Title: Sealing Intake Manifold Air Leak
Post by: akmnstr on July 27, 2011, 05:59:17 AM
I've put in a new used engine in my old monster and have been working out several bugs.  I got it running last weekend but it backfired badly.  I traced the problem down to leak through the connection between the vertical head and the intake manifold.  The source of this problem is my attempting to get by with used gaskets.  I will order new ones today.  My question to the forum is can I use a gasket sealant on the gasket to ensure that I will have no future leaks?  If yes, what kind do you recommend?  I think heat would be an issue with the sealant.

I've used ThreeBond 1194 in that application, worked fine.

I use it for sidecovers, centercases, etc.

Thanks Speeddog.  I've used ThreeBond or the equivalent for years.  I was concerned that the heat from the head would be a problem, but base on you testimony I will use with the new gaskets.

The threebond that Nick mentions is good stuff, but I always liked something that doesn't get as hard for something like that.

Yamaha used to have a Yamabond product that was non hardening...kind of like silicone...that was recommended for joints that you wanted to come apart with out force.

After recently having to hammer some valve covers off a 996...not mine... I'd consider something less aggressive.
