I worked on a 2007 Sport 1000 this weekend and for some reason the bike wouldn't idle at all. It would run, and actually ran well above idle, but it would not idle at all except when dead cold, when it idled rather eratically.
I suspected the stepper motor, but it pitched no codes. Is there any way to test its function without replacing it for over $1000 US (list)?
Any thoughts on other possibilities? I know several folks have complained about issues with ECUs on this bike, but I can't imagine that would send it from "idles well" to "won't idle at all" instantaneously.
Bump. HELP!!!!!!
Could this be one of those times when a fella should ignore the manual and remove the yellow paint that keeps one from meddling with the idle stop screw? Just sayin'!
Meddling with the stop screw can work as an emergency procedure so you can ride, particularly if you have the capability of resetting TPS. As far as testing the stepper motor without a scan tool, well, on a Duc, I'm not sure. Maybe see what the stepper motor does if you mess with the signal fron the cylinder temp sensor?
I was having similar problems, and I remember He Man saying he was having issues during his trip to the south, so I PM'ed him a while ago. His response:

New oil, new plugs and cleaned airfilter solved the issue for me.
So I did this stuff, and my bike runs much happier.
YMMV.

Got the scan tool (Centurion Pro Europe). It pitches no codes. There is a test for the stepper in the software that has the stepper run upward from idle and back down, but since the bike won't idle the test is inconclusive. I've reset the TPS twice, though it showed correct on initial hookup. The stepper is supposed to work primarily off of the temp sensor, so I suspected the temp sensor, but it shows correct on the software and on the gauge cluster, so I think it's OK, too.
I'm fairly lost. I cleaned the throttle bodies in a desperate grab at anything. I think I'll replace the plugs, too, for giggles, but since it's a customer's bike I'd like to have some idea as to what's really going on rather than pitch junk at it to see what sticks. I really expected a diagnostic code when I hooked up, as few mechanical things explain what I'm seeing on this bike....and I've looked at them.
Thanks for the ideas, though. Any others?

All I can think of is, if possible, look for a change in the air bypass opening in the stepper motor between key on and key off or change by altering the resistance from the temp sensor. From reading your posts in general I think this problem qualifies for "stump the stars". I also assume you checked all the basic stuff like vacuum leaks.
Yeah, I checked for 'em....at least visually.
When I cleaned the throttle bodies there was a fair amount of gummy crud in there. I wonder if that crap could be fouling the stepper, too?
Anybody ever pulled one apart?
