Title: Mystery gauge light
Post by: zarn02 on July 29, 2011, 10:34:01 PM
The superbike dash features indicators for fuel, turn signals, neutral, high-beam, and... something.

Having no idea what the idiot light means leaves 'ol Zarn feeling like he's not the brightest bulb in the box.

It's never come on, but should that happen I'd love to know what it was trying to tell me. Both the 998 and 996 owner manuals left me in the dark as to its purpose. Can anyone here illuminate me on the topic?

(Sorry. Not feeling clever tonight and couldn't think of more places to slot in references to light and darkness.)

The red one on mine is the oil pressure.

The small light on the tach comes on for oil pressure.

Ducati used the same warning pod for several models.

The red light is used for oil pressure on ST's and not used on SS and SBK models.

Fair enough. Thanks for the enlightenment.

I have a 2004 998 with the same gauge light.  I am going to put a manual fan control switch on and would like to use that light as an indicator.  Does anyone know how I can access that light?  Do I need to power it, ground it or both?

The fans are powered all the time so it would be great to have an indictor light to help prevent the dead battery from leaving the fans on.  Also since the intent is to turn the fans on anytime I have to slow down for traffic the light would serve as a reminder to turn the fans back off when I'm on the open road.
Is there even a socket and bulb in there?

I'd have to look at a wiring diagram...

and hope there is even a mention of that unused lamp.

I would if I had a wiring diagram (assuming the pin number is correct and the wiring diagram is accurate).  I think it wouldn't be too difficult to sort out if you took the cluster apart and attacked it with an ohmmeter.

Do you know a specific year and model that used that light for low oil?  If so that's all I really need to get where I'm going.

I was just hoping somebody like Howie would just give me the pin number on the connector and tell me to add + or -.
All ST's, as far as I know, used that lamp for oil warning.

That light is Turbo Boost. Is yours not working?

That fulfills my smart-ass quota for the evening.

Well hey! My thread found a new life!

As I may at some point install a manual fan switch, given the amount of city riding I do, I really like this idea.

When you suss out how to properly set this up please post directions, because I'm lazy and stupid and therefore might not ever figure it out myself. [cheeky] [thumbsup]

C-14 -
Please send the directions to me too, once you've figured them out.  748 in AZ gets mighty hot at the stoplights.
Thanks

Charging light?
Is it shining when just ignition is turned on?

And, is there a working bulb in there.....?
