Title: Stripped kickstand bolt advice needed.
Post by: tbyte on July 28, 2011, 11:05:22 AM
My kickstand will not hold a bolt.  I was getting some bite with a M10 1.5 pitch bolt but now I have to push it back in at every stop.  I intend to repair it with a time-sert (http://hoerr-racing-products.amazonwebstore.com/TimeSert-M10x1.5-Metric-Insert-Kit-with/M/B001JK448O.htm) kit per recommendations of others on this forum. My questions are:

1.   Can anyone confirm that the M10 1.5 pitch bolt is the correct/stock size for a 2000 750M?
2.   I measured the depth of bolt hole at 1”/ 25.4mm.  The above linked kit includes 14mm inserts.  Is that sufficient or must it be the full depth for proper repair?   I am a bit nervous about drilling into oil pan.
Thanks in advance.

M10x1.5 sounds about right, but  I'm not at home so I can't be sure.  It should be the same thread pitch as the bolts for your rear sets as well (though the kickstand bolts are longer, IIRC).  If you've got a tap & die kit already, you can use the die to test the diameter and thread pitch, just don't force it if it doesn't feel like it's moving.

When you're repairing the thread, you should only go as deep as the existing bolt hole.  Drilling out the threads will be minimal resistance until you hit the bottom of the bolt hole.  That extra resistance is a good sign that you should stop. The tap that you are using isn't a drill bit, so it'll hit the bottom of the hole and stop there... don't force it to go any farther than it wants to go or you risk mucking up the new threads you just created.

As for getting the full depth repaired... I'm inclined to say (but am not entirely sure on this) that a single thread insert would hold.  However, the right way to do it is to cover the full bolt hole length - it shouldn't be too particularly difficult to add a second insert as well and get full coverage; the process is essentially adding a second insert after you've done the first insert and then using the tool to snap off the tang (the cross-piece on the coil).  Check your specific tools for instructions, but there should be a part of the tool that you insert while tapping/hitting the other side with a hammer to break off the tang.

make sure you check the length of the bolt you are using.

i did a stupid. there are two lengths of bolts. i used a short one for the kickstand originally when i should have used a long one. there werem't enough threads grabbing.

Thank you for the replies.  They are helpful.  A tap and die set has been on the wish list for some time but I have never found it a necessity.   The extra $1.60 for the longer insert will not break me and I will order it today.  Next week, Blunder Ho!

The kickstand bolts are indeed M10x1.5.

You may not be able to run the tap (for the insert) deep enough to use a longer insert.

I've done several of these, the 14mm length inserts work fine.
