Title: the mechanical retard strikes again....... a 2001 cromo rebuild
Post by: pitbull on October 10, 2011, 03:35:41 PM
Last year I posted the thread below of my adventures rebuilding a 2000 m900, I had picked up crashed, for my girl.

Despite the struggle and frustration I decided to tackle the job once again with my old 2001 900 cromo.

After 9 years, 100 000 km's, and 6th gear crapping out, it was time for a rebuild.

Last year I had noticed a an odd noise in 6th gear that progressively worsened. While I'm fine doing basic to moderate engine maintenance, splitting the cases to fix anything is outside my modest (retarded) mechanical skill set. After visiting a friend and local ducati mechanic, he confirmed that 6th gear was kaput and suggested there was no use in splitting the cases to fix it without refreshing the engine, given the mileage. He would have done it for me for $2000, but having just bought a new house I decided to wait until I saved up. He next suggest I pick up a use engine online, install it myself and then maybe get my engine rebuilt to higher performance specs down the road when I had some more cash. It sounded like a good plan to me.

Here is the bike pre rebuild.

Over the last couple years I picked up a few parts that I wanted to swap out. Among the collection was an ohlins rears shock, sbk forks (both sprung for my weight), a road racing exhaust and a couple other little items. I waited to install them for a couple reasons, 1) I was too busy riding and 2) I knew a rebuild was coming in the near future

I didn't take pics along the way this time and only have finished pictures. I still have a couple more things to do, but here's where I'm at so far.

I had the frame, footpeg brackets, swingarm, handlebar clamps, headlight ring and a couple other little things powdercoated.

I did the headlight/gauge drop mod which I think looks good, but would look better with clip ons. Once I find clip ons with a decent rise I will likely buy 'em. I'm getting too old for low clip ons.

I also sanded down the cast markings on the triples and had them pc'd as well.

I picked up the roadracing exhaust off another member here and painted them black with high heat paint. I love the look of them.

I also love the sound of the roadracing exhaust, but they are super duper, southpark, f*cking harley fag loud. 10 years ago I would have rode around loud and proud, but in my old age I don't enjoy them.

I need to find a way to muffle them, so any and all suggestions are welcome.

the last few things I have left to collect and swap out will be, clip ons, rear sets and lighter wheels.

I haven't done them yet due to cost. I don't buy anything on credit anymore so can only collect stuff as I can afford to pay for it cash on the barrel.

Regarding the RR exhaust...

Is there a crossover between the header pipes so they share both mufflers?
It looks kinda like it has one, but can't tell for sure.

I'm not sure if it's a crossover per se..... but there does appear to be a joint just before the exhaust cans, on the last bend that opens both pipes to both cans.

Looking good....I especially like the part where you pay cash for everything.  I try to make that a practice too, but learned the hard way years back.

If we had a day where we could only ride things that were completely paid for, the roads would look much different.

I learned the hard way as well. I've gotten myself in uncomfortable credit situations before and decided about 7-8 years back I would never do so again. Now I carry almost no debt outside my mortgage. If I get up to more than $300 on my credit card, I get a little anxious.
