Title: "Ducati Document Holder" under 696 seat?
Post by: mstevens on October 05, 2011, 08:12:15 AM
I saw a Ducati Document Holder (p/n 981004100) at the dealer in Montreal. They "didn't have a key" for their display 696 (Wednesday Thursday Friday?!?) so I couldn't check if it fit under the seat or not. My semi-local dealer can't order just one of these so I'd need to order online. I'd like to get one as a gift for my wife, but it would only be useful if it actually fit on her bike. Can anyone tell me if these will fit under a 696 seat?

Yeah, ducatiz, the women in your life must be positively dripping with gratitude on their birthdays...

i don't buy my wife document holders.  her last birthday, she got a Miu Miu handbag.  Don't even make the beast with two backsing ask how much it cost.  This year, I pulled some favors from friends in Italy to get another one from this years collection which isn't even in the US yet.  I go to Reno or Vegas once a year and spend a week on the craps tables -- alone.  When I come home, Mrs Ducatiz gets a pair of shoes, and yes, the absurdly expensive ones that look like they should be $2 in leather and metal.  "Dripping" with gratitude is right.

I don't know that it's useful to get in a pissing match over who gives his wife the nicest presents. However, the 696 was a gift a couple of years ago as was the BMW X3 she got for Valentine's Day this year. My wife's more of an Hermes girl when it comes to purses.

What I don't get is why you find it necessary or helpful to answer a fairly straightforward question about whether a particular Ducati accessory fit a particular Ducati bike by suggesting I give my wife a 5-cent packing slip envelope as a stocking stuffer.

looking at the size and shape of it, i highly doubt it will fit without folding it in half... and even then it might be a stretch unless you take out the tool kit.  the space beneath the seat is ridiculously small, pop it open and you can see yourself.

if you're dead set on fitting on the bike, i know that if you get a 696 sargent seat has a under seat container option that might be able to fit that in.

also, offhand, i normally carry my documents in my jacket... leaving docs in the bike just never seemed like a good idea in the case of a off/theft etc etc.

It's called humour. Maybe you've heard of it.

how about one of these (http://www.aerostich.com/motofile.html), two pieces of velcro and maybe you can put a Ducati patch of your choice on it for her.

though.. I'd just rock the packing slip envelope  ;)

i honestly wasn't trying to be flip!  i must have read your OP too fast, i thought you just wanted something to stick the docs in... honest!

now that i look again i see the bit about a gift.  i wouldn't have put that envelope up if i saw that.  but honestly, that's what i use.  seal them in and tear it off and throw it away for the next one whne i open it.

and then it got out of hand....  mea culpa

the area behind the tool kit where the seat bows up underneath is kinda big. I recently put a tire repair kit in that area for a trip.
So you have a bit more room than you think on the 696.

Guys, thanks for all the suggestions for how to carry documents.

As it turns out, I have no interest whatsoever in any such suggestions. The only thing I'm really interested in is whether a particular accessory fits a particular bike.

these are flexible fabric pockets that can be rolled or folded to fit.

 I doubt they are waterproof, I would suggest storing this inside something waterproof should you live somewhere that water may be an issue. may I suggest;

Maybe she won't even care about any lack of practicality.

Women are often able to overcome enormous amounts of pain and can be very creative finding practical solutions if an item fits their taste.

Get it, give it and let her decide what to use it for and where to put it.

I really do think ducatiz was just trying to be helpful - a shockingly abnormal concept though I do concede  ;).

Unfortunately I cannot give you any useful advice on the compatibility (or otherwise) of this accessory with your good Lady's M696 either.

Good luck in finding a suitable gift  [thumbsup].

Okay, here's some info for you.

I don't have a 696 so I have no idea how big the underseat storage area is.

However, my S4RS under seat storage area is roughly: 8.5" x 6".

The depth varies, because it's concave, but it's about 1" at the shallowest and 2" at the deepest.

Anyway, from what I can tell Ducati makes two document storage holders. One with the new logo, and one "old" one that just says Ducati in red:

New:

"Old":

I have the "old" one. I bought it from the Ducati dealership in Bologna early 2010.

It is roughly 6 3/4" x 5 1/8".

I have to assume the "new" one is just about the same size.

So if the 696 storage area is roughly the same as the S4RS, you should be good to go.

It's also only about $15 online so it's probably worth just buying the thing and if it doesn't fit the bike you can toss it in the car or something. :)

Hope this helps!

The tray is a relatively small area, however, there is a pretty large void on the bottom of the seat that should be able to fit a nice size case... just some velcro tape and you should be good to go...

To get an idea, look at the sargent seat and the plastic container they fit under

I would bet, and I'm just guessing here, that it is meant to hold documents like registration and insurance.  Maybe the owners manual.

Commonwealth Moto gives this description:
Quote
Keep your race credentials in style with the Ducati document holder featuring the new Company logo.

Emphasis is mine.  And, considering it's listed in the Ducati accessories catalog as a wallet...

By the way, what kind of self respecting Ducati dealer doesn't have the key to their display cabinet?  I thought that you made it out with either an overly expensive piece of something or they sent the italian mob on your ass...

I believe he said they didn have a key to the 696 on the floor.

It's also way too thin to hold an owners manual. It has a waterproof insert that would hold insurance, reg, license, but that's about it.

The one I looked at definitely would not hold the manual.

They claimed they didn't have a key for the 696 that was sitting on their display floor.

i think the "it's only $15" comment makes the most sense.  at that price point, it's pretty much something you can buy and find something else to do with it if it doesnt fit.

that's like... $2 less than a pack of cigarettes in nyc.  which, sadly enough, is the yardstick i use to measure things i buy.  haha

Ahh, ok, I just read "They didn't have a key for their display..." and started thinking WTF.

I still think not having a key for their bike is a WTF concept as well.

Could be that home-bro at the apparel desk didn't have a key to the bike.  Who knows.

That's true - the store manager showing me the wallet didn't have keys to any of the bikes. The only other employee didn't, either. I've been there a couple of times while walking past and they've always been impressively uninterested in selling anything. I can't figure out why I keep going in.
