A few weeks ago, I found my old 95' 900ss/sp.  It was my actual first "big" bike, and I kepy it for nearly 7 years.  I ended up moving a few times in college, and didn't have a garage to keep her in, so I sold her.

Now, nearly 10 years later, I bought her back.  She's rough, and needs lots of love...but I'm ready to bring her back to better than new.

I started this morning around 8, by 10:30 I had her stripped down to major components

After a break to clean up and play with the kids, I'm headed back out to degrease the motor, pull the heads/jugs and sode blast everything in prep for some new VHT engine paint.  

Problems encountered so far:

Clutch slave cylinder has a attaching bolt that is stripped keeping it firmly attached to the left side cover.  Gotta rigure out how to get that out.

Front kickstand bracket/bolt was something the guy "found" and made work....meaning I'll need to drill and timecert the hole as it was buggered up pretty bad.


My plans are simply to clean clean CLEAN this thing up.  Fresh PC on the frame/front subframe, perhaps some PC on other bits as well.

I have not decided colors yet, although I'm leaning towards a red frame with black or charcoal bodywork,  or a dark grey/gunmetal frame with red bodywork. 

Engine will be a darker grey than stock, and perhaps I'll slap on some cool old school mag side covers I found.

Questions:

The FCR's are NASTY dirty, but function wonderfully.  How can I clean the exterior of these while not screwing with the insides?

I'm thinking of going with pods, just for the clean-ness/sound.  Anyone done pods on the joined FCR's?

Any experience out there with the aftermarket bodywork?  I can't seem to find OEM stuff for sale that is "reasonable" in price.

Did pods on a Superlight, jetting was similar to the open air box I did on it previously.
It did lean things out a little more, but I had tuned on the rich side with the air box.
The bike had JE pistons, porting, Dynas, pipes.

Engine is apart, one head has been soda blasted.  I think I'm just gonna send the heads off for a valve job and cleanup, and hot-tank the jugs. 

Bonus?!?  The studs are all intact.  Not sure if they are stock or aftermarket, how would I tell?

Case has been degreased, but I havn't tackled the stripping/soda blasting just yet.  The bike is in pieces now, and after being up at 6am I'm beat.  Beer time!

Studs on the 95 M900 were stainless and fractured. Nice and shiney and hard but brittle. Ruined easi outs and cobalt drill bits trying to remove them, a job from hell. The ones you want have that dark hi tensile look.

Shiney = bad.

I was thinking of chopping off the frame in the back (after the 2 sections come together).  However, I'll then have no way to attach the tail tidy, taillight, etc.  I'll just leave it as is.  I trimmed half the pass-rearset attachment (left an attachment point for exhaust hanger) and the tabs for the crankcase breather (will be integrated into tail-tidy).


Heads go out tomorrow for re-fresh, same with cylinders.  I have to figure out if there is a way to retard timing, or scrap the JE piston idea and toss the stock slugs back in.  Bike only has ~6K miles on it, so I doubt it will be an issue.

I want the tank from the black/dark bike for my Sport1000!!

Moving the pick ups back 4mm will give you 2-3 deg retard on max advance allowing JEs. See bikeboy site for details. Or you can Igniteck and leave the pick ups alone.

Thanks for the how-to on the ignition timing.  I'll go ahead with the studs and JE pistons now (stock bore).  Might not be the best solution (programmable) but it ought to work.

Shock out for rebuild/correct spring (had one for a 165lb dude...I'm 220)

Rotors are nearly apart....need re-anodizing.  Any idea where I should send the carriers?  I bet that gold is going to be hard to match.

Still trying to figure out what to do with the wheels....they were half ass polished by the PO.....get them done well or have the PC'd silver or something.

I too had an SP, one of the last before Pierre got a hold of the design, and remember that there was a rash of frame cracks. Ducati was going to replace mine, but would not pay for moving all the parts! So, I had it TIG welded locally for 50 bucks. Might as well check on it while you have it apart - the cracks on mine were on the upper frame tubes about an inch or so from the steering stem.

Everything that was available in carbon fibre was replaced on this bike.  Magnesium wheels, you name it.  It is about 365lbs wet, plus FCRs, short manifolds, axtell heads, etc etc etc etc

First gen SS/Monsters always have such a sinister vibe.  Good on ya.

Minor update:

Cases painted and looking good.  Heads are done and headed back to me on Monday.  Ohlins shock refreshed/rebuilt and coming back as well.

Waiting for CC to get the cylinder studs back in stock, then I'll be waiting on those to put the top end back together.

Tires mounted, bearings in.  Waiting on bags of bolts for reassembly.  

Rotors are re-anodized and new Eclips installed (rotors refreshed)

Trying to figure out how to refinish the rear caliper.  I found a new one, but the finish doesn't match the 6 pot nissin's I'm going to use, and I'm gonna be picky on this one.

999 masters, M label levers and some billet reservoir caps arrived yesterday :)
999 aluminum clutch basket is here, clutch is assembled with a STM PP (red) and stainless springs/silver one piece cap.

To be honest, I'm not so sure about the color on the engine cases.  I'm hoping with some red bodywork, and perhaps doing the heads in red will tie it all in together.  I hope it works!

Opinions on the color(s) please!  Swingarm is done in matching metallic gunmetal like the frame.  Looks kinda flat in the garage, but has a good bit of shine out in the sun.  Wheels are same gloss (~50%) as the side cases.

Minor update:

Still waiting on a bunch of little bits.  I need the sight-glass window.  Also need to either leave the studs in, or wait till the end of the month for the APE studs. 

Front end is on it now, 999 masters, billet tops and levers, and have the wiring ran. 

This weekend was take it easy and build a fire-pit day.  Hopefully the wheels I bought early last week will show up soon, so I can make it into a roller at least. 

Can you install studs while the motor is bolted in the frame?

Yes, but you won't be able to get the vertical head on unless you are rolling the case over.

What are the dims for the ARP studs?

Meant APE studs.  CACycleworks says end of the month until they come in :(

Not sure on the dimensions.  Tempted to get it together as it is, but I figure it's already 3 weeks behind, whats another 2.

Ordering body-work bits I need from Kaemna.

Can't actually assemble anything until the APE studs arrive at CA-Cycleworks...and then from there to me. 

Gathering parts is fun, and frustrating.  I know there will be little bits an pieces that I didn't get and won't know about them until I'm right in the middle of it.

CA-cycleworks says the studs will ship out on Friday.  Next weekend is "American Supercamp" here in GA, but I'll get done what I can before hand.

Still waiting to hear on a time frame for the RW bodywork, but the rest ought to come together quickly now :)

What headlight or fairing are you putting on this bike?  I like this dual headlight setup. what do you think?  The engine looks good so far. I don't think it looks too dark. What color are you planning for the bodywork?

APE studs arrived yesterday.....but of course I have a full plate this week so I might not get a chance to assemble until next week sometimes.....this weekend is American Supercamp!

In any case, I should have all the bits to actually put the motor back together here shortly.  Then I can make it a roller, and find out what I'm REALLY missing :)


Thanks btw!  The more I look at the color the more it's grown on me.  Should look good with the black barrels and red heads to match the clutch.

Parts came in today....well some of them.

Actually there were a bunch of parts that showed up, unfortunatly for me the dealer I ordered from send the cush drive PINS, not the damn cush drives themselves.  This sucks in monumental ways as I waited 2 weeks for the parts to show up from Italy, and they ordered the wrong bits.  Thankfully I'm not planning on using those wheels, or I at least have a set of wheels to roll the thing around on.  Also a few other parts were wrong, but at least I've got the inspection/timing window and the oil sight glass....I can now bolt the side covers back on.   I'm not super happy with the way the finish turned out on the side covers, but from 12" away they look pretty darn good, so I'll live with them.   I'm not building a show bike, but a nice clean rider that I can be proud of (I have to keep that concept in my head!)

I should have the O-rings needed to put the barrels back on this week before I go to ASC, so I can button the motor up for good (I hope).

Can you elaborate on what all you did (prep through present) to paint your crankcases and sidecases?

I used paint stripper (aircraft stripper at 'zone) to remove a bunch of the paint.  They I masked it off as good as I could and soda blasted the rest of the loose paint.  I then washed it off, blew it dry and masked it off again.

Then used VHT's engine paint starting with the primer, then the paint.  I did 6 coats total, 2 primer and 4 light color coats.

Was a whole day affair, and a pain....but better than what it looked like before by about a million times. 

i take it you have your own soda blaster contraption?

yup, bought it at HF last time I was nearby.  I think it was $70 after a 20% coupon.  The large one, holds 40lbs.  So far, it's been great.

heads should be here tomorrow.  All new guides, a new cam bearing, surfaced and seats cut ready to go.  Was a lot more than I was thinking, but at least I know they will be better than new.

The last little box of stuff needed to reassemble the motor ought to be in as well.   

Took me forever to get one friggin stud out of the motor last night.  I'll have to try a different approach tomorrow and see if I can't figure something better out.

Any harm in re-using the head stud nuts if I double-nut them on the old studs to remove? 

that's how i did it on the "placeholder" crankcases in my garage (one half has a crack in it, so I thought it was a nice "free" version of the SpeedyMoto tool for the 2v bikes where the frame doesn't connect to the swingarm - so you can roll it around when actual motor is dropped) - removed the cylinder studs to make it easier to grab it by the cylinder holes and take up less space, etc.

Question.....anyone have access to a parts diagram for this bike? 

Ex: taillight.  I bought an entire assembly new from ducati, but I can't figure out how it mounts.   From the inside w/grommets?  Pics would be helpful.

I have 851/888 & SPO, which is minimal help - only that there are quite a lot of "similarities". (lemme know if you want 'em).  You may want to check Duc.nu for a owner's manual/workshop manual.  For motor stuff, that 900 is like every other 900 - and the only difference is those external oil lines and small alternator setup when comparing to new-fangled 900 diagrams available online. To make it "more accurate", I frequently use the '00 750 diagram, since it was carbd, as is my 900's.

also, i don't know if I dig the dual headlights posted above. Its kind of neat, but since its a long-since discontinued bike, having a clean example of the original is pretty cool too.   I liked the "supermono conversion --> superdue" fairings I found for the supersport from airtech streamlining awhile back (until I learnt they are supposedly now great quality) - but I'd only use something non-traditional like this *if* I didn't mind wholesale departing from the original bike. (Such will be the case with my M900/888/S4 "Monster Cup" tribute bike I will dub "the Trackster")

runs aboot $800.  (which ain't bad if you compare to the price of just the front fairing for a 916-996-998 in carbon fiber - from CM Composit its no less than $500!)

IMO, I would have close to stock looks. They are a classic.

I've always liked the looks of the 900SS and especially the CR.  That is until i get to the front view.  I would do just about any thing to get rid of a rectangular headlight.

I really like the stock headlight nowdays. Its part of the bikes character and identity. Im even going to put the beer tray bake on the Monster, albeit with number plate tidy. You know, keep the character of the older model with subtle modification.

ARRRG!  Went to bolt on the starter, and I can't find the gasket for it.  [bang] [bang] 

Hopefully someone has it in stock somewhere, otherwise it's ANOTHER 2 weeks :(

Dealer sent me 4 orings of a size I only need 3, and 2 orings of another size that I need 3.  Great.

Install loosely on frame
Machine engine case and frame for 12mm engine bolts
Install rear wheel
Install front wheel

Roller assembly complete

Install carb manifold
Install carbs AFTER checking existing jetting – 165mains 60 pilots 4th notch on needles
Install pod filters

Headed to lowes to buy a 15mm wrench...so I can make another head nut torque tool.  14mm would have been nice here ducati (so I could use the other one I just made weeks ago)

Squish measured out at 1.06mm on the tightest portion, 1.10mm on the largest part.  Looks like I'm good to go w/o base gaskets :D

I want to confirm the orientation of the piston before I button it up completely.....


Can someone look at the above pic and let me know if the piston is oriented the correct way?  Intake on left.  The depth measures the same, but the done is biased towards the right (exhaust) side.

is the swingarm aluminium or steel?  I can't tell it looks like one of the box alu ones.  powder coated?

you can use either 14 or 15 mm nuts, i think mdmetric has the right type of 10.8 nuts.  

the 14mm wrench is much easier to work with, 1mm is a lot in that space..

I want to relocate the oil cooler up high to clean up the lines of the bike a bit.  

Swapping the bottom cover to the top will interfere with the tach cable, which I need to keep.

What cover do I need for this?  Supersport 96-99?  Monster year XX ?  I've searched a bit, but I keep coming up with conflicting answers.  

Anyone have one I can buy?

Bob Miller used to make a kit for it:

He did not use a stock cooler , it was shorter and wider, but I don't know who made it.  The stock cooler will stick out from the bottom about 1/2 inch. 

I've thought about side-mounting two smaller coolers, one on each side, in series, but it would have one hot hot one and one warm one.  Under the and in the flow of air to the cylinders .. not a good idea on a full fairing.

You already have your frame coated, so you probably don't want to weld more tabs to it, but it is a cool out of the way place to mount the oil cooler.

I think the in frame one wouldn't get enough air without an airduct going to it.

As cool as it would be, I think I'm just gonna make a bracket and hang it above the front cylinder.  Or find that upper valve cover that would make it work.  Have to keep my focus :)

I'm waiting on some bodywork now..... no idea when it might or might now get here....I've been trying to get ahold of it for months now in anticipation of a delay.  Sigh...

Oh!  My cheap ass ordered some dan moto carbon cans.  Nice quality sleeves for $200 shipped.  After I trim off the end cap ridding myself of their logo, and mount up some straps to finish off the ends, they will look great.   I ordered up the tubing I need to fab the exhaust up, so the fun part will be started shortly :)

did you read the danmoto instructions and the part about NOT dynoing their carbon mufflers.  they're not very confident, with good cause from what i read on the AF1 forum.

Nope, didn't read that.  I wonder why....are they worried about them falling apart?  It's a perf tube in a cannister....the insides look like just about every muffler I've looked inside.

I did notice a caution about installing the quiet baffles on the end of the muffler....the destructions indicated I should put the baffle on the inlet into the muff.

I did the opposite on my bike: Got a 900ss valve cover and stuck it lower. If you can wait a month (home remodel going on, crap in storage) and remind me, I can see if I can dig up my old Monster cover.

Actually, I was going to use this as an excuse to buy a nice sheet metal brake/sheer so I can make a bracket and mount it to the frame.


WOO HOO!  I was able (thanks to a DMF member) to get in touch with, and order my bodywork from RW.   I also ordered the tube I'll need to make up my exhaust.  Should be together hopefully before I ship off sometime in Jan.

The tape is where the slip fit/spring clamps will go.  Waiting on the flange do I can finish weld and weld on the spring clamps.  Now, on to the vertical head.

Tube is 1.75" stainless .056 wall (16 gauge).  Formed cones bring the 1.75" out to 2".  The flanges are laser cut 3/8" stainless.  I turned down a piece of stainless pipe to make the shoulder/flange seat connection for the head.   Cans are Danmoto's finest :D   

System will be jet hot coated black (more than likely), and I've got some laser cut rivet/can brackets to make them look a bit more respectable.

Looking good. The exhaust on my Monster has been Jet Hot coated black. I like it, but it does show chips more than a silver coated exhaust.  Also silver would contrast nice with your black engine cases.

I'm going to work on the MTS1200 today, install a few bits I got back from powder, and the heavier rear spring.  If there is time I'll finish up the V exhaust pipe to the can, then figure out how to spaghetti them together.  I may just put a simple crossover inbetween them, as this isn't a high-po motor nor will it see a bunch of RPMS (stock heads/cams).

I need to finish the electronics tray, figure out where my tank is leaking from ?!?!?!, and paint it.

Theo, are you at all worried about those oil lines being so close to the header? reason I ask is because i'm about to fab up a set of my own using those very same fittings and lines...

on a second look at some other photos, maybe they are further away than i think, and it's just a funny angle that makes them look so close??

They are about an inch away, and yes it's something I need to address.  I'm going to pick up some 15 degree ends and see if that helps.  Nothing really to tie them back on down there  :(

Crap... i'm not so sure 15° bends are going to help much, and they might be just enough to give you a clearance problem with that starter, right? I'm going to look for some more solutions. At $3 each, I'm not to concerned with having a couple extra straight swivel seal fititngs laying around ;D

it looks like we can tuck them back far enough. i asked this bikes owner, and he's had no issues. all things considered, that area of the bike gets a good amount of air while moving. if you're ceramic coating your pipes (which i am not), then you should have even less to worry about.

check out these little wire brackets he has (my bike has it as well). i think this is the ticket.

also, i noticed the two bolt holes on the engine/head there, one on each side. might be able to fab up a line holder out of something that mounts in one of those holes that keeps the lines close to the starter.

looking around at fittings and whatnot, i think the 60° fittings that aeroquip has MIGHT work... but they clock in at $20/per, so I'm willing to give it a shot without them first. aside from that, no other real options unless you put in an inverted-flare hardline with a custom 90° bend... but then you've got a metric-to-AN adapter, followed by an AN-to-InvertedFlare adapter, followed by inverted flare hardline, followed by InverterFlare-to-AN adapter, followed by AN-6 fitting... too many potential leaky spots for my comfort level... plus it'll look ridiculous...
