I'd like to powdercoat the black wheels on my '08 S2r1000  to a color similar to my exhaust pipes.  Like on the M11000's.

What should I expect to pay?
They have to be stripped first - correct?
How do I know a good shop from a bad one?
Will they need to have a clear topcoat?
Anything I should be aware of before I do it?

depends on where you are located
yes, most industrial places will not strip, its the custom shops that will.
how do you know a good resturant from a bad one? ask around!
no, most powders do not need a clear coat.

ask what they include in the price. and make sure they are CLEAN, also dont forget about any rubber on it. thye need to be removed.

Make sure the shop doesn't plan on 'burning' the old paint off in a high temp oven before blasting.

Those temps can damage aluminum where the curing temps for powder are fine.

Check them out...They do all of the powder coating for our shop...the owner has 50+ bikes, many of which are rare Ducatis and others are full ground up restoration jobs and custom builds. They know bikes! Yes, you'll have some shipping, but I'd say worth the headache!

They also just got a new organic chemical stripper that I'm actually going to submerge my heads in to remove the notorious melted gray powder coat...

Check out American Powder Coating down by the Tacoma Dome: the one across the street from the elephant car wash (some call it the Pink Elephant). There is another one in the mallet valley ,but the name escapes me at the moment.

Geesh, I'd forgotten all about that place (huge sign and all!). I keep my bike down at Foss Marina so I'll have to check them out.

You're a stone's throw away from the Rock and the Swiss. I lived in Tacoma (Fircrest) for 17 years and I still remember good things about the town.

Pricing may depend on color choice. Some powders cost more depending on whether or not it's something they spray, or have to special order.
Yes they need to be stripped, shop should be able to handle that or sublet it out
Most powdercoating shops can handle wheels
No on clear coat, if you want a gloss finish make sure you specify that when you choose your color. If your wheels have pressed in  bearing remove them . Some sanding may be envolved when you get them  back as there might be some build up. Remove tires before hand
