My '99 750 takes 102 links, but I have a vague recollection of the gearing changing from 15/41 to 15/39 sometime around then, so that might not be right for you. I usually just buy one with 110 or more links and cut it to size myself. Have you looked to see it it's in the owners manual? They're available as pdfs for the 2000+ models on the ducati.com website. big Title: Re: what length chain? Post by: ScottRNelson on June 23, 2008, 02:10:04 PM I've never seen a chain sold with less than 108 links, and that is more than enough for any of the Monsters. I don't even bother counting links when I install a new chain. I just thread it through, set the rear axle right in the middle of the adjustment range, then figure out which way to go from there to get the chain to come out right. Last time I put on a new chain, a few months ago, it came out exactly half a link off, so I slid the axle forward about 1/4", lined it up. then pushed the pin out to "cut" the chain to the right length. I think I ended up with 102 links, but I only know that because I later counted them to answer some question on an internet forum.
You really are better off cutting to the length that puts your rear axle where you want it rather than counting the links. More forward means easier wheelies and quicker turning. More to the rear means a more stable bike. I probably could have gotten away with 100 links or 104 and still made it work on my bike. |
