Title: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Travman on October 28, 2011, 07:37:01 PM I test rode an ST3 today and it got me thinking about the possibility of of stuffing a ST3 engine into a Monster frame and using one of those smaller Pace radiators. Has anybody ever done this before? Any pictures of the results?

Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: zarn02 on October 28, 2011, 08:15:18 PM I can't remember hearing about anybody doing that particular swap, but it can't be that hard.1
1Assuming you want to spend a considerable amount of time and money. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: The Don on October 28, 2011, 10:28:01 PM I thought that th ST and monster frame were one and the same, no?
Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: zarn02 on October 28, 2011, 10:46:56 PM I thought that th ST and monster frame were one and the same, no? Early Monster frames (Uhm... '02 and prior, or thereabouts?) were based on the 888 frame. Later Monster frames were based on the ST. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Raux on October 28, 2011, 11:41:53 PM Does the ST3 use the SBK type throttle bodies? That would be the only issue I see. That and the mounts for the radiators.

Would it be easier to put Monster bodywork on the ST3. Thats if you want it to be easier. Mmick Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Raux on October 29, 2011, 02:50:02 AM Hey Travman, would be as hard as turning a sbk into a monster. lots of parts relocationsWould it be easier to put Monster bodywork on the ST3. There was a thread about them a while back. Basically they are more narrow and more aestically pleasing than stock radiators .Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Travman on October 29, 2011, 03:46:18 AM I thought that the ST and monster frame were one and the same, no? Yes, like Zarn02 said. The only differences I know about is the extra frame rails in the tail section for extra passenger support for the ST's. Also, the ST frames will have tabs for mounting all the extra stuff. The mounting of the engine to the frame and the swingarm to the engine are the same. I was thinking of a 2002+ frame, but I don't see why an earlier version frame wouldn't work. That and the mounts for the radiators. Not sure about the SBK type throttle bodies, but that is the kind of stuff I was wondering about. I'm thinking the induction, ECU, and gauges would be the biggest obstacles. Then mounting and minimizing a radiator and coolant expansion container. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: DRKWNG on October 29, 2011, 06:29:13 AM I'd love to do something like that to my SC. I think the extra scoot would really make that bike move right along, especially after an over-bore and high comps. [evil]
Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: 1KDS on October 29, 2011, 02:14:29 PM The ST motors are Monster width. That's one hurdle already jumped.
Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Travman on October 29, 2011, 03:16:34 PM It is not a bad looking engine. Pretty much just like the 1000 DS without the cooling fins.

I think the extra scoot would really make that bike move right along, especially after an over-bore and high comps. [evil] You really should try my bike the next time we ride. Try it back to back with your SC and see if it has any "extra scoot". [evil]Shame about the wet clutch though... That's strange. The ST3 I rode had an open dry clutch. I guess Ducati made some with dry and some with wet clutches. Maybe like the 2006 Sport 1000 with dry clutches and the 2007+ with wet clutches.Edit: I just looked it up. 2004 ST3 had a dry clutch. 2005-07 had wet clutches. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: DRKWNG on October 29, 2011, 04:20:36 PM The monster will, as it already makes a bit more power stock when compared to the SC due to the larger airbox. And with the internal work you've done, it's basic math. Mine will still pull away in the twisties though. :D

I'd be interested in what you thought?Mine will still pull away in the twisties though. :D Serious question, do SC's handle better than Monsters? Or are you referring to your BST's and suspension? Or were you talking riding skills smack? If you're trash talking then let me know. I'll have to sleep on it and get back you with something witty tomorrow. [cheeky] The ergos on the SC allow you to load up the front end a bit more than on a monster, thus allowing you to push a bit harder into a turn. Then the fact that the wheels weight about as much as a cat's hairball help as well. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? I've been dreaming of tearing mine apart and making it naked. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on November 01, 2011, 07:44:00 PM (http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/Ducati%20Monster%20S4%20%204.jpg)
buy an s4 and call it a day? Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: brad black on November 01, 2011, 07:55:31 PM would be much easier to buy a 4v one as is, s4r will be more powerful everywhere.
Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: Travman on November 02, 2011, 05:23:33 PM would be much easier to buy a 4v one as is, s4r will be more powerful everywhere. Yeah, you are right. It just seemed like a cool idea after riding an ST3 and then seeing a wrecked Monster for sale and then an ST3 engine on eBay all in the same day. Title: Re: ST3 engine in a Monster frame? Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on November 02, 2011, 08:40:41 PM it would be a cool and feasible project if you had a big chunk of it ready (monster missing a motor, good motor needing a frame) but there are way "cooler" builds if your starting from scratch.
I know that sounds like a shitty thing to say, but you get what I mean. |
