Title: Immobilizer strangeness
Post by: abby normal on November 08, 2011, 05:42:36 PM
The bike is a 2004 S4R.  Recently, at a gas stop, the bike
Illuminated the immobilizer light and wouldn't hit the starter.
After a few minutes, it started easily.  Does anyone know if
Errant radio of the right frequency can interfere?  It's making
Me a little edgy about getting too far from home.

I had some similar issues when I had water in my gauges.

agreed.

this is usually concurrent with other electronics weirdness. any bizarre turn signal stuff? oil stop light coming off and on? gauges bouncing all over the place?

if you have another black key, try that (to verify your chip didn't messed up). the other possibility is that your antenna got messed up not likely unless you've been messing with it)

same here, my duc didn't like water either.

the bike has never been wet.  never ridden in the rain or even sprayed with a hose.
i'll check the gauges for water, but i'm pretty convinced there won't be any.  i haven't
noticed any issues with other electronics.  turned the key, got the gauge sweep, then
the immobilizer light came on solid.  maybe 5 minutes later, everything fine.

thanks for the input.

While my immobilizer was dying a s-l-o-w death I had this many times.  If I was near fluorescent lights or some other source of interference I could roll it out into an open area and it would start right up.  Don't wast a bunch of time or energy messing with it.  Get the re-flash and be done with it.  It isn't worth getting stranded over.

Thanks.  Can you elaborate on 'reflash'?  The dealer will have a code update
For the bike?

Reflashing refers to re programming the ECU. You can tune air fuel etc to increase performance. At the same time deactivate the immobilizer.

So ... I can take the bike to my local dealer and ask them to
Disable the immobilizer?  That sounds like a plan.  Thanks
For the assistance.

The very same problem happened to me this w-end. When it started, went home and started to work on it.
Gauges, lights everyting was working fine, but it would not crank.. Battery is not old and kept in a tender when I am not riding it.
I decided to check the starter switch, and the (red) kill switch. Removed the complete assembly and bingo, the inside was dirty and with moisture. Cleaned with electronic pressure spray from Radio S. and carefully sanded the contacts, put back together and it all works fine now.
So what I would say is to clean the starter switch assembly first. It only takes 10 minutes or so.

it was on..! just give it a try it may solve your problem.. The thing is that DUCATI has always been known to have electrical gremlins, I hope your problem is as easy to fix as mine was.

It can happen that immobilizer plays havoc when interference with antenna`s is around. On trips a have my electronic code with me in order to override a faulty immobilizer. Below the procedure to override: (You need to have your code card off course.... :D)

Procedure to disable immobilizer engine block
through throttle twistgrip
1) Turn the key to ON and fully open throttle. Keep it
open. The EOBD warning light turns off after 8 seconds.
2) Release the throttle as soon as the EOBD warning
light turns off.
3) EOBD pilot light will flash. Count a number of flashes
corresponding to the first figure of the code, open full
throttle and keep the position for 2 seconds, then
release. In this way the input of one figure is
acknowledged, EOBD pilot light comes on and stays on
for 4 seconds. Carry out the same procedure for the
following figures of the code. Failure to do so will cause
the EOBD pilot light to flash 20 times, then it will stay on.
This means that the procedure has been aborted. It will
be necessary to turn the key to OFF and restart from
point (1).
4) Repeat operations described in point (3) up to the last
figure of the code.
5) Release the throttle twistgrip, if the code is correct,
the EOBD warning light shall flash signalling that engine
block has been disabled. The warning light turns off after
4 seconds.
If the code is NOT correct, the EOBD warning light stays
on and it is then possible to turn the key to OFF and
repeat the procedure, starting from point (1), as many
times as necessary (infinite).
Note
Should the throttle twistgrip be released before the
set time, the warning light turns on again. It is then
necessary to bring the key to OFF and restart the
procedure from point (1).
