Title: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: godudi on August 24, 2011, 10:08:34 AM Hi
I own a Ducati Monster 1100 EVO (single sided swing arm) and I wonder if there are other ways to get the rear wheel off the ground without a rear stand so I can easily clean and lube the chain? Please share your ideas, Thanks, David Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: avizpls on August 24, 2011, 10:14:07 AM got an overhead I beam?
and a few ratchet straps? Take your seat off and find a sturdy spot to hook onto. The higher on the bike the better, and make the points on the I beam wide apart (at least 4 feet) Bike will sway, but its doable. I see your edit and raise you my own: just to lube chain? Have someone sit on the bike and slowly move it for you. the above isnt worths unless you need to remove the wheel. I don't have an overhead I beam nor someone to sit on the bike and move it for me. This is exactly how I clean it today, and it is very annoying and not practical :( Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: JEFF_H on August 24, 2011, 10:49:53 AM http://www.hardlineproducts.com/products/rollastand.html (http://www.hardlineproducts.com/products/rollastand.html)

Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: godudi on August 24, 2011, 10:58:53 AM Can I just use a regular floor jack under a certain point and jack the bike up just enough for the rear tire to spin, yet still to be supported by the jack, sidestand, and front tire?

Problems can and have occured which can result in $$$ repairs.

Get a rear stand or do it how you do now. Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: OneWheelDrive on August 24, 2011, 05:48:43 PM [roll] bad idea I guess, scratch that.

Invest $70 in a welded tube rear stand.
Levering the bike around on the sidestand can crack the engine case (as was mentioned earlier) and you really don't want that. Jacking the bike up from below is likely going to involve contact with the case or header pipe beneath the bike (am I right?). Also not a good idea since you may cause the bike to tip, crack the case or tweak the exhaust. I know rolling the bike around while lubing or cleaning the chain isn't convenient, but until you get a rear stand it's better than causing possible damage. They are not heavy like the bulldog but they do the job for a much lower price. Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: Punx Clever on August 26, 2011, 10:04:00 AM Tell me you're joking. Only kinda. I like using the engine hoist. Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: avizpls on August 26, 2011, 10:27:39 AM yeah, but if youre spending that kind of money.....get the correct stand!
I used (not an engine lift) but an overhead beam before I bought a stand, so I know what thats like. The hoist allows for everything from a complete rebuild to oiling the chain. Only thing a hoist doesn't do that a stand does, is storage.

+ (http://www.mccune1.com/3-4%20sch%2040%20pipe.jpg) if you put the pipe through the axle while its on the side stand and adjust the right jackstand to fit, then you can lever the whole bike up by the pipe and slide the left jackstand under. works for the front too ;D ...of course this is ideal for cleaning and lubing...not very practical if you need to take the tire off.... ...and sorry all you HD guys out there...you need hollow axles for this trick [laugh] Title: Re: How to get the rear wheel off the ground without a paddock stand Post by: Narflar on August 26, 2011, 01:18:29 PM Front and rear stand, all in one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/120766857818? Unfortunately I'm 3000 miles away from my garage until december, but darkstar is right, theres no paint on the inside of your axle, and even the ducati performance rear stand for the SSS bikes uses a raw steel stepped pin that goes into the axle...no less harmful than a piece of pipe. Like this, except you slip a pipe or bar through the hollow axle instead of using the spools. Also, if you have rigid, non-hinged footpegs, you can just put the jackstands under the pegs. Won't really work for oiling the chain though.
