Title: What's this cover called?
Post by: hay13 on June 18, 2008, 09:53:16 AM
I can use some help here.
Anyone know what this cover is called at a glance?  Also, has anyone painted it?

I don't know, but I'm sure it's paintable. While your'e waiting for the correct answer you can take off the passenger footpeg assembly and have it ready for powdercoating tomorrow. Take off the footpeg itself first, that stays as it is. (IMO)  :)

Camshaft bearing cover.  Sure you can paint it, but it might mean replacing a gasket when it comes off.  I'd need to check my factory manual though

Oh yes, and I'm very happy with the look. My S2R 800 is red and I think this mod will look even better on yours.
You might even do the riders rearsets? People say the elastic bushing around the main bolt, which can't be removed, will survive the heat - check with your painter perhaps. Be sure they cover all the holes before coating. Threads might be messed up if not. Also, the brackets where the pegs are mounted will be (too) tight after coating. You can cover the insides before coating, grind it off afterwards or just assemble without using both spacers/washers (if so, be sure to use the one that holds the spring/ball). I would recommend NOT coating the break/shift footlevers, rods and couplings - probably not as easy to make everything fit afterwards - besides the black must not be overdone, that will look homemade.

Plus, you'll have to get back to us when you get around to changing the mirrors 8)

If you take it off to paint it, be careful. There are some very thin shims on the camshaft that may come out with the cover. If they do, they'll be stuck to the bearing face. Be sure not to lose them.
I've had mine apart several times and haven't needed a new gasket yet.

Thanks all - I'll post pics and what I learn when I decide to do with the cover, footpeg assembly and of course now those super tall stocker mirrors.

I was pretty clsoe on my naming.  And yep - the parts diagram shows the shim HM mentioned.  So be on your guard when you pull it off.  Based on the line drawing in the diagram it'll be a little disc or circle.

Felt like I owed you these pics stopintime.  [thumbsup]
Went with the Rizoma Class mirror.  Tried several ways of mounting them and this was the best for me so far.

Hi there,

Did you have your bike painted or you just removed the white stripe. I've often wondered if I would try it on mine.

Cheers.

Came right from the dealer like this.  No stripe.

My S2R 800 is without a stripe as well. For some reason I thought only the S2R 1000s came with stripes. Can't remember for sure.

Hmm .... stripes/no stripes  ???  '06s and '07s have them, at least on paper (Ducati brochure paper).

Could it be you have converted "darks" or that the shop repaired/repainted for some reason, before selling them?

Nah, mine's not a dark. Paint is stock. Guess the 800s did come with stripes. I haven't seen any in person. Only striped ones I saw were 1000s and s4r's
