Title: iOS5 , iCloud
Post by: ab on October 12, 2011, 05:31:11 PM
Anyone upgrade their iphone4 operating system to iOS 5 released today yet ?
I wonder if Siri will work on iPhone 4.  I think the spec is for it to work on the 4S model.
Would have been nice to have that and use with my Scala Rider and hear the text messages etc   ;D

I find it ironic that when I tried to watch the features video, I repeatedly suffered a plug-in failure.  This was on an iMac, and using Safari.

[thumbsdown]

Now that sucks.

Safari is lame... Pretty much any browser (even, god forbid, IE9) is better.

I upgraded the OS last night. Siri will only be on the 4S, so put that idea aside.

I haven't played with all the new gizzys - but I did set up the notification center and am digging that already. The crappy way previous versions did notifications was one of my biggest gripes - especially when folks did it way better years ago. So now with the less intrusive notifications, and being able to access them all in one spot, that gripe is gone.

I updated yesterday, and its awesome on my 4G. My only con was that I had to manually reinstall all my apps, but because of the iCloud backup, my settings were already in place for Twitter, FB, etc.

From the lock screen, double-hit the Home button, and you now have a Camera button - then can take pics with the Vol Up button.

Notifications are super configurable - texts no longer lock up the screen, they just have a nice banner that appears at the top of the screen. Completely configurable for each app.

Finally we can have CUSTOM TEXT TONES! As well as custom tones for Calendar events, Tweets, new/sent mail, etc. We're no longer limited to the dozen default sounds that every iPhone used to be able to make. Still have to be in m4r format.

iCloud backup is pretty sweet, but can take a while. Nice to know it'll be doing this every night.

Luckily, I did not have to reinstall all my apps - it only took about 20-30 mins from download to restore.  I only have about 5G of stuff, that might have expedited the process.

New features are nice, but subtle - I like having buttons to push to shoot photos, that was a welcome addition.  I shot a video last night that I could swear was auto-image-stabilized, although I don't see that being part of the improvements for iOS5.

The weather widget also adds a current location tab in addition to whatever locations you have configured - small, but nice touch.

The notification center is nice - I like that that they added another gesture from the home screen

The iCloud site is OK so far- my photo stream has not shown up, but I have not played with the settings yet.  I am wondering if this will be more like a free web hosting service (which would be great) or just a place to back up 5G worth of stuff.  The find my phone feature on the site is cool. Or troubling, depending on how you feel about things like that.

Not sure if it was a film for iOS5 or for the 4S but it did mentioned image stabilization.

I'd check every so often. They can stagger releases a bit to try to even out spikes on their servers. Also, the update isn't for everything. If you've got a 3G or older, you're SOL.

unlikely since iweb isn't one of the services making the transition from mobileme to icloud.

I finally upgraded to iOS5 and everything is working fine.  I had to resync my scala rider G4 Bluetooth.  I even upgraded my laptop to Lion finally.  No problems at all so far.

Yeah, no Siri on the 4.

Dirty pics do not get added to any album. Lol. Forget putting that on iCloud.

As much as iCloud is cool, I don't really like the idea that everything I use and my contacts etc is all on one spot where really it can be abused by certain authorities if need be.  Authorities love the iCloud as it makes life easy for them.  I wonder what the policies are around cloud and access to authorities etc.

most likely warrant required, just like phone records and email...

if you're really paranoid, don't enable icloud backups and backup locally w/ encrypted backups to an also-encrypted backup volume.

Is anyone else having an issue with the Apple ID verification e-mail?

I request to verify, but nothing happens.

I didn't think the upgrade to the iPhone 4S would be worth it, but this dictation software is incredible. I'm typing all this out by just talking to my phone.
