Title: Re: Amazing Roads around the world Post by: fastwin on October 04, 2011, 06:56:53 AM Back in July 1989 my wife (now ex) and I rode for over 3 weeks through the Alps. Went with a group called Alpen Tours. It was owned by an American who was based in Denver for half the year then out of Horgen, Switzerland during the Euro riding season for his tour rides. He went out of business two years later when we looked into going back for the east Alps ride.
It was awesome! All through Switzerland, into France through Nice and Monte Carlo then crossing the border into northern Italy. Nothing but killer, 2 lane mountain roads staying in small, family owned hotels in small towns along the way. The ride ended in Interlaken, Switzerland then we slowed trailed home to Horgen to turn in the bikes. Best riding I have done or probably will ever do! The damn ex kept all the pictures after we split and wouldn't even share them with me. She knew how much the trip meant to me and refused to even let me make copies. Just more of her evil BS! [evil] [bang] At least I have what's left of my memory of what I saw and looking at threads like this! [thumbsup] [Dolph] [beer] Great thread!! Keep it up. 'what is the fascination with hairpins?'
I just don't get it. A hairpin on a track is one thing ... but some of these roads just seem like a frustrating form of torture. That 1098 video is a case in point: ... see how many gears you can get though on the straight bit before you almost come to a complete stop before you limp around the corner trying not to stall ... repeat continuously until you vomit or lose concentration and plummet to your death ... or maybe you'll be saved the trouble by being taken out by oncoming traffic The trip back down will be even worse. Fluid transitions from one corner to another ... that's my preference. Or perhaps it is just my own lack of ability and riding insecurities coming out. [laugh] Title: Re: Amazing Roads around the world Post by: ungeheuer on October 05, 2011, 08:35:03 PM For Betty....

[bow_down] sometimes we even turn round a go over them for a second run... [laugh].
My only problem is that I'm driving to sweeper van with spare bike and lots of guys luggage but even so I have a ball keeping up with the bikes, not sure about my passenger though... [bang] (they seem to loose thier voice). Lars certainly enjoyed last years trip and posted quite alot of pics on this forum ... [thumbsup]. To echo suzyj, I'm not big on hairpins. Yes, I do enjoy them as part of a longer ride. But I like to have a longer ride in between them. preferably one with corners and hills. I would rather ride a flat road with lots of corners, than a hairpin stair-step up the side of a mountain. Unless that's a prerequisite to connecting with another twisty route. Then, I don't mind the hairpins. Title: Re: Amazing Roads around the world Post by: geoffduc on October 06, 2011, 01:28:28 AM Nice one Lars... [Dolph]

Have to agree with Betty a bit regarding the hairpins. On the previously mentioned '89 Euro bike trip I finally gave up and removed the big tank bag from the Kawi Concours due to all the damn tight hairpin turns. Riding it two up and it not being the world's most nimble bike I just got tired of the bars being pushed into the tank bag at every switchback. Full lock one way then fulll lock the other way all in first gear. Hell, I've made wider u-turns in my garage!! [bang] I guess it would be fun for a bit by yourself on the right bike (motard!!) but it got real old real fast on the heavy Connie. A few tight ones are great as long as they are followed by good sweepers and great scenery. |
