Title: eBay headlight
Post by: rac3r on September 27, 2011, 10:39:45 AM
I'm looking to modernize the headlight while still keeping with the Monster theme if that makes sense. I saw this on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-MOTORCYCLE-HALOGEN-HEADLIGHT-HEADLAMP-H4-PROJECTOR-CLEAR-LED-WHITE-HALO-BULB-/370542812107?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5646129bcb (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-MOTORCYCLE-HALOGEN-HEADLIGHT-HEADLAMP-H4-PROJECTOR-CLEAR-LED-WHITE-HALO-BULB-/370542812107?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5646129bcb)

It has a projector in the middle and LED's round the side, not sure if it will fit in the stock bucket. Has anyone tried one of these? I live in the UK so would be good to hear from someone before I go ahead and buy them  [thumbsup]

Hmm might go for the one without LED's

No experience with either. They both look alright.

I'm curious what the LEDs bring to the party that justify that version being a bit over twice the price. Says one could use them as turn signals, if that's what floated your boat. Non-LED version also looks to be higher wattage for the main bulb.

Were I looking to snap up one or the other, I'd probably grab the non-LED setup.

You can't really use them as turn signals because they're white, at least here in the UK they have to be orange. I might try the one without LED's.

I'll post back here with some feedback when I get it

Keep us posted on the install and how easily it went together and how much trouble it caused you....for a price like that i dont know if i can turn away!  [thumbsup]
I might just use you as a guinea pig to test her out first  :P O...and let me know if you needed to use transistors or not....

If memory serves, a 7" lamp is too small for the stock Monster bucket. There have been builds that modify the bucket to accept the smaller diameter (plus the option of replacing the entire bucket).

I was looking into replacing the reflector and lense a while back, and stumbled across this fact.

Not trying to discourage, just verify my memory before you order a 7" lamp thinking it's just a wiring job.

monsters are 7.5". luckily, 7" is a far more common size and finding a bucket shouldn't be a problem. the headlight ears are aluminum and can bend to accept the difference.

I think the LED halo looks kinda cool. As long as it all stays on as a Halo and isn't just for turn indication. Reminds me of an Audi.

Transistors????  I'm assuming you meant Resistors. If the projector bulb + LEDs draws the same current or more than a stock headlamp you shouldn't need Resistors.

To the UK. In total it cost me about £35 which is pretty good, now I have to find a bucket!

Don't want to spoil the party.. But they seem to take the similar H4 (if not same) Halogen bulb that comes on the stock.

It is not the xenon headlight that you normally see on cars.. Not sure how much of a brightness gain you would get by putting a reflector in front of a halogen...  [roll]

Looking forward to hear from your experience though....

I've been running an old 7" headlight off of a 79 Suzuki GS for about a year now and those can be found for a song on ebay.  Let me know when it comes in and if it's too small for the stock Monster bucket, I'd be curious to know if it would fit in the one I have and whether or not it's as bright as I'd like it to be.   Shoot me a PM when it comes in.

BTW, the Zuki bucket I have on now I think looks worlds better than the stock bucket.  You'll have to do some finish work unless you find one in really good shape (not to mention the spacing you'll need if you still have the stock headlight bracket) but they look so much cooler than stock that it's worth it to me.

I know it's a halogen, I will either put a brighter Osram bulb in or fit a HID kit. TBH I wanted a headlight with a clear lens and projector and this was the only one I found. It's been shipped so I'll keep you guys updated when I get it

WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!

It's not a sealed projector inside the headlight it's a normal reflector headlight with a lens stuck in front of it. Because of this most of the light gets reflected around and hardly any goes through the actual 'reflector'. It's going back on ebay!

I'll upload some pics once my SD card decides to work

As you can see the light is all over the place!

if you use a projector, your reflector housing needs to be smooth otherwise the light scatters about everywhere. if you use a projector, the housing needs to be relatively the same size, not 3x bigger.

Someone should of told you that it wasn't going to work from the get go. .

BTW: you cant use a clear lens for you're stock headlight, the lens is a freshnel lens. without it the light wont focus.... and youll just end up having the ebay headlight again.

if you want a clear lens, you need a smooth reflector housing and a projector.

its an endless loop, just give in and do a proper retrofit!

This is the kind of mod I had in mind. But, its a bit of fabrication work on the headlight I think...

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=101 (http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=101)

Its a full projector HID kit. Not sure if the bulbs are included or if its just the conversion kit they are selling for $135...

There are plenty of projectors out there so that's not the problem it's the clear glass/lens you need which I can't make since I'm crap at making things  [laugh]

If I can find a headlight with a clear lens going cheap then I'll buy it and retrofit the projectors
