I recently picked up an AR-15 and I'm looking for a less restrictive place to shoot it.  The public ranges don't allow rapid fire and you have to stay stationary.  Any suggestions on a private range?  The general rules seem to be: no occupied buildings within 100 yards, solid backstop (hill or something) and can't shoot towards a road.

I want to say any national forest you are allowed to "un-load at will" pending you are a few hundred yard away from a road. key word is national forest.

When i head out to visit friends in rural areas, I go to the public open spaces where the locals normally shoot. 

One of the places we go to is right next to the Sheriffs house.   [laugh]

Find non-city friends and ask questions.

Isn't the city of Oakland a private shooting range?

Can normal californians still pick up an AR-15??  I thought you had to be an owner prior to a particular date and perform a special assault weapon registration within a prior window.

It has to meet CA requirements. As for an AR or AK with a pistol grip, the magazine release is slightly different requiring a tool to remove the magazine.

so there was a loophole in the law that allowed removable magazines IF the magazine requires a tool to remove.

so enterprising AR makers came up with the California Button.  It's a mag release button that requires a 1/8" dowel inserted to push the button.

some makers modify magazines to have a small dowel (1/4" long) sticking from the side or bottom of the magazines so you can pop out the mag with the next one.

I have a couple of those mags, but they're still cumbersome to use.  I was thinking about affixing the dowel to the end of a middle finger glove for faster reloads, but that might be skirting the law a bit too much. 

Nope, you would be fine.  You can ~anything~ even another 5.56 round projectile for it.  Anything is fine.

Thanks for the offer but I wouldn't have anywhere to store it when not shooting.  I don't think the Hampton Inn is especially secure.   :)

Handguns and assault weapons are highly regulated in California.  A little paperback entitled How To Own a Gun and Stay Out of Jail, California edition 2011, outlines a lot of the laws.  I read it recently, but I focused mainly on the handgun parts.  Lots of necessary information in there.  I break a zillion laws on the bike, but I don't want to mess up with firearms.  Consequences are too severe.  Not implying anyone does not know all they need to - just passing on a good resource.  If I could easily own an AR15 I'd be all over it.   [thumbsup]

yeah, that's the compromise unless you want an AR with no pistol grip and a traditional rifle butt.  the tool can be anything as you point out.  10 rounds.  no BetaC drums.

Which is why I want to affix the tool to the end of the trigger finger on a pair of shooting gloves for faster mag changes. 

just grow a long pinky nail and trim it to fit the hole.

I thought the tool couldn't be attached to the gun or the person (like at the end of a glove).  But that is just what I heard from people from the range, so take it for what it's worth.

Down here it's called the desert.

No real issues except for the border patrol telling you that the ILLEGAL immigrants use that canyon to cross so you might not want to shoot there.

I know some of the sportsman clubs will allow it, but not all of them. Call around and see what they allow and if they have any openings for membership.

The one I go to does action pistol competitions so they allow movement, just not sure if you can bring the AR down.
