Title: Issues Getting the Rear Axle Straight
Post by: Kegan on August 19, 2011, 05:54:29 PM
Hey everyone,

I'm having issues getting the rear axle straight after tensioning the chain. I followed the following article: http://www.ducatisuite.com/chain.html. (http://www.ducatisuite.com/chain.html.) It's all torqued to spec, each side just a bit at a time. Any suggestions? I've redone this whole thing multiple times.

Many places recommend that you don't go off of the hash marks. Instead, measure from the axle to a fixed point on the swingarm.

A common problem is that you don't snug up the axle adjuster bolts after the axle nuts are torqued down.

Was your picture taken right after you tightened the axle nuts, or after you went for a ride?

You have to realize that when you torque the nut, it moves the plate below it to the left or right (depending on the side) until the swingarm stops it so they won't be perfect on the marks once torqued.  Measuring from the the forward swingarm mount to the center of the rear axle nut on both sides will tell you if you are even.

Okay, that confirms what I thought about the plate moving. Good call on measuring it from a fixed point though. This is after I went for a ride, but it hadn't changed at all from prior to the ride. I'll re-measure. Thanks guys.
