Title: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: zarn02 on October 15, 2011, 03:36:50 PM I did a cursory search and didn't find anything. Doesn't mean this isn't a derby, just that my search-fu is weak, and I don't spend any time in TOSAT, or the other general-purpose threads where it might be found.
Australian PSA. "Enjoy." 'The Ride' TAC Motorcycle Safety Campagin in Australia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxG5wET_w20#) Edit: Phrasing changed to more accurately express myself. Hopefully. Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: ungeheuer on October 15, 2011, 03:47:52 PM Unsurprisingly I've seen it before. Once or thrice.
But I'm interested in why you find it post-worthy? Not that I'm suggesting it isnt. Or is. Just curious :). Cheers, Ung. It popped up on Asphalt & Rubber a bit ago, and I'd not seen it. Figured I'd pass it on, in the event others would find it noteworthy. Certainly not the first PSA that's had a thread started over it. Certainly no more or less post-worthy than a lot of stuff that gets posted. *shrugs* Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: ungeheuer on October 15, 2011, 04:04:20 PM Zarn, I feared that what I wrote would look like I was beeing critical of you for posting it.....
I wasnt. Not at all. I'm just interested in how these things look to veiwers outside of Australia - we're so used to em that they barely register any more. Or maybe thats just me. So I'm wondering if its noteworthy coz such TV campaigns are not so common elsewhere? Or if the rest of the world shows similar safety ads? [thumbsup] Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: justinrhenry on October 15, 2011, 04:11:27 PM that commercial makes motorcycling look pretty make the beast with two backsing scary. [Dolph]

Or maybe thats just me. So I'm wondering if its noteworthy coz such TV campaigns are not so common elsewhere? Or if the rest of the world shows similar safety ads? The PSAs that I tend to see in the States are more "Don't do ______ or you'll get a ticket." whereas this is more of a "Stupidity kills, and here's how!" (For example, most of the anti-drunk driving things I see focus on you losing your license and going to jail. They tend to gloss over the possibility of the driver's actions leading to other folks' injury.) I'm just starting to see ads on TV here reminding people to look out for bikes, and maybe not run over them when they do see them. If we've got an analogous "don't ride like a make the beast with two backstard" ad, I don't recall it. As to whether any of these things are actually effective, I dunno. Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: lazylightnin717 on October 16, 2011, 05:29:17 AM I would say that countries other than the US tend to have a more direct way of "getting to the point" about things.
When I was studying in Italy, it cracked me up every time I read "YOU WILL DIE" on a pack of cigarettes versus all the surgeon general warning crap here in the US Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: fastwin on October 16, 2011, 08:11:59 AM I thought it was well done. Had the good "you're gonna die doing this" scene at the end. Very effective. [thumbsup] That needs to be shown here in the states about once every 30 minutes.

[Dolph] It is when you do stupid shit like the rider/actors in the PSA. It's a point well made. Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: orangelion03 on October 16, 2011, 09:10:17 AM WHOA!!!
I think a lot of us here in the states are shocked by what PSAs in the rest of the world are willing to show. Seems the approach here is a little softer... Brutal as the end of this one is, the most striking PSA for me is the British one against texting/cell phone use. Perhaps if they were willing to be a little more "disturbing" they might have more impact here. Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: thought on October 16, 2011, 03:55:23 PM i like it.
one of the first things i did once i started riding was to troll youtube and look up every crash video i could find. i wanted to be able to understand what i was getting into before anything bad happened, and to this day i always rein myself in because of them. i would totally be for these kind of videos being played in the us too... but then again, like ung said, after a while it would just start to get a bit meh as you eventually get numb to it. Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: He Man on October 16, 2011, 05:22:54 PM i like the message they send because i feel like if someone tells you to do something, they ignore it, but if tell you that its you're choice, then it increases the likelyness of someone paying attention at the very least.

Right. The message seems to be "Hey, we all know bikers are more at risk on the roads, but if you ride like a jackass those risks increase. Your call, mate." Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: chixstrip on October 16, 2011, 06:15:00 PM Tell-it-like-it-is. No BS, Aussie-styled. In Asia, the ads are similar but they throw in an extra guilt element. After the fatal crash, there would be a clip of the wife n kids without daddy.
Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: fastwin on October 16, 2011, 07:22:54 PM Nothing wrong with that. Our actions on the road effect a lot more folks than just us. I know all too well. :P

Title: Re: Australian Motorcycle PSA Post by: justinrhenry on October 20, 2011, 05:35:20 PM they'll never have commercials like that in the U.S. because the would be sued immediately from all sides by pansies that think it's too graphic. the result of the suit would be a huge cash payout to the lawyers and a new government department similar to the FCC that would regulate and control motorcycle PSAs. Of course this department would be funded from tax dollars and once they create the department they would never be able to get rid of it no matter how wasteful and stupid it is.
