Title: 696 Clutch wont engage after removing slave cylinder. Need help!
Post by: DoWorkSon on August 08, 2011, 03:46:17 PM
I removed the clutch slave cylinder today while removing the front sprocket.

After I was done, I placed cylinder back on, and all seemed well.

Now, bike's clutch will not engage. I can shift up/down, but pulling the lever wont engage the clutch and nothing happens.... Bike just rolls regardless of what gear it is in.

I checked and rechecked the push rod and it seems to go in fine, but I am not sure how far it is supposed to stick out. It is in all the way, and is sticking out of the case about 2" or so.

Now, the clutch lever is extremely stiff.

Any ideas???

Bike worked fine this morning, so it had to have been something that was done during the removal/install

Bleed it. Same thing happened to my wifes S2R. I bled the line and all was good.  [thumbsup]

Weird.

I'd bleed it for sure.

I changed my front sprocket last week and jumped right on the bike and took off. Thankfully my clutch worked.

How long was the slave off for? I had mine hanging (pretty high on the bike) for about 5 minutes while I swapped the sprocket.

It was hanging down for a bit of time... Probably 2 hours or so

Bike pops into gear and rear wheel locks up(like normal) when the cylinder is off..

But when cylinder is on the bike and tightened down, rear wheel moved freely even if it is still in gear(almost as though clutch lever is being pulled and clutched is engaged).

Is the clutch cylinder stuck in the engaged position?

I would guess air in the lines.

After sitting for that long some could have squeezed in there.

Did you pull the clutch rod out with the slave cylinder?  If so, check to make sure it's fully seated in the pressure plate.

Air will cause the opposite problem, failure of the clutch to disengage.  Make sure the pushrod is seated properly and not bent.

When I removed the cylinder, the rod only came out a little bit, but not fully. It's definitely not bent, and it's straight. It appears to go in the full distance that is supposed to. Nothing would have causes it to bend. Ive been wiggling and messing with it hoping it would was not seating correctly, but that doesnt seem to be the case.

I think it's the cylinder. Initially the levee pull was normal, if not a tad slight soft. After playing with it, it stiffened up(that's what she said) and now the lever is hard to pull.

Also, bike pops into gear and clutch catches when cylinder is off, but not when it's on. Almost like the cylinder is stuck in the "enaged" position...

I'm gonna start with bleeding it, see if that does the trick.

You managed to get the slave cylinder filled with too much fluid, and it's not flowing back into the reservoir.  Bleed the system.
