post by: jsd2 on July 26, 2011, 06:44:44 PM I had a 696 but I wanted to get a new Monster. I thought of the 796 but then the EVO came out. I wanted ABS and the EVO is $1000 more than the 796 with ABS. For the extra grand I get the 1100 motor, more adjustable suspension, and traction control. I also really like the look and I think when some new pipes start coming out it will even look better. It fits me better and is more comfortable for me than the 696 because I am tall with long legs and arms. To me all this was worth an extra $1000. I will probably never (actually most definitely) see the top speed of any of these bikes so that is a non-issue. So for me the EVO wins.

Post by: Duc796canada on July 27, 2011, 09:12:59 PM You know what, other than comparing d*ck sizes, how many of you here has had the monster up to 120 MPH? In theory it can do 125 MPH, I wanna know who has or consistently does that speed on the Monster? [clap]
Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Post by: jvax on July 27, 2011, 11:09:06 PM I did 115mph on the 796 twice. Couldn't take the wind for more than a minute both times. I don't think those speeds are reasonable on a monster, so for me, top speed comparison of the monsters is pointless. Torque on the other hand, the difference between the 796 and the 1100 is definitely big, but 796 was way more than I could use in the city and twisties at my skill level, so I took the 796. The 1100 will have a higher top speed.

I don't know where it would have topped out, but it felt like there was plenty more. I also rode the 796 Hyper that day. I didn't really have a chance to open it up with the 796, but it I seriously doubt any 796 has the same top speed or quarter mile as any 1100 Ducati. You can't really compare tests given on different days. Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? [clap] we did on an annual Ducati trip when we saw the sign "28 miles to Leaky" and off everyone went. I saw 132 on my speedo and hated the buffeting so back to settle in at 100 mph. I hated it but we got there fast. [evil]Title: Re: Monster 696/796/1100/ MPH 796 wins? Just today I hit 130 and still had about 1000K left on the rev limiter. My redline is raised to the DP ECU spec though.. 9500. I only slowed down because I ran out of road. Granted I dropped about 20 pounds off my bike and weigh 150lbs but still... *What's with all this complaining about wind and shit?
