got my top triple bored out for the sbk fork conversion on my 01 900 rebuild.
any suggestions on how to shim the bottom triple? I've heard a beer can is the right thickness.
any suggestions and tips on how to do the shims would be much appreciated.
the shim must be .5mm or about 20/22 gauge. Aluminum is best.
Think about it. You're going from original 54mm to the SBK's which are 53. That's a 1mm difference. Since you gotta go by radius, it's 1/2 the difference.
thanks very much.
I did know it was .5mm needed for the shims, I was just wondering if anyone could confirm that a beer can is the right thickness and wondered if anyone had any tips on the easiest way to install the shim.
I do remember someone mentioning that they wrapped the shim and then wired it around the fork overnight, to get it to fit well and slip into the bottom triples easier.

That should answer most if not all of your questions.
Beer can works great, but you will have to cut two of the shims for each fork, a single layer is not thick enough.
Sheet aluminum is available in 0.020" thickness, works perfectly.
Inquire at a few sheetmetal/fabricator places and likely they'll cut you off a small piece for small money.
thanks to everyone who took the time to answer.
Artful: your write-up was very helpful.
