Title: Drowned I Phones
Post by: FIFO on October 30, 2011, 12:06:42 AM

Has any one Drowned their i phone or got it wet to the extent is dose not work properly or work at all?  [laugh]
And been able to repair it or get it fixed, and or recommended any repairers  :-*

I am am asking on the behalf of two some what reluctant acquaintances of mine,
Who went out for a ride today and ignored the weather forcast.,and all warnings from my self of the impending weather.

But they thought ,they knew better and went of ill prepaired, even neglecting to do something as simple as putting an $800 or so i phone in a plastic bag [laugh]

So if any one has some usefull help for these two usual suspects please pm Teff and Dez   [laugh] [laugh]

+1 ziplock bag full of rice, but maybe leave it for a week and somewhere warmish (sunny window etc).. I have recovered loads of devices that have been punished by rain water using this method. The water gets sucked up by the rice.

I stuffed my old N95 like that.  I had it in my pocket while umpiring a footy game in the torrential rain.

I disassembled it and rinsed the pieces in distilled water, dried it as best I could with compressed air and then baked it in an oven at 60 degrees C for a few hours.

Even that didn't bring it completely back to life.  The backlight on the screen was gone.  I ended up getting a replacement screen from ebay for $30...

I suspect an iphone would be a real pita to repair because they're reasonably well sealed up.

In my experience you can't force it (like so many things in life :D). Leave it in a bag of rice to suck up the moisture somewhere warm, but not in direct sunlight and you have a chance. If you really think it's dead, I'll  buy it off you cheap then sell it on Ebay when patience solves the problem. p.s. I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY WENT OUT OF YOUR WAY TO READ TEX THIS SMALL, but hugs anyway

My electricamonical goods, wallet etc live in a waterproof bumbag when I ride. Primarily cause there isn't enough room in my jacket pockets and Monster storage is suboptimal

Have heard that i phones record information like being dropped or water ingress ,heat exposure etc
for warranty repair claims.
Fact or fiction???? ???

Good ideas with the rice, well at least you can eat he rice if all else fails [popcorn]

Moisture sensors where headphone jack goes and where dock connector is.
They turn pink to red depending how much moisture gets in.
Shine a torch down holes to see colour.
If it doesn't work after the rice treatment,
make a genius appointment here
http://www.apple.com/au/retail/geniusbar/ (http://www.apple.com/au/retail/geniusbar/)
Warranty out the window - they replace them for $249

Wobbart has yet again witten another widiculous child like post wegarding an enjoyable ride towards Wollombi.....Sure, I admit we had a fair ammount of precipitation which is unusual when Des and I go out. And , yes, we didn't quite make it to our destination.
Put it this way.......I got a txt from Wobbie awound 7, telling me that it was going to be a clear day.......we took this as gospel and headed out............  that miserable shit stitched us up and is now pissing himself laughing at our expense.........
Des's iphone is in a bag of rice (not on the stove i hope desmond).........as for mine........well.........If you ring me, please understand that I may need to txt rather than talk......

Oh and Teff if you take your phone out of the bag of rice you possibly could hear,  but it must be a pregnant dog txting while it's in a bag of rice [laugh]
Though you video appears to be working ok ;)

Right of reply

Well Woberto ........yes there was the odd drop of rain or three on our MAN ride today
but unlike yourself who opted for the flaccid Palm beach loop for a cup of tea and a sponge cake then quickly back home before "PRECIOUS " could get a whiff of moisture in the air.
We actually had a fun MAN ride............................I do remember a time when you would venture out for a masculine
moment with your brethren Monster riders ...............but if memory serves me it was before you picked up that trophy
for polishing to much.

Mine got drowned in three inches of water last summer while camping down the south coast. Put it on the dash of the car with the air con going and got it working for about six weeks, then it died, rip

"Wobbart"  , sais the cook........  "don't you dare venture down into the garage, I told you ya not allowed to go, the lawns need mowing and we are going to the nursery today "............" don't even consider it, or I will personally display your balls alongside that silly trophy"..........

Fiction - sort of.  There's white strips in the headphone jack and the dock-connector like someone else had mentioned that will indeed turn pink if they get wet, and that's the first thing that Apple checks if you come in with a phone/iPod issue.  There's no actual device or software running for recording drops or dings or anything else like that.

+1 for the Rice-in-a-Bag trick.  It has helped me several times and it _is_ an option.  If that doesn't work, or you'd like to try the route of just an outright replacement, go and make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store and they'll be able to help you out.

Water damage does indeed void the warranty, however it's still ultimately at the discretion of the Genius that helps you as to whether or not you're charged or it's free.  They have the authority to just make the decision on the spot. ( I've worked at an Apple Store for nearly two years, lol - this isn't all nonsense ;-)  )

If you make the appointment, and go in, and just be upfront with the situation, more often than not they'll sympathize and just swap it on the spot for free.  "I was riding my motorcycle the other day, and had gotten caught in the rain.  The phone was in my pocket but I'm afraid it just wasn't as watertight as I thought because my phone no longer works.  I was wondering what my options were as far as getting it getting fixed or would it need to be replaced?"  I can't promise anything, but I've seen people get they're 3 week old laptops getting swapped out for free because the cat knocked over the iced tea on the counter, lol - it's worth a shot.

Understanding that, "sure, water damage isn't covered, but it never hurts to ask" kind of a thing usually gets things swapped.  Tech/Customer support people like calm customers and are more willing to help out :)

I hope that's helped! And I hope your phone gets back in working order one way or another :P

In some ways Rob was correct.............I should of known better than go for a ride with Teff (God of rain n thunder)
without a plastic bag. [laugh]
Brian had a few wines under his belt last night Rob so please excuse his comments
but I have always wondered what that empty jar was for your mantle piece  ;D

Thanks for the advice CrashAstern , Ill try the honest approach , it worked last time when I dropped it.
I am due an upgrade in a few months so that is the other option to pressure Optus to renew early.

OMG!!!  Don't use Arborio!

You should know your iphone is made in China.  Using Arborio will only make it worse.  Better to use Jasmine.

hahaha, awesome thread... I'm going to be adding a ziplock bag to my essentials bag of puncture kit, chocolate and water for ride days.

I may also add rice, just to have something to cook up and eat if I get a puncture but it doesn't rain!

But seriously, I echo the others who just said take it back to Apple Genius Bar, they'll sell you a new refurbed one for $250, or maybe free depending on who you get.

i was advised by a retailer that optus will handset upgrade your contract from the 19th month

far better than waiting for 24 months

.....Driving home this afternoon i needed to take a call so i pulled over to connect my plug in earpiece but it wouldn't properly connect........problem solved........a grain of that bloody rice trapped itself inside the connection......oh dear........was just not my weekend........
