Title: M1100 EVO w/ EvoTech fender elim
Post by: EvilSteve on August 11, 2011, 05:45:28 AM
So I spent a little time putting the evotech fender eliminator on my M1100 EVO last night. It was kind of a bit of a hack. There are walkthroughs online (videos and whatnot) but I guess the harness has changed for the EVO because the spade connectors are useless.

I basically winged it because the instructions from evotech might as well be written in Latin and I couldn't find any walkthrough for the EVO.

Main difference for the EVO is (as I mentioned) the the light that comes in the kit won't attach to the harness without chopping something. I had a couple of ideas, one was to just splice into the harness (which I don't like to do). Another was to chop the existing light, grab the connector and use that on the light from the kit. The other (and what I decided to do) was to take the stock plate mount (with the light attached) and use that. I hacked off some of the reflectors and was able to mount that up. It needs tweaking but seems to be ok. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

Looks great!  How do you like the bike?

The bike is awesome. It's my 3rd Monster. My first bike was a 2005 S2R 800. I also owned a 2007(?) S4RS although that bike had the devil.

This bike feels more powerful than the 800 (duh!) but just as light. It handles really well, better than either the S2R or the S4RS. It's very stable and confidence inspiring. I've only put ~350 miles on it though so haven't got too much else to say on it yet.

I assume one of your previous Monsters had a dry clutch.  Do you notice a big difference between the wet and dry clutch?  I have a 696 now, and am considering either the Evo or a leftover M1100.  Some people say the dry clutch is harder to handle...

that probably cause its not made for the evo. I checked in there website and they still have not post a tail chop for the evo. Im devating if waiting for ducati tail chop to do there stealth plate relocastors and marbe go with the integrated tail light. but still thinking about it. dont know what to do

I used the same kit on my Monster 1100 Evo as well. One would think, that ordering a fender eliminator from a British company, that they'd get the directions in the most proper English. Yeah. Not so much.

I did use one of the tutorial links in the Tutorials section to "translate" between the crappy instructions in the kit, and the non-Evo install process. Took me a bit, but a rather clean install.

I wouldn't bother waiting for an Evo-specific kit. This is pretty dang close. Everything bolted up to the OE locations very well (save for the LP light as the OP mentioned).

looks reaaaaal good.  is the frame black?  I have been digging on some new monsters as of late...but alas the dirt has my heart for the time.

So my bike comes in Monday and I have the EvoTech eliminator kit sitting in my living room.  How hard is it going to be to make the license plate light work?  I will get pulled over in my town without a light on my license plate.  I may or may not get a ticket but I will for sure get pulled over and it is inconvenient to get pulled over for no reason.  I think that it is important to note that I am pretty mechanically inept.  I did put the kit on my 696 without issue but it sounds like this is going to be more complicated.

My first monster was a wet clutch, second was dry. I love dry clutches - loud clutches save lives - but I wanted this bike and got it in spite of the wet clutch. I think there's a difference for sure but it's like anything, you just get used to it. The bike doesn't like to be below 3500 RPM so it's a bit stally (either that or I suck, well, probably both). I have a +2 rear sprocket on order. I think if you don't have good clutch-hand strength the dry could be a problem. If that's the only thing swaying you toward the M1100 then I'd say ditch it if you're concerned.

I think it actually wasn't that hard to attach the EvoTech but it was a bit of messing around because the instructions are pathetic (I hope they're reading this). I know there are others on the market so I'm not sure what they're thinking. I think the light attachment became super easy for me once I decided to use the stock plate holder (I'll get pics up at some point).

This leads me to another issue with this kit - the plate holder doesn't fit (unless I'm missing something, which is quite possible) US license plates. You have to use the stupid extender things which are kind of awkward. I'm going to work something out so that I don't have to do that.

If you choose to use the light that comes with the kit, the 3 options I mentioned are probably your available options, pick the one you think will be most likely to succeed. That's what I did.

I took the bike out for a ride this afternoon and didn't have any issues. I am concerned about the indicator attachment method that I used. I took the rubber mounts from the stock setup and used them as the screw holders on the inside of the mount point of the kit (yeah, I really do need some more pictures) - I feel like that could be a problem so I've ordered two more to see if I need to cut something.

I installed this kit on my EVO a couple weeks ago. I ended up drilling new holes on my license plate in order to get it to fit without using those adapters.

Funny you mentioned this. I used the adaptors though I did have my concerns about them. My concerns were well founded in that on this past Thursday I went to get on my bike after work and found that the license plate had broken off!! Fortunately the Tax Assessors office is open late on Thursdays and I got a new plate right away.

I did the same thing as you, drilled new holes.

hmmmm I might need to do that too, but I'll probably drill the old plate holder rather than the plate itself as that's illegal.  [leo]

When I got the new plate I asked the lady if drilling holes in the plate was an option; she told me that as long as the plate could be read it was no problem.

I used the plate adapter on the EvoTech kit on my 696.  I had the 696 for 2 years with no problems with the plate at all.  It doesn't look like they changed it.

Here are a few more pictures. I've since removed the extenders and drilled holes in the stock mount (and removed that last pesky reflector). These were taken with my cell phone so excuse Captain IZ_cam...

The bike looks great.  Mine was delivered to the dealer today.  If I can get out of a meeting a little early tomorrow I will be working on getting the EvoTech kit installed in less than 24 hours.  I can't wait to pick up my new bike.

Hey Steven,

You wouldn't happen to be the dude I met up at bear mountain a few weeks ago would you. I was riding the red EVO, we spoke about the eliminator for a while.

I finally got my bike on Tuesday and I installed the EvoTech fender elim kit on Wednesday (as well as a set of Rizoma Reverse Retro Bar End Mirrors).  I really like the way it cleaned up the bike.  In my opinion the removal of the stock fender is harder than the installation of the EvoTech kit.  I ended up cutting the wire on the lp light and using some connectors to hook up the light.  For the turn signal problem I pulled out the metal washer things that were installed in the rubber piece of the turn signal.  The metal washer thing lines up perfect on the back side of the turn signal and hold the bolt in no problem.  My last install was on my 696 and it didn't have the valve thing under the seat.  I was nervous to mess with it so I didn't.  After I removed all the bolts holding the fender on (from the bottom) I made a small cut in the plastic fender  and was able to remove it without unhooking anything on the valve.  It was really easy.  Obviously you can only do this if you plan on never putting the fender back on the bike.

PS  I know I have to remove the reflectors.  I will probably do it tonight.

Looks really nice. I was thinking about those mirrors too but not sure yet. They do look awesome though. The whole bike looks very clean. Your post reminds me that I need a reflectorectomy too... ;)

What kind of pipe(s) you going with?  Didn't really care for the EVO after seeing the bike at Duc S'Dale shop but it cleans up nicely with the eliminator.  Had I known about it's release, I probably wouldn't have bought my '10 1100 last year.  That bike gets HOT..especially riding in the desert.  I guess if I hadn't gone with it though..I would have continued on with a case of dry clutch envy since my 620 is a wet.  Anyway, congrats!

BTW.. I'd like to see one of those EVOs with a red or grey/titanium-colored spring.   [thumbsup]

I haven't decided on pipes yet.  Right now my plan is to keep the stock pipes until some more options are available and decide from there.  So far I have seen the Termis, Arrow, and Leo Vince offerings.  I like the idea of the Termis because you also get the ECU (which helped the performance and power delivery on my 696) but I don't love the look and I read somewhere that the kit is $1700 which seems expensive for slip-ons although you do get the ECU.  The Arrows are my favorite of the 3 in the looks department but not exactly what I was looking for.  I am hoping for a low gp style or a 2 into 1 that goes a little higher to show off more of the sss.   I will probably ride out the year and decide in the spring.

I thinking about to order the Termis Carbon. At the moment it's the best solution for the Evo. After... where more Aftermarket Pipes are in the Market, perharps I change the pipes but the DP ECU and Airfilter will stay.

I've been really happy with the volume and quality of the stock exhaust so I don't think I'll be putting anything on. I'm planning on taking the stocker off and hitting it with the hi-temp flat black just to tone it down a little. The other thing I noticed is that the damn passenger pegs foul my heels when I'm trying to get position for a corner (I don't have big feet, just keep my toes really tight on the bike on the inside) so I'm thinking about that exhaust hanger - does anyone know if that hits your heel too?

The termi system from Ducati is ~$1800 US and comes with the pipes (slip ons but that's where the catalytic converter is so really the headers are just headers plus the stupid valve), the ECU (but you can get that flashed) and an open airbox. Personally I don't think it's worth it for 1800, that's a fair chunk of change, especially when I like the sound of the stock pipe. Has anyone got a link for the Arrows?

I was thinking about those mirrors too but not sure yet.

I really like the mirrors.  I always liked the look but they seemed really small.  My friend has a Triumph branded mirror that looks exactly like the Rizoma's on his Street Triple.  I took it out to see if I would like the mirrors before I made the investment.  I was surprised how much I liked them.  They are smaller than stock but my elbows blocked most of my view with the stock mirrors.  I don't have to move my elbows at all with the Rizomas.  The also do not vibrate and they look great to boot.  They are expensive at over $100 each and you need to get bar ends to install them which I think is another $45 I think.  I am really glad I got them, in my opinion they are both good looking and functional.

I had this problem too and with the exhaust hanger it's ok now... no hits [thumbsup]

I want carbon pipes ;D
I still thinking that Termignoni are the best solution with double pipes [thumbsup]
The Arrows are not bad, but it looking too much like a japanese bike ;D

@Manutex
Cool, I'll add that to my list. I'm keeping pretty low key on my mods on what is my third monster.

Yeah, the Termis look really good, I prefer them to the arrows and the LVs by a long shot.

I removed my reflectors and am also looking at getting the Barraccuda Retro Stone mirrors, a little cheaper than the Rizoma and I like the look.
