Well. I posted in the other monster forum and figured I'd try here as well. I cranked my bike this morning and the check engine light was glowing. Come to find out my headlamp and plate light were out. Found a 15 amp fuse that was blown and replaced it. Well rode around a good bit and it was fine, but then riding later in the night I flipped on my high beams and then cut them off, and then there goes the light again. Another blown fuse. I put in another and then tried riding with High beams again and them blew another. I was able to blow a fourth by turning the bike on and off. seemed the surge of juice on startup caused that one.
Well only other thing I figured I'd try before taking it to the dealer is to replace the 15amp with a 20 to see if it will hold. Only electrical mods i've made is to install the evotech tail tidy that has the led plate light. Any electrical people out there know if that could be the cause? it didn't require any radical wiring just plugged the old wires right into the new led.
I'm wondering if my dealer is gonna refuse warranty work becuase of that lamp being replaced with an led.
anyway please chime in if you have any info that may help. or have suffered a similar situation.
found another thread with similar circumstance. I'm gonna take off the tail tidy and check those wires to the plate lamp.
Never replace with a higher amp fuse!
I put the 15 back in. I also cut off those flimsy paddle connectors and put on bullets. Then shrink wrapped both and the electrical taped them as well for good measure. we'll see if that 15 amp can hold up tomorrow.

I had a similar issue last riding season on my 2009 696.
The headlight fuse kept blowing. I replaced the 15 amp fuse (several times) but a few miles later the fuse would blow again.
I ended up tracing the wires on the left side of the bike, electrical running to the tail end most likely, and found a wire resting on top of the engine that had melted through to the bare wire.
I wrapped electrical tape around the bare part that was showing and got some fancy red zip ties (to match the trellis frame) and pulled back the wire that was resting on top of the engine....
I haven't had a problem since!

Can you tell me exactly where this wire was? I'm having the same issue with my M1100EVO and wanted to get an idea of where i should look. Under the tank? Thank you.
Had a similar issue with my 696 when I replaced the tail. The issue ended up being how the cables were routed, i.e. what they were resting on. Once I re-routed the problem went away.
I don't have time to check now but a search should reveal a 696 factory recall over this same issue.

Shame on me for not following up on this, but my problem was fixed. I was getting a short due to the paddle connector coming from the plate light making contact with the tail tidy. once I shrink wrapped and taped everything up it fixed the problem...
I was just gonna suggest the same thing...my 696 did it with a wire that got pinched when I snugged up all the tail tidy fastners. Mine happend while riding, i looked down to see the check engine light, held a hand out in front...no head light...same in the back, no tails...I find it silly that the entire lighting circuit is, well, ONE circuit! IMO brakes should always be independent!!
