Title: anyone know this bike or seller?
Post by: teddy037.3 on August 03, 2011, 06:37:12 PM
2006 multistrada 620
http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/mcy/2517254716.html (http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/mcy/2517254716.html)

I suppose this could have gone in the CL thread, but I figured this would garner more traffic.

:edit: blarg.  bailed on this one.  :(

hmmm.

jim is the 2nd owner, 29k miles, unknown service history, only one (black) key

tags expired in june and he has the title.

assuming the bike is in otherwise good kit, what should I pitch? 3?

2006 with immobilizer and just one black key? 29,000 miles and no service history? I'd say $2k, $2.5K tops. It's not the miles. Heck, the guy that bought my old Monster has 28.5K on in now. It's that key thing and you just know it's in need of at least $500.00 maintenance just to bring it up to snuff. My $0.02.

BTW, nice to see you interested in getting back to riding.  [thumbsup]  The back must be feeling better..

Post by: teddy037.3 on August 04, 2011, 10:29:08 AM
yeah, my main concern is the key/service thing. I'm assuming it'll need new cam belts right off the bat.

also curious about why he let safety lapse.

I do miss being on a bike. back's not 100%, and I doubt it ever will be, which is why I'm looking at a multi vs. another monster

As long as you are looking at something along the lines of a Multistrada I can highly recommend something like this, although not a Duc.

You could make a lowball offer. You never can tell what might work. Our shop did that twice and we now have two bikes to show for it. These models don't have the normal BMW super high saddle height but it still might stretch you a bit. I think it's comparable to the Multi. You are always welcome to come by the shop and see how it fits you.

haven't bought anything yet, I'm still ironing out the details.

Not anything that I personally own but if push comes to shove I can score a truck & a trailer.  If Anne has these things then I can contribute a body. For what it's worth.  ;D

Or you could just ride dirty back to your place and I could give you a ride over to get it.  ;D

blarg.

this is getting complicated.  http://www1.honolulu.gov/csd/vehicle/mvtransfers.htm (http://www1.honolulu.gov/csd/vehicle/mvtransfers.htm) seems to require a lot of things jim does not possess.

title is out of state, which is the only thing he has.

still keen on seeing if I can make this work, but I've never had to deal with this kind of stuff before. any help? am I needlessly getting worked up over this?

So he doesn't have the registration?  Everything else seems pretty easy.

OK. No Hawaii state registration or Hawaii title. Only out of state Title?

My recommendation...... Get a photo copy of the title and then go to DMV or Satellite City Hall and ask them if this can be done and how it can be done. This absolutely must be done before any money is commited. If there is any problem, any problem at all then stop right there and back away.

correct.

jim said he was already talking to someone at the wahiawa satellite, that he needs to get the bike weighed and someone to verify to vin to the vin on the title (maybe they'll generate some kind of notarized letter saying it's legit?).  supposed to be taking care of that this week.

He might also have to provide some sort of proof concerning the bikes arrival in the islands, i.e., shipping papers, or something.

Easier to force him to get Hawaii paperwork in his name, then do the transfer.  There's two places to get weighed, and the Hawaii inspection should verify the VIN.

I bought a boat once that had belonged to a gulf war rocket jockey who was KIA.  He had sold the boat before he left but the intermediate owner had not registered the trailer.  It wasn't possible for me to do it, period, the end.

ideally, that would've been the case... I was trying to press him on that over the weekend.  I still want to call the city hall/dmv myself anyway, just to see what all is needed. I just didn't get to it today.

is it possible that the problem you ran into was a result of the deceased owner?  I was able to contact the original (out of state) owner, and she's got paperwork to fill out on her side to send back here

Post by: teddy037.3 on August 09, 2011, 08:04:00 AM
the way this is potentially shaping up, I don't have a problem paying the penalties... as long as it's double digits, I guess.  for once, I'm happy that this place is so small.  turns out I knew who the original owner was, so we've been emailing the past few days and I have alot more details on the bike, as well as probably recovering the red key.

Title: Re: anyone know this bike or seller?
Post by: whackie on August 11, 2011, 02:00:02 AM
hope you get things sorted out. hawaii has crazy paperwork. it was a nightmare buying a bike from out of state, talk about the run around. it was a whole process of playing tag with different state depts.

Title: Re: anyone know this bike or seller?
Post by: DRKWNG on August 11, 2011, 02:15:17 AM
Buying one used from out of state (SC) wasn't that bad, simply because the bike was already titled and what not.  Buying on new from out of state (SD) on the other hand...  I really got the feeling that the DMV down there didn't realize that you could actually buy a vehicle from somewhere else...

this kettle of fish is a little more... exciting... than just buying out of state.

short story -> long, as best I connected the dots so far:

Sam, the OG, brought the bike from WA while she was at school (UH-M).
falls of kickstand, cracks case (I think the left cover?), bleeds oil all over.  too broke to fix it.
graduates, packing up to move back, puts bike on CL as "parts bike."

Jim buys bike,  Sam signs off the WA title
he eventually fixes it, starts looking to title it in HI. had been talking to someone at the Wahiawa satellite, and sends Sam paperwork to fill out ("vehicle arrival certification" is what he mentioned by name to me, idk what else was sent to her) but it apparently was incomplete.
Jim puts up bike on CL

enter Teddy.  looked at the bike on saturday, Jim says he will get the bike weighed 'this week'

email inquiry to the gov't gets a response, telling me that I need the signed off title, Bill of Lading, insurance/safety, the scale weight of the bike and checked by MVC (motor vehicle.... C? beats me... ).  pay penalties for the gap in reg, and all will be well.

today- bike still hasn't been weighed, waiting on Sam to fill out paperwork again and mail (I suppose it should go to me, not Jim).

debating on using Jim's "too busy right now" as a bargaining chip to drop my offered price, and find a way to get the bike from him and take care of everything myself.

i figured it would be more exciting, esp since that bill of lading will be a pregnant dog to get. that's what they will be looking for to find out when it actually arrived, and when you owe reg from. i'm thinking the mvc is the recon guy.

I'm thinking it might not be worth it. If the state is going to try and charge for the gap in registration, based on when the bike arrived on island as stated on the bill of lading... Did Sam not have the bike registered there?

I'm not sure if she did or not; gotta ask.... the website says that either the bill of lading or out-of-state vehicle permit is required to transfer the title to HI

If it was registered here it would have Hawaii tags or an out of state permit. If it has a plate from somewhere else & no out of state vehicle permit (the big blue sticker) then it was never registered here. MVC is the recon guys up at the top of Kapahulu. The best you could hope for was that it was registered here and when it went out of service the plates were surrendered because the vehicle was being stored and then there would be no penalty registration fees. Of course you could always get as much paperwork as possible and go into DMV during the middle of the month and try to sweet talk them as much as possible.

potentially 3 years worth of penalty fees? no thank you

Title: Re: anyone know this bike or seller?
Post by: teddy037.3 on August 12, 2011, 03:08:01 PM
That's only $300 plus the actual penalty.  It's the repair work I'd be worried about.  Plenty bikes on CL over time.  Be patient.  I spent 4 months looking before I bought the monster.

if the cracked/leaking bit was only the side cover, it has been fixed. the only other damage on the bike was a bit of rash on the left barend and the clutch lever, which is bent a little.

bike needs tires, 30k service, new belts. otherwise it's in decent shape.

:edit: "too broke to fix it" meant she had no money; not the bike being broken...
