Title: Boot "emergency" - need a local source
Post by: Artful on July 28, 2011, 09:46:57 AM
So I had my B2s resoled and all was going well. Now that I've got some seat time on them and have worn them around the office a bit the adhesive used just isn't holding up as well as I would have liked.

I leave for TN on Tuesday and only have a bit of free time until then. I want to pick up a new set of boots in that time frame but don't want to pay through the nose if I can avoid it. Anyone know a good source for gear that carries the higher end stuff but is at least competitive with online resellers? I don't buy stuff sight unseen if it relates to fit. I also have moral issues with trying something on locally then ordering it online.

I'll probably swing by Thief's.... ahem PETE'S Cycle and Bob's BMW today.

Bob's isn't bad as far as selection/inventory, but they are less inclined to bargain

no sure what Cycle World carries, if anything, anymore....

if you feel like traveling, I know Coleman's in FC has Sidi in stock and if you are reasonable in your haggling, they are seemingly likely to cut you some kind of break...

Colemans, if you ask, will match price online. But, in store and online retail prices are about same same on current Sidi items.

What Sidi's did you end up going with Panda? Vertigos or Vortices?

STs

The ST is the replacement for the Vertigo. Lots of the protective gizzys of the Vortice, but not so fussy to get into or out of.

What's your foot size? I have a pair of Tecnic Boots (size 9 I think) you can borrow.

I have a size 45 Vertigo you can try on and order overnight to soothe your conscience about saving a few dollars.

Standard shipping from Revzilla would make here in time for your trip. The best local source that has anything is stock would be Bob's but as you know, you'll pay for it.. [roll]. Heck give Speed's a try, they may have some old new stock.

Lol it's ok twinkle toes, size doesn't matter... at least that's what Colleen keeps telling me.

45 is actually my exact size, but I'm going to be trying them on at Bob's since they have them in stock. Their prices match all the online retailers as well so my "buy local" sensibilities will be satisfied if they fit nicely. Plus next day shipping will eat any savings I could find. Thanks for the offer.

I was actually surprised, Bob's Sidi pricing matches everyone else, Sidi must be very tight on their resellers to "toe" the line (see what I did there... sigh long day already).

I checked Revzilla, same Sidi pricing though they do carry Astars which I've been tempted to try. Don't see any real advantage over Sidi and I've been thrilled with my B2s for two years. I kinda hate the thought of getting rid of them.

Speeds? make the beast with two backs Speeds  [laugh]. I tried for years to find anything redeemable about that place, and other than Speed and Joe being nice guys to have a beer with the shop is worthless. I could write one hell of a rant of all the times they've dropped the ball.

Join the crowd - me too. We can share shoes!  [puke]

venomousr1993 isn't such a big fan of A* after his off. Very poor toe protection in his opinion.

Yeah, it seems that Sidi is very tight on pricing. I've never seen more that a handful of dollars difference between any vendors

But... he had his FEET in them...  [puke]

Lol thanks for the link, but gear is one thing I don't buy used. Plus I can't really talk, my feet could knock a buzzard off a shit wagon.

The S-MX R are very nice and compete with the Vertigo's price-wise. Wouldn't blame you for buying those. The Sidi's are heavier but due to more hard plastic schtuff... which translates to better protection in my mind. Sizing was identical for my paws.

ditto what you said about Speeds but I figured as long as it didn't involve a wrench they couldn't make the beast with two backs too much up.  [laugh]

Or a parts order... or an oil filter purchase... or meeting a deadline... or helping diagnose a problem... [laugh]

I'm the proud owner of a new pair of Vertigos. Damn nice boots and fit right nice. And would you know that by ribbing the salesperson about Bob's not being willing to bargain I got $20 off? :)

MFI is usually competitive with on-line places for pricing, but their selection is hit or miss, sometimes its great, sometimes not - I suspect that it depends on who is doing the ordering that month or whatever. They always have a good stock of Arai lids so there's that.

I second MFI...was over there looking at their Husa SM and they seemed to have a decent inventory of boots at a fair price.  Then again I wasn't boot shopping at the time.

And as stated before, I will not buy the A* SMX boots ever again.  The toe box offers little to no protection and shredded pretty bad imo...additionally the heel protection is marginal.  I will pay for it, but will look at another boot with better protection

I've got some of those as well.  Or at least did before I moved.  Might just use one for that new helmet I've been looking at...
